Fondots , to asklemmy in What duration of time do you connect to intellectual property?

I feel like there needs to be at least 2 separate sets of rules for copyright.

For independent artists, I think it’s pretty reasonable that copyright should last for their lifetime and maybe a little longer to make sure that their spouse, children, or other dependants can be cared for before the work goes public domain. We can quibble over exactly how long after death that should be, but that seems pretty fair to me (personally I’m tempted to say 18 years+9 months, so if hypothetically a male artist knocked up his wife immediately before kicking the bucket, that kid would still be able to receive something from their father’s works until they reached adulthood.) And if they don’t have any apparent next of kin, it just expires at death.

But when it’s not an independent artist, and it’s something like Disney, where that legal entity that owns the property could very well be around forever, I think it’s more appropriate to put a hard limit on it, maybe 50 years as long as they’re actively using the property- marketing it, selling merchandise, licensing it out, making it available on streaming, etc. and maybe 15 years if they aren’t doing anything with it (Again, we can quibble over the exact length of time, I picked 50 it’s a nice round number, and 15 because that’s how long a design patent lasts and it felt appropriate)

There’s of course going to be some interplay between those two categories, an independent artist who’s contracted to make something for Disney may retain some rights to that work, so what happens after 15 years? What if that artist is contracted to make something using IP that’s about to expire even sooner? What if an independent artist creates something insanely popular and builds a disney-like megacorporation around it with hundreds of other people all creating derivative works from that original thing, does the copyright stay with that original artist to expire when they die or does it become one of those corporate copyrights that expires in 50 years? And if the latter, does that happen automatically when the company hinsts a certain size or how would that happen?

I definitely don’t have all the answers to all those questions, but as a general framework that feels fair to me.

BarHocker ,

Why should the kid get anything from the patents achievements by law?

Nemo ,

Because it is the duty of parents to support their children, and this is desirable for the purposes of a stable society, and the purpise of law is to protect the stability of society?

Fondots , (edited )

An independent artist probably isn’t going to have an employer-sponsored retirement account like a 401k or a pension, etc. like many of us with “normal” jobs have, and are counting on to help our spouses, children, or other dependants should we die before them. Allowing them to retain the rights to an artists work for after death seems to me like it would help fill that same kind of role and also provides them a little protection, since not all artists are wildly successful and may not have been able to save much or anything for retirement/funeral expenses, etc. on their own. I don’t think it needs to last their whole life, their kid could potentially live 100 years which seems excessive and against the spirit of allowing things to go into the public domain, but I think seeing them into adulthood is fair.

Edit: I’m personally contributing to a pension at my job, my wife has never worked there but she still gets to collect that pension after I die, that’s a big part of our collective retirement plans. If we had kids, I’d want to make sure those kids are being provided for out of that pension at least until they’re old enough to live on their own. I think artists would also like to have that kind of safety net for their loved ones after they die.

Because the parents owned it, and it can be passed down like any other property.

That’s the whole point of the discussion.

It’s true. I once gave a woman cheese, and we were fucking within 10 minutes.

We also planned to hookup that night already, but it had to be the cheese.

niktemadur ,

Was it some sort of blind hookup Tinder-like, and the “password” was a real, actual piece of cheese?
Like with spy craft, “I’ll be at the plaza at 10pm, sitting on the bench in front of the fountain. I will be wearing a Gary Coleman “OBEY” t-shirt and carrying a dark green backpack. You will ask me for a piece of cheese”.

frezik ,

Nothing like that. I just offered to get some cheese for a pre-hookup snack.

Its easier to just sign up and find everyone immediately, than to go learn what are instances and which one should you choose to make an account on, and then go and learn how to find other people that are not on that instance, or how to check do they have a mastodon account at all, then go and learn how to XY.

The “go and learn” is something that people, most of them, just don’t want to do. If you need to learn how to use something, this is the first indicator of a bad user experience. It should be obviously easy for a new person to get around.

We own two Epson EcoTank printers and love them.

0x0 ,

I had an Epson Stylos Color 740 until i could no longer find cartridges for it. Built to last, but somehow all new printers’ cartridges are never backwards-compatible…

moody ,

The EcoTank models are built to be refilled from bottles. The ink is also much cheaper, and they can be used with dye sublimation ink if one wishes.

Their regular printers are shitty otherwise.

Just upgraded from an old epson printer to an ecotank. Shit just works. I never managet to get my old one recognized on linux; with the ecotank it’s just a package from the aur and everything works. And it works so well. I would definetly recommend an epson ecotank.

EDIT: I didnt yet test the scanner, as I use a separate brother one

Aelis , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

Each time I go back on windows I realize it’s worse than I remembered, even though I never liked it. One thing I quickly realized after getting constantly asked for help about issues on windows : people tend to be greatly biased about how reliable it is, mostly because it’s all they’ve known for a long time.

People often talk about compatibility regarding Linux, but are somehow oblivious to all the devices and hardware made for windows that somehow fails miserably to work when it has no good reason to…while Linux, despite most hardware and software not being made with it in mind, can sometimes somehow work wonders.

Windows only «just works» because it’s made by a monopolistic monster of a company, with a ton of software and tools and stuff made for it because of how widespread it is, and despite that their OS is just plain garbage…

  1. I use rhythmbox, but my usecase isn’t quite as extensive as yours. I don’t think it has smart playlist capabilities, for example. But it is able to rip MP3s from CDAs, which is cool.
  2. I haven’t found anything that will work 100% with iphones on Linux, but I no longer have iphones, so it’s been a while since I’ve looked.
  3. MS Office used to work fine enough under WINE. I’ve had 0 luck with 365. There’s LibreOffice, which is a great replacement for most things Office (minus Outlook). Thunderbird, I think, has an exchange plug-in. On my home computer, though, I use Outlook web, which has worked just as well as Desktop for my use cases so far. I understand you want Desktop Outlook, so this may be a deal breaker. However, Desktop Outlook New is heading towards WPA anyway, and MS is trying to sync the functionality between desktop and web, so this may only be an issue for a little while.
  4. I don’t have this use case for my computer, so I can’t really help here. But others on this thread seemed to have provided some nice options.
  5. not sure you’ll get integration into proprietary software like Evernote, but there are built-in scanning tools that “just work” with every scanner I’ve thrown at it thus far. I do not have the same scanner you do, though.

I recommend grabbing a live ISO of a distro you’re interested in trying (Mint seems to just work for most people, ElementaryOS if you want to maintain that macos look/feel), and just trying it out on RAM. No installation needed, and you can get a better feel if this will work for you. Don’t expect a perfect fit, though. Workflows and solutions will differ from Mac to Linux, just as they do from Mac to Windows. This was one of my reservations, and why I kept finding myself back on Windows and Mac. The end goal, IMO, should be to get out of the walled garden in which you’ve found yourself. Once I realized that, once I switched my goal from ‘finding exact replacements’ to ‘getting out’, switching was much easier and smoother. Good luck! Post any questions you have, and we’ll do our best to guide you right. This is a great and super helpful community (mostly lol).
