OriginalThinker OP , to asklemmy in How come it didn't accept my previous post?

Hooray!! This one made it. Hooray for that.

The 2 things - my prior post that I put in a lot of effort, I wondered why it didn’t go through? (is it the image or the long text? - or a different reason?)

And the second thing, is that when looking at “app details”, that didn’t work. It doesn’t load (but other apps load just fine).

downpunxx , to asklemmy in is the lemmyverse dying already?
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

I don't use any Lemmy instance any more, seeing as how I couldn't make myself ok with having named that fediverse constellation after a man who owned the largest personal collection of Nazi memorabilia in the world.

I've been using KBIN, and even though it's founder and main coder put out an update last week as to why maintenance and development of KBIN has been slow to the point of seeming as if it's stopped all together, it still bothers me that I can't block a domain (without losing the ability to see posts comments .... it's a known bug) and I can't block sub/magazines/whatever from places like lemmyworld and hexbear (amongst others), can't drill down on my own comments under my profile to see replies, and notifications though racking up, and showing the increasing number, can't be accessed at all only showing the error we're working on it page (this has gone on for a month now).

So, yeah, it's becoming less interesting the longer these issues aren't addressed, and there are far too many children running around the fediverse (god help us when the idiot right wingers figure out how to onboard) without the ability to block at will.

Hey, it's all free, and the developers are all doing this gratis, out of the goodness of their hearts, and I appreciate that, I needed an excuse to shitcan reddit, as things are much much worse there, by design for engagement, just not in love with KBIN, and I guess that could change once it becomes more functional.

Lodespawn ,

I don't see any of the notification problems, I assume you've tried logging out and logging back in again? Closing any kbin tabs and restarting your browser? Checked if disabling your adblocker for the site makes a difference?

OpenStars ,
@OpenStars@kbin.social avatar

One good news about the Notifications issue is that it only affects the single "page" of the comment that caused it (I think when a mod on another instance removes a post thus different parts of Kbin "see" it - the notification counter - while other parts cannot see it hence it crashes itself). But when enough other notifications rack up that are not affected, it falls behind to page 2 and you can begin using notifications again.

Until it happens again with a new content and the cycle repeats. But my notifications are now permanently stuck at just 1 (or more but that 1 at least can never be removed) and I can use my notifications again... for now.

I don’t think it’s very empty at all. If I go to my “all” feed, the first page of posts were all posted within the last 10 minutes, and that’s despite having blocked the lemmit bot.

I’m not saying we need to blow up and get inundated with the masses, but sometimes it takes an event to kick things up a notch or two. Ideally a positive event, but something noteworthy to get people’s attention.

I don’t visit that site which shall not be named anymore, but I never visited it for memes or politics etc or because I had any particular affinity for the platform. I went there for the niche forums it had and if they exist here, they are empty.

It would probably have helped if all the news orgs shitting on reddit during the peak of the shitstorm had mentioned so much as a single alternative platform. But basically all of them were written as if reddit was all there was and the users were angry, but not even close to abandoning it.

Well, here’s to the future. May the fediverse get more coverage, because it sure doesn’t have an advertising budget. And that’s a good thing.

anguo , to linux in [SOLVED] How do I use my Logitech Mouse's DPI Shift feature with Piper/Libratbag?

I would have assumed that this happens purely at the mouse level, with no need for OS integration.

VinesNFluff OP , (edited )
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

It does not, because this button, like every OTHER button in the mouse, is configurable.

So if you don’t want to change DPI at all for your gaming/work flow – You can just give yourself extra buttons.

On Windows to get any functionality out of a Logitech Mouse’s extra buttons you gotta get Logi’s proprietary programme. On Linux, Piper/Ratbag does a great job, but I just couldn’t find this specific mapping (and additionally when I first plugged in the mouse, meaning it’d be on factory settings, the DPI shift button wasn’t doing anything) and that’s why I’m wondering if it’s unsupported.

themoonisacheese ,
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

It IS set at the mouse level, to change it you need to change in in the Logitech app which is windows only.

There is no mapping because the command to change DPI never leaves the mouse (as when using the DPI changing buttons by default ) but you may remap the button to MB8 or something if you want.

shrugal , to selfhosted in Should I go with a prebuilt or custom built NAS to get into self hosting?

If you enjoy researching, tinkering and customizing everything exactly how you envision it then build a custom one. If you “just” want to use the thing and run some docker containers then buy a NAS. From what you wrote I think a NAS is what you are looking for, especially the low maintenance part. Just make sure it’s not the most basic one, so it actually has the power to run what you need.

The one great thing about Synology NAS is that most things are right there in the UI or package center. You can just install them without researching 100 different alternatives, and configure them in the UI instead of config files. What’s not there can be installed just like on a custom server, because it is just a regular server after all. You also get good customer support if something doesn’t work, especially useful when you’re not as knowledgeable in everything yet.

pacology , to selfhosted in What's the best approach to deploy a static website to K8s cluster from a CI pipeline?
@pacology@lemmy.world avatar

My advice would be to have the server running on the cluster serving the static folder mounted through a network drive in the container. Then you just need to sync the content to the drive as the last step in your CI.

Alternatively, you will need to bake the static content in the container but then you will have to host it somewhere for the closer to get.

xinayder OP ,

How is this different than mounting the folder with the static website using hostPath?

pacology ,
@pacology@lemmy.world avatar

I imagine you are using k8s because you want to learn the platform.

In a real cluster with multiple machines, you don’t know which machine will run your container (that’s the point of clusters).

Do you need to host your files on a storage server and link these files to the containers through nfs.

See this post for an example on his to do it.

You can also argue a VPN might maker you more of a target, so if you don’t need it -don’t use one.
