HouseWolf , to linux in Is there a Windows 10 inspired launch menu?

If you don’t already know what desktop you’re going to use I’d suggest KDE Plasma. It’s pretty close to Windows out of the box, and as another comment pointed out there’s Tiled menu for it which is basically a clone of Win10s menu.

Getting people to pay for digital media in the era of mass piracy (Spotify, Deezer, Netflix)

Starting a taxi company by ignoring frauding all the regulation related to taxi operation, ( Uber)

Tons of pseudo science like energy therapy which are not much different from straight up witchcraft.

A thought also for real estate developer who buy land in high-flood-risk area, and still manage to sell the houses, these ones also should be in jail

9point6 ,

The first one is pretty much down to, as Gabe Newell puts it, “piracy is a service problem”. Spotify came along and (initially) provided a much better service compared to pirating your music at the time. Once they created the market segment, competitors started their own streaming subscriptions. I’d also say the Google music “upload 50,000 tracks for free” got a lot of former pirates to jump.

Now the services are going through the same enshittification that most popular online services seem to be going through, we can see piracy increasing again. Someone will notice and fill the gap in providing a good service again at some point and the pendulum will swing once more

TBF people also enjoyed parts of it that aren’t regulation related, such as upfront cost calculation. Scamming customers is harder and even in those events, it’s possible to get refunds.

Someone once made a mountain of cash selling pet rocks.

davidgro ,

I have an official USB pet rock I got from a thinkgeek back in the day. Has a little box with air holes and everything.

Exactly as functional as the original pet rock, but has a short USB cable attached.

You gain muscle in the gym.

The first of those is honestly harder, which is why I’m still overweight.

Fuck this company.

They've been awful for many, many years at this point. I've no idea why people keep giving them money and expecting them to not be awful.

intensely_human , to asklemmy in To people who choose not to swear (for non-religious reasons), what is your motivation to be that way ?

I was once being followed and harassed by a woman. I told her to “stay the fuck out of my life”.

Nothing came of it, but when I asked a lawyer about getting a restraining order against her, he told me that she actually had grounds to get an order against me, specifically because I had used the word “fuck” when I said that to her. That word, he said, could be considered evidence in a hearing that I was dangerous to her.

So basically, my primary reason to stop cursing is to avoid triggering special rules (not only legal, but corporate rules as well) that are activated by a person who says those key words.

menemen ,

Getting a restraining order against someone, because they said“stay the fuck out of my life” is so dumb. Sorry, I had to laugh. Hope you sorted that out and can live your life safely.

L3dpen , to memes in The state of the rail system the most reliable measure of how civilized a country really is

Through a postcolonialist lens this is pretty clever. Use of civilized as a term to excuse the racist and expansionist actions of one’s own country, expansion which happens to have coincided with railways being central to industrial power. Now the colonized are civilized, are we the barbarians?

Unironically thinking like that is the real ape-brained behavior.

I stopped using it last year it got so bad, I ended up using DDG but that’s gotten shit and I’ve found myself back on Google. To me it feels 10% better than it was when I stopped.

Although everyone’s experiences with Google are so different we’re probably all being A/B tested.
