@data1701d@startrek.website avatar

I installed Pop in a VM (I use Debian usually) and was surprised how usable it was sans-graphical acceleration. Ubuntu is pretty much unusable these days in a VM - it can literally sometimes take 30 seconds for a button press to register where it works instantly in VM Pop or Fedora.

NutinButNet , to nostupidquestions in American tourists visiting the EU, what do you think of it?

Went to Iceland a few years ago and the biggest thing I noticed was how clean everything was. In the US, at least where I am, trash is literally part of the street. Little black “gum” streaks, random paper flying about…

I don’t remember ever seeing any litter of any kind anywhere we went on the island.

I do remember seeing a random piece of raw meat on a meadow but that was it and I’m not sure I’d call that litter.

mean_bean279 ,

If you’re from the west coast of the US that seems to be a more West Coast thing. I recently went to Chicago and was amazed at how clean it was. The Lyft driver told me it was the cleanest city in the country (and possibly the world since he grew up outside of the states) but I wasn’t prepared for it. I walked everywhere in the city and there just wasn’t a single piece of trash anywhere. We actively looked too.

yyyesss , to nostupidquestions in American tourists visiting the EU, what do you think of it?

Poorer? No. Richer? Also no. Cheaper? Some things, like housing and wine. Other things, same or more expensive (such as electronics) Healthcare was at least as good but easier to get into.

I was constantly surprised just how normal/at home I felt. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

mesamunefire , to linux in What Linux distro surprised you the most?

Puppy linux seems like its still one of the more unique Linuxes around. Its my go-to when I need to do a recovery for family/friends and seems to almost work with any system. If it can, it will load its entire system into the RAM and go to town. If it cant. then it will act like a live disk…but you can “save” the OS multiple different places. Its a fun little OS.

For proof that this thread is just people justifying what they know as better somehow, look no further than Canada.

We do cooking temps in Fahrenheit, weather in Celsius. Human weights in pounds, but never pounds and oz. Food weights in grams, cooking weights in pounds and oz. Liquid volume in millilitres and litres, but cooking in cups, teaspoons and tablespoons. Speed & distance in kilometres, heights in feet and inches.

Try and give this any consistency and people will look at you like you’re fucked. The next town is 100km over, I’m 5ft 10in, a can of soda is 355ml, it’s 21c out and I have the oven roasting something at 400f. Tell me it’s 68f out and I will fight you.

People like what they are used to, and will bend over backwards to justify it. This becomes blatantly obvious when you use a random mix of units like we do, because you realize that all that matters is mental scale.

If Fahrenheit is “how people feel” then why are feet useful measurements of height when 90% of people are between 4ft and 6ft? They aren’t. You just know the scale in your head, so when someone says they’re 7ft tall you say “dang that’s tall”. That’s it.

IntheTreetop ,

This makes a lot of sense, and why I’d never survive in Canada.

Bongles ,

If Fahrenheit is “how people feel” then why are feet useful measurements of height when 90% of people are between 4ft and 6ft?

Those are two different things. Hope this helps.

@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

It doesn’t help at all, it’s being intentionally obtuse. You know what I mean, it’s unhelpful to pretend otherwise and pick a fight over it.

Bongles , (edited )

If an argument is being made for one thing, Fahrenheit, it’s not relevant to bring up a different thing. Why is feet a useful measurement? Maybe it’s not, we’re talking about temperature.

Rivalarrival ,

We do cooking temps in Fahrenheit, weather in Celsius.

Fahrenheit: let’s use “really cold weather” as zero and really hot weather as 100.

Celsius: let’s use “freezing water” as zero, and “boiling water” as 100

Plot twist: I don’t use a shopping cart. (I always use the textile shopping bag that I bring from home.)

theparadox ,

That’s considered a security concern in most grocery stores where I live. There are signs telling you not to place any items in your shopping bags until you’ve paid for them. You must use a cart or waste several minutes hunting around the entrance or registers trying to find where they hid one of their 10 shopping baskets.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Wow, what kind of dystopia do you live in? In my town, they’re just happy you went to their store, and I presume cracking down on what little shoplifting there is would drive away more business than it saves.

What type of products? There is !buyitforlife, and if you are looking for consumer electronics there is !hardware

technomad OP ,

I’m just going to copy a comment, because it looks like the crosspost didn’t update the edit from the original post…

Copied comment:

buyitforlife is a fantastic community, but I’m not sure it fits what I’m talking about because it’s kind of specific to exclusive products that are meant to last. I’m imagining something that’s covers a more broad range of products. Stipulations might include things like:

-reviews

-design speculation

-improvements

-collaboration

-development

-creation

-also, no sponsored/commercialized products!

(development and creation are super ambitious, but I’d like to include them just because)

I’m very analytical about product design, especially when it comes to electronics and technology, and I like to imagine ways that things could work better or be designed better. I just think it would be cool to have a place to discuss things like that. I also feel like it can be difficult to trust reviews that come from one source, so having a federated collection to start building might be a really useful resource

hellfire103 , to mildlyinfuriating in Old vs new Freetube player ui

It might not actually be that bad, but I rarely like change. In my opinion, all software should have a sort of legacy UI mode.

I’ve lost trust in reviews in general but am interested in repairable products. For TVs/screens I like rtings. Youtube covers a lot of products.

What kind of stuff are you thinking about?

technomad OP ,

I’m thinking generally about electronics, because I like tech stuff, but I don’t see a reason to limit it to just that category. The idea of a federated review system is kind of what I’m getting at, with the posibility of encompassing things like design, collaboration, speculation for ways to improve, (repairability would be a great thing to cover as well, but I’m not extrememly savvy when it comes to repair!)

I think that a federated library of product reviews/discussions could be a great resource.

MaximilianKohler ,

I agree. The best option now is to look for specific sources of trustworthy reviews.

Regarding rtings, the two monitors I purchased myself had completely different results from the monitor RTINGS showed. What does that say? RTINGS is totally unreliable? I got ridiculously unlucky? hardforum.com/threads/…/post-1045814690

xmunk , to nostupidquestions in American tourists visiting the EU, what do you think of it?

Better - I don’t give a shit about richer/poorer because the quality of life is clearly higher and that’s the only reason to care about wealth.

Food prices are extremely reasonable and often below American prices.

European cities are also safer not because there isn’t crime but because the design creates a lot more continuous safe spaces where there are plenty of witnesses and other folks.

Lastly, European Healthcare is much better in terms of cost and quality but if you need something that you can’t get done or done in a timely fashion it’s harder to afford health care tourism.

lud ,

Afaik if you actually need something you will get it fairly quickly.

That’s why the healthcare system can be slow. We use triage heavily.

Perfect example of how many if not most right-wing voters don’t give a shit about policy. It’s an aesthetic more than anything else. Flags and guns and football and church and big ol’ southern nuclear families. Get them to associate literally anything with that vibe and you’ll have 30% of voters in this country behind it.

A professor I was taking a management class with gave me a fun burn on my thesis. I asked for his input on a specific point and he called it “intellectual masterbation” and proceeded to talk for 15 min or so about ideas he thought i should have studied instead (I was already preparing for my thesis defense so couldn’t change topics). Never got an answer on the actual question I’d raised.
