@reflex@kbin.social avatar

That seems to be a question that pops up during the initial application process, e.g., on the form that you submit if applying online.

I can't recall ever being in a position to specify that after I've joined a company. HR and payroll systems have always been preconfigured for me without issue, for instance.

So, as long as you didn't misrepresent it on your initial application materials, probably should just clear it up, OP—to be consistent. Although you're probably gonna be okay anyway if you don't (assuming you're not benefiting from it somehow).

skeptec , to nostupidquestions in How did Lemmy.world become more popular than Lemmy.ml?

I already see a lot of slang bullying on these instances that claim to be inclusive. It's just like reddit forming the karen meme during thier anti bullying campaign.

DreamerOfImprobableDreams , (edited )

To be fair, "karen" actually started as slang in the US Black community, describing a white woman who deludes herself into thinking a normal Black person just existing in her vicinity is somehow a mortal threat to her and calls the cops on them.

But yeah, like pretty much every slang term invented by Black people to discuss racism that hits the mainstream, it got misused over and over until it lost all its original meaning. Nowadays, it basically means "a middle-aged woman does something I personally find annoying (including just existing in my vicinity)".

I was just thinking about this today! I thought it was high time I dug out the old ones. I have to buy an adapter for the AV but these games were some of my favorites. Double Dash is still the best Mario Kart.

Knoll0114 , to books in eReader recommendations?

I got a Boox Nova Air and it has some trade offs. None of the ereaders are open source/Stallman-esque ethics friendly really but I do like that with Android based readers like Onyx Boox you can read in whatever app you want (like I had some purchased on Kindle, Kobo or even the Libby library app or Scribd subscription service.) This works for me since I can have those multiple sources. However, I found the Kobo Libra H20 to be a more polished and enjoyable experience so if all you’re doing is putting files on and not worrying about having multiple source access then I’d recommend that form factor.

Skyelight , to books in What did everyone read in June?

Technically I finished the last few pages of this yesterday but whatever - Spell Bound by F.T. Lukens was an adorable rivals-to-lovers story with some excellent magical worldbuilding. It also has so much in common with The Owl House I refuse to believe the author isn’t a fan.

I also want to say, those Logitech speakers in the back are no joke! I have some, and they’re the best speakers I’ve ever had.

@cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Calckey should absolutely be pushed for potential replacement, since it mirrors more closely the experience that Twitter users are used to.

I don’t think we’ll see a major migration, though. I think Twitter falling will just result in more fragmentation. I don’t think we’ll ever have a case like before where there’s ONE major social media platform that everyone goes to (which is why ActivityPub is so important).

I have seen posts on Tumblr from people who went (back) there because of the Twitter situation, so there is an additional direction.

@MrJameGumb@kbin.social avatar

I don't think there's anything wrong with using a web browser. I think people like the app just because it makes it easier to manage when browsing on the phone.

Since I work from home on a company PC now trying to use my own PC for anything is depressing lol so now I browse pretty much exclusively from my Android phone

Hello!

My attempt at a stupid question is: Do you need an account on every instance that hosts a community that you want to interact with (e.g., upvote, post, reply)?

So I have seen the phrase “it does not matter on which Lemmy instance you register, and you only need to register on one". All Lemmy instances show identical posts and comments, and let you follow all users and communities.” in many guides. This makes me think I should be able to upvote and reply on any post or community as long as I have an account on a federated instance. However, atleast while using the Liftoff! App, if I try to upvote a comment from a post link via beehaw while logged into Lemmy.one or Lemmy.world for example I get an error “this post was linked via beehaw. You are not logged in there.”

This really seems to indicate that I need a beehaw account if I want to interact with posts there and contribute. This in turn makes it seem like I’ll need an individual account on every instance that has a community I want to be a part of. This would be very problematic especially because many communities have an application process which can filter you out simply if the instance gets overwhelmed.

I found it would constantly jump to the top when reading/scrolling as new content was added, so I found various apps to be a much better experience. I guess that’s what happens with such a jump in new lemmings coming online!

I understand the scrolling/jumping problem was supposed to be addressed in 0.18.1, which is great!

How does Lemmy or Mastadon compete with YouTube?

DmMacniel OP ,

PeerTube would be indirect competition with YouTube.

ItsaB3AR ,

That is fair, just odd to banish all mention of FOSS or federated services. If it is what they are doing, they don’t want people getting that kind of mindset I suppose.

DmMacniel OP ,

It simply struck me as odd today; dunno if they are constantly doing this.
