mvirts , to techsupport in USB boot Ubuntu issue

It may be an issue with the bios not setting up the USB drive like grub expects… Maybe try booting with uefi if you can?

I think those symptoms mean it’s loading the first stage of grub but them grub can’t find the rest of itself

I second AsudoxDev’s idea that it may be worth using a different flash tool or a different USB drive if you can’t get it working.

I don’t claim expertise, but after living in four different coastal areas of three different bodies of water, I’ve not heard one. It’s always just “6 hours to high tide” or something like that, they want to know time to high/low point so people can plan accordingly.

limitedduck , to selfhosted in Anyone with problems with duckdns DynDNS?

I used to rely heavily on duckdns and it was great for a time, but moved off them a couple of years ago because resolution became inconsistent. I’ve since rolled my own ddns using a script that utilizes Porkbun.com’s DNS record API.

BaalInvoker , to linux in Encrypt whole system?

Encrypting and decrypting are complex operations that requires a lot from the hardware. The resources needed to encrypt and decrypt is proportionally correlated with the amount of files you’re encrypting and decrypting.

That said, there are some alternatives

  1. Encrypt the whole filesystem
  2. Encrypt only your home folder
  3. Encrypt only the files you wanna

There is an app, Vaults, that allows you to create vaults to easily encrypt and decrypt folders. Take a look on this app

Detectors say that you are human, you use multiple languages, and you are a moderator, but it feels like a 101 AI response. It’s horrible that we’re living in an era where you need to be careful about this. You were probably trying to format it nice, but I’ve only read this phrasing from AI.

But thanks for the answer, the home folder would probably be best. I don’t want to think about it after setting it up. All my downloads and docs are there. I also feel like the whole filesystem would take forever for me to unlock/boot.

BaalInvoker ,

Are the detectors part for real or were you just kidding? 😲

You were probably trying to format it nice, but I’ve only read this phrasing from AI.

Yes, I was, because I like to put my text well formated… I feel pain when I have to read bad formated texts, so I try to be as clean as possible

But thanks for the answer, the home folder would probably be best. I don’t want to think about it after setting it up. All my downloads and docs are there. I also feel like the whole filesystem would take forever for me to unlock/boot.

For home folder I think there is a better alternative, like systemd-homed or something like that

UnRelatedBurner OP ,

Are the detectors part for real or were you just kidding? 😲

they got your back, why are you suprised?

Others also said systemd-homed. And it looks promising, I’ll try it, but honestly I have no idea how to test it? From another user? From a liveboot usb?

BaalInvoker , (edited )

Because I don’t even knew that this kind of tool exists. And it was precise AF. I just got surprised/scared haha

About systemd-homed, I guess that liveusb will not work… I suggest you to try in a VM and everything going ok, you may try on another user on your pc

UnRelatedBurner OP ,

Oh, I think I’ll wipe my laptop, and do it live. What I wanted to ask was how do I know if it’s working?

Shnog , to asklemmy in What should I do if I find a bag by the road that I'm concerned it's a dead body?

In my state you can shoot, butcher, and then dispose of all of the waste (bones, skin, etc) from a deer directly into the trash. My first thought would have been, assuming you feel bones inside, that it’s from hunting.

13esq ,

If you’re going to dump it at the side of the road, why bag it?

Shnog ,

Easier to handle and dump would be my guess.

Slack water.

Skua ,

That's when the tide isn't going in or out, which is more likely to be closer to the high and low tides

orcrist ,

I think that’s what they were asking for.

Skua ,

They've added to the post that slack tide is "something else entirely". If they mean the point when the height of the tide is halfway between low and high tides, which is how I understood it, that should be one of the fastest-moving moments. As opposed to slack tide, which is when it's not moving at all.

“Stand of the tide” is offered by Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slack_tide?wprov=sfti1#Misc…

deranger ,

stand of the tide’, which is when tide levels ‘stand’ at a maximum or minimum

Isn’t that when it’s just standing at high or low tide?

Some googling leads me to find it’s either “ebb tide” or “flood tide” depending on whether it’s halfway falling or halfway rising, respectively. I’m not sure if this is exactly half way though, some diagrams make it appear that any time in between in either one of these, not necessarily half way exactly.

Trabic OP ,

I think you’re right about slack and stand, and ebb and flood would work but it’s usually just a glimpse when I drive over a bridge that makes me think about it, so I don’t know which way it’s going.

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

We use them as just the tide flow here.

I wouldn’t be taken aback if someone said half tide, and is probably what I would use if I was asked on the spot

Trabic OP ,

Never liked the way half-tide sounded, I think I’m liking Mean-Tide, or Median-Tide if I’m feeling fancy.

propter_hog ,

Stand of the tide seems different than the midpoint. At the midpoint the tide is definitely changing in one direction or another.

Stand of the tide seems maximum or minimum.

Idk the answer to your question, but it seems like there should be one. Equitide or something.

I work warehousing; no IT background, I just like to tinker with whatever. Have since I started breathing.

I was a fairly casual pirate, grabbing movies/shows I couldn’t find elsewhere (or just couldn’t afford). Got into Plex/Emby for my first real exploration into self-hosting (if you don’t count SRCDS and/or Minecraft Server at like 13yo); and expanded my knowledge from there. Reverse Proxys, the ‘arrs’, DNS, Docker, VPNs, etc.

Now a days, I’ve got 20+ services that I mostly access via a VPN I host, and I’m always interested in messing with new things :)
