@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

For me it’s the Intellivision with its controllers that were attached with phone cords and those plastic inserts that would customise the controller for each game.

I think we only had one game, Triple Action (although only the tanks and biplanes were worth playing).

My parents’ house still has more vintage tech than most computer museums.

brickfrog , (edited ) to piracy in Does anyone consume scene music?

You’re just referring to scene releases for music right? It’s a bit confusing since you’re referring to bundles, scene releases can be on their own or in a bundle depending where you get them. Private torrent trackers with scene releases for music have that type of thing e.g. some scene trackers do a 0day bundle of music every 1-2 weeks, some scene trackers do individual torrents of those releases.

I don’t download much music so it’s not something I’m well versed in but know it exists. Seems sort of annoying downloading a whole bundle of random music releases when you only care about 1-2 of the releases in the bundle. Then again having individual torrents for each and every music release does tend to lead to lots of dead unseeded torrents later on.

Interestingly public torrent indexers tend to have other non-scene groups doing music releases. On the FLAC side of things I’ve seen EICHBAUM and PMEDIA show up a lot and I’m pretty sure those have nothing to do with scene.

-a matter of legal and economic interpretation

If there’s a possible interpretation that a company is a monopoly, they’re a monopoly.

NeatNit ,

I agree on the merits, but the contrarian in me has to point out that any company is a monopoly through some convoluted interpretation. For example: Logitech has a monopoly on mice and keyboards that work with their proprietary software.

one_knight_scripting , (edited ) to games in How to decide what kind of controller one should purchase?

For PC, I would personally suggest looking for a controller with two things. Number 1, Hall effect sensors. Eliminate stick drift entirely with that alone. Number 2, replaceable joysticks. If the sticks last a long time, then the controller is expected to last longer. I just think having a way to replace work rubber is a good thing. Personally, I have loved Gulikit. My controller also happens to work on switch as well. Here is a link of you are interested in checking it out. Note that that is the controller I have, but you should definitely look at the different models. My controller has lasted about 3 years now. I used to go through PS5 controllers in about 6 months.

How does Gulikit have a whole-ass website with zero links to actually buy their products?

one_knight_scripting , (edited )

That is a totally fair question and one that I simply overlooked. Technically you can buy Gulikit through Amazon. I personally appreciate that the cost of it doesn’t go up over like a regular controller. Scuf did me dirty, I had a scuf for all of two months before the lb button fell apart and they refused to repair it. That thing cost me $185. This controller cost me $70.90 and has lasted me about two years. Here is a link to the Gulikit store on Amazon. I do recommend making sure it is from that store. I don’t know anything about it, but there is a AKNES store which sells gulikt controllers. amazon.com/…/BCC8C06B-7BF5-4D6C-A9A0-6290B8091F02…

On an unrelated note, if you have joy cons with stick drift (who doesn’t have these) then Gulikit also sells just the stick modules so you can fix it for good.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Amazon still does that dumb shit where they allow them to sell a dozen different products on the same listing. And the names are all mislabeled so I don’t even know what product I’m looking at.

HOW DO YOU DO FELLOW STUDENTS

Sundial , to asklemmy in If the whole world went by, it takes a village to raise a child theorem and not the individual but the world as a whole. What would the world look like?

A whole lot more co-operation and less traumatized children.

Bob_Robertson_IX ,

Except, I don’t share the same values as my neighbors, and either I would be upsetting the neighbor by how I’m ‘parenting’ their kids, or they will be upsetting me with how they ‘parent’ mine.

Sundial ,

I was thinking more along the lines of what those children would grow up with. They would end up becoming adults who understood trust and cooperation at a whole other level.

kayazere ,

I think the point of co-operative/collaborative parenting would be for the group to agree on how to raise the children. You collectively raise the children, not each adult implementing their own rules/methods. When you have differing opinions, you would most likely compromise and come to a common ground. The whole point of working together is to operate as a group to reduce the workload and not work in isolation.

I encrypt my disk with LVM on my Debian laptop. You’ll need to reinstall your operating system, as you have to do special partitioning. If your device has a TPM, you can use Clevis to set it to auto-decrypt.

Arkhive , to asklemmy in What are some good games with really awesome stories?

I’ve been playing the System Shock remake, and it’s been a dream!! It could be a tad more hand holdy, particularly with actually presenting the story, but it’s very true to the style at the time, leaving you to just explore an “abandoned” space ship to figure out what happened. It feels very Bioshock, meets Metroid, meets Marathon, meets Alien Isolation.

Metro 2033, and I’m fairly confident the 2 sequels, has also been running very smoothly. I plan to do a full play through of all 3 games having played the first 2 zones of metro exodus years ago and falling in love with the world building. Something I realized I was missing in a lot of games was full voice acting. If there are captions/words/subtitles on the screen someone is saying them out loud. I guess in world words like posters and such no, obviously not, but even the “loading screen” are these lovely journal/map moments, reminiscent of travel transitions in old films. They come with a fully voice acted paragraph to make it not feel like a loading screen at all, but a transition in the “film” or chapters of the game. This makes sense being based on books. The story is just given to you so well, while also allowing enough freedom to make it feel like you are an active part.
