Blender.

The only reason I got into 3D is Blender. I wanted to make some models for my favorite game many years ago and the developer of that game used blender to make them. I follwed the famous Donut tutorial (the old 2.7 one) and it opened the eyes for me that blender was so much more than a modeling tool. I had used SFM before in small amounts to make tf2 wallpapers, so I guess I wasn’t completely new to CG, but Blender kinda shaped in which direction I steered my life.

missingno , to fediverse in How do we get "normies" to adopt the Fediverse?
@missingno@fedia.io avatar

In order to get more people on Fedi, we have to get more people on Fedi. People will go whereever everybody else already is. That's the only thing keeping Twitter alive, even though almost everyone there will openly admit they hate it, no one will actually leave Twitter because everyone else is still on Twitter.

It's a chicken-and-egg problem that I don't think Fedi can actively do anything to solve. Or rather, I think it's too late to solve. If there's any competitor that has a chance, BlueSky has established a much bigger userbase in far less time, and that's enough momentum to potentially get there. Anyone who's leaving Twitter will go to BlueSky before they ever look at Fedi.

lattrommi , to asklemmy in Does Wikipedia really need my donations?
@lattrommi@lemmy.ml avatar

I made an account and did a one time donation for $2.50. This removes the website donation banner. As long as I’m logged in, I do not see those messages. I get an email about donating once a year, possibly twice. Infrequently enough to be unsure of how often it has happened. If I ever see the donation banner on the website, I know I am logged out. So I can’t answer your query about the corporate aspect but I can say that the heartstring tugging can easily be solved with a one time donation for a small amount. You can do a custom amount for a donation so theoretically it could be for $0.01 or your lowest fiat equivalent.

The problem was with DS-Lite tunneling, as some users mentioned, and it only works over IPv6. However, now I have another issue. My entire family has access through their ISPs, but my cellular data ISP does not support IPv6. Is there any workaround that doesn’t require me to look for a new ISP or asking for IPv4 address? 😀 By the way, thanks to everyone for the help!

mholiv ,

i would just ask for an Ipv4 address. I asked Vodafone for one and they just gave it to me for free.

You_are_dust , to retrogaming in What should I do with a yellow NES?

I’d personally not worry about the yellowing. I’d say clean it up to remove actual dirt and scuffs and don’t worry about the discoloration. Yellowed electronics are peak retro. Hook it up to an old yellowed CRT monitor.

dch82 , to fediverse in Any arguments against separating identity from instance/platform? (single identity across the fediverse)

IMO, if you choose a common username (except for alt accounts) for all your platforms (in my case, dch82) it’s fairly easy to find all the accounts. If you want to, you can also link your other platforms in the bio.

matcha_addict OP ,

If you choose a username, and I sign up with your same username before you do, then now you’re screwed. So I agree this is a solution, but it is not without faults. No one prevents someone from signing up with your username (either maliciously or they just liked the same name)

MartianSands , (edited )

That’s going to be a problem whatever solution you come up with, because of the federated nature of the lemmy system.

There’s no central authority to hand out usernames, so if two people sign up to different instances with the same username, any design which didn’t attach instance name to each username would fail. The only way around it would be for each instance to contact every other instance which exists, including the ones which haven’t federated yet, and negotiate ownership of the new username, and that’s just not possible

matcha_addict OP ,

That’s fine. I may be [email protected] someone else might be [email protected], but I am the only [email protected] and anytime someone sees that full ID, they know for a fact it’s me. But if they see [email protected], they cannot know for sure.

You can also setup a little linktree page and just have all your profiles link to that so you don’t have to update 10000 links on every profile.

Super Mario Bros 3?

Really the only right answer at this point. Plenty of amazing games on NES, but Mario 3 is probably the most widely accessible with tons of play time

AFAIK you can already sign into pixelfed with your mastodon account. It is a good idea, I think the only problem would be you would be completely reliant on Instance and if that goes down everything is gone

matcha_addict OP ,

I agree, but reliance on an instance is already a big issue.

Theoretically, if this gets implemented, it could be possible to federate the ability to sign up elsewhere, or at least make your user downloadable and sign up with it elsewhere

L0rdMathias , to fediverse in How do we get "normies" to adopt the Fediverse?

You don’t. If they don’t wanna be here, don’t take on this huge crusade to get them here. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. They must take the final step themselves.

Focus on making lemme a desirable place to be, less on getting people to use the communication tool you happen to prefer.
