knowncarbage , to books in What other fantasy should I read if I’m obsessed with Lord of the Rings?

The first 3 books of A Song of Ice & Fire.

By the time he gets to book 4/5 it’s all starting to get a little out of hand for poor George.

AbulicRage , to books in What other fantasy should I read if I’m obsessed with Lord of the Rings?

Have you tried wheel of time?

minorsecond OP ,

That series has been on my radar, but I’ve been weary because I’ve heard that there’s a big lull in the middle 5 books or so.

Thrillhouse , to books in eReader recommendations?

If you want to break free of an ecosystem / format you can go to a brand like Boox or Pocketbook. I have a pocketbook and like it, but some people think they are klunky/laggy (I wanted a smaller, water resistant reader).

I moved away from Amazon because I didn’t like the idea that they could delete or change a book I had paid for and I hated the ads for books/store on my e-reader.

If you go this route you will likely need to get Calibre free software to load books on your reader, so it does depend on how technical you are prepared to be. Not a steep learning curve but there are some recommended plugins, especially if you want to move books that you have bought on the Kindle Ecosystem. You can also go deeper and do things like have the software auto-estimate page # and reading difficulty, as well as implement tagging/organization systems, change/optimize covers, etc.

I second Pocketbook.

TiresomeOuting OP ,

Cool, Pocketbook Touch Lux 5 looks pretty good, since it’s the smallest one. But water resistance is a good idea, that’s why my kobo stopped working actually. And I can’t see anything on that model about water resistance. Which did you get?

Thrillhouse ,

I got the Pocketbook Touch HD 3

Mirahaze is good. No idea if it could be federated though.

Toasteh , to gaming in Starfield - How long until some basic mods?

The mods will come very quickly. I’m sure there will even be a few on launch day. They took a long time to release the creation kit for skyrim which made making mods much more difficult, but the community still put out a lot just using modding tools from previous games.

JowlesMcGee , to retrogaming in Good PS1 games that weren't made in Japan?
@JowlesMcGee@kbin.social avatar

I've heard the PS1 port of Doom is good/interesting. If you haven't played it before (or even if you have) it might be worth checking out. It has different lighting and textures, from my understanding.

Xeelee , to nostupidquestions in How to create a decentralized kind of wiki?
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Reddit has wiki functionality which some subs used to pretty great effect. It shouldn't be too hard to create something similar in kbin/lemmy.

In the keyboard settings (aosp,gboard,etc) usually there’s an option for enabling/disabaling suggestions. That might solve the issue.

Kyoyeou OP ,

I sadly didn't find it, so instead I made my own macro's !

eric5949 , to gaming in Starfield - How long until some basic mods?

Given how previous Bethesda games have worked you’ll get basic mods like texture replacers and the like for the first few days/weeks until modders figure out some of the differences between FO4’s plugins and archives and Starfields then you’ll see some more substantial but still basic mods using tools like xEdit until Bethesda releases the creation kit a few months down the line and people can make larger more substantial mods like you see for Skyrim. One prominent modder plans on having dlss modded in I think by release since you’ll be able to get it early.

SuperSloth , to books in What book did you push through despite wanting to put it down/rage quit/bail on?
@SuperSloth@lemmy.world avatar

Fucking “IT” by Stephen King. That book started so good, but it’s about 400 pages longer than it needed to be and the child orgy at the end really didn’t help me cross the finish line. That book became a chore to get through.

where_am_i , to nostupidquestions in How are lemmy and other fediverse platforms profitable?

I'm now blocking everyone talking about reddit. enough is enough.

how informed do you have to be to ask this kind of question?

JesusTheCarpenter ,

Alright Mr Outraged, just because you got here a week before others doesn't mean the the new comers cannot ask about Lemmy and his it compares to Reddit. In fact the numbers are expected to rise. So good luck blocking posts and people on daily basis for weeks and months to come.

Aka, don't be a jerk to new comers that have questions. Jeez.

Reddit mentality crying about people talking about Reddit. This anger at people just using the internet was a huge problem there. You could have typed two sentences to help instead of typing two sentences to cry.

AND, this is literally No Stupid Questions. Feel free to let yourself out

Interesting that you chose to bring the exact kind of arrogant whiny bullshit over here from Reddit that we all hoped would be at a reduced pace for at least a little while. Chill and focus on positive interactions.

amzd , to nostupidquestions in Are there any Imagus sieves for the various Lemmy instances?

First comment. I have written this quick regex that seems to work on thumbnails on kbin.social:

img: ^kbin.social/media/cache/resolve/entry_thumb/(.+)$
to: media.kbin.social/$1

for import:

{"kbin.social":{"img":"^kbin\.social/media/cache/resolve/entry_thumb/(.+)$","to":"media.kbin.social/$1"}}

amzd ,

Ok an update already broke it; kbin added /media path to the media subdomain for some reason so update the to field with:

media.kbin.social/media/$1

nightscout , to fediverse in PSA: Mastodon is NOT Twitter and does not aim to be.
@nightscout@lemmy.world avatar

A lot of this has more to do with the mindset people approached Twitter with than the service itself. Honestly, I always approached Twitter the way you describe Mastodon here. I just wanted to find people who had interests similar to mine and connect with them, as well as find interesting news. Maybe that’s why moving from Twitter to Mastodon has been to seamless. Just a lot less anger and hate on Mastodon from what I’ve experienced. A much nicer atmosphere.

inverimus ,

It's how Twitter started. You followed people because they were your friends or had similar interests. It being a platform mainly for celebrities and influencers came later.

nightscout ,
@nightscout@lemmy.world avatar

Yes people forget that. They also forget how people said Twitter was too difficult or “techie” for the average user.

Usually_Lurker , to mildlyinfuriating in Probably a controversial topic, but A.I and how I feel corporate would abuse it
@Usually_Lurker@lemmy.world avatar

I think just clearly stating that this article or creation was derived from AI would be a good start. . It would allow the user/reader to make a better decision on the value of the information being presented.

JayEchoRay OP ,
@JayEchoRay@lemmy.world avatar

I think that would be a good step to provide a good middle ground yes. Allow it to exist and develop its own identity instead of it being meld together and replacing things outright.

So there can be an A.I. genre and provide transparency to help keep it from going too far
