  • “lesser evilism” and voting for the Democrats
  • thinking liberal bourgeois ‘democracy’ is a solution against fascism
    (as if fascism is a person and can be “voted out,” as if all of the things Democrats are supposed to “save us from” wrt Trump aren’t still happening with no resistance, as if the Democrats aren’t outflanking the Republicans on the right of issues like immigration, and as if they aren’t just as genocidal and barely even bothering to play empty-rhetoric games to pretend otherwise, and as if both parties aren’t part of, financed by, and working for the capitalist class and petty bourgeois who historically back fascism anyway, when economic crises create threats against their system and status for which fascism is the system’s immune response against the rise of socialism. “first they came for the communists…”)

Of the many ongoing derangment syndromes caused by mass media indoctrination, the Trump one is the most damaging. A huge number of people now openly support genocide.

The software company I work for is killing all legacy on-prem software in 2025 and replacing it with a modular AWS based system of single-page websites. Many customers are old-school and hesitant about anything cloud-related, but it worked out beautifully so far. The shutdown hasn’t happened yet tho, so we’ll see how many lawsuits roll in when it does lol

Hey, as the saying goes, nobody was ever fired for running up an astronomical AWS bill.

I’ve seen the exact opposite happen a couple of times: “How the fuck did you not realise you were spending 70 grand in a month?!”

Thats the thing about fairytales. They can be told whichever way the teller chooses. That makes them highly subjective and open to interpretation with your interpretation not matching mine and vice versa. It all boils down to belief and we all know how varied that is

anamethatisnt , to linux in Is there a Windows 10 inspired launch menu?

Uncertain if it has all the customization you want, but check out ArcMenu for GNOME
github.com/tau-OS/tau-arcmenu?tab=readme-ov-file
gitlab.com/arcmenu/ArcMenu

original_reader OP ,

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at it. It is basically a simplified Windows 7 menu. Decent, but it doesn’t go far enough for me.

Gnome itself is actually not bad. It has a full screen menu and arrangeable application icons and folders, but I cannot group them the way I want, let alone resize them. I wish there was something for Gnome, but I don’t see it.

Perhaps I am asking for an edge case. Even Microsoft has dumbed down its Start menu in 11 to essentially a mobile launcher. Too few people seem to want that.

HouseWolf ,

I used to use ArcMenu back when I ran Gnome on PopOS and I remember you could switch the layout between a lot of different menu styles.

Wasn’t just the Win7 style one.

makingStuffForFun ,
@makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s a good looking menu. Thank you

garrett ,

Yep, ArcMenu (@ gitlab.com/arcmenu/ArcMenu which is the maintained one, last updated days ago instead of years ago) has a ton of different layouts which can mimic any version of Windows, and so much more.

screenshot of ArcMenu layout settings, with the “modern” category expanded

When using GNOME, use the “Extensions Manager” app (from Flathub) to search for “ArcMenu” and install it, then you can configure it there in the Extensions Manager app as well. In the ArcMenu configuration, go to layouts and select the modern group to see something like the screenshot above. (The previews are generic wireframe sketches; the result will look much more high fidelity.)

I don’t think resizing is an option, but isn’t it possible to drag one app’s icon on top of another app’s icon to create a group?

tonyn ,

This is what I use, and I had totally forgotten that you could switch layouts. I switched from windows to Linux Mint Cinnamon about 12 years ago, and then to Ubuntu but I didn’t like the gnome menu. Having grown up with windows, that style of menu was what I was most comfortable with, and ArcMenu was there to fill the gap.

There’s Tiled menu for KDE Plasma

original_reader OP ,

Thank you. I might just have to switch to KDE for that. Will install KDE on my current GNOME environment. Will give it a test drive.

ian ,
@ian@feddit.uk avatar

In KDE Plasma, if you right click on the launch menu button, there is an option Show Alternatives. Here, you can immediately select and use one of the installed alternative start menus. On top of that, you can install further launcher menus, which will then appear in the Show Alternatives list. I installed Simple Menu (from Eike Hein) that has categories, favourites and search. And let’s you move the icons around. But its that easy to try out different launchers. I hope you find a good one.

alphacyberranger , to nostupidquestions in Is there a wig that doesn't heat your head?
@alphacyberranger@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m bald and have shaved my head clean and been like that for a while. After shaving for first time, the first issue was the sun heating up my head like an egg , so I started wearing normal caps. Then the second issue started, I sweat a lot , so the normal caps trap all that humidity and my head feels like a sauna and the cap starts smelling bad very fast.

So I switched to caps made of breathable fabric. It was a game changer for me, its the best of both worlds. Covers the head as well as allows moisture to be evaporated. You could give it a try.
