In my opinion these parties are often mentioning valid issues or things that could be improved in society, and people vote for that. The problem is these parties don’t really have solutions either, but that’s something that doesn’t show up until after the elections…

@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Maybe sending people like you back to level it out could work?

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Maemo and later Meego yes… I had a Nokia N900 and it was an awesome phone. Basically Debian in your pocket, easily accessible terminal with root etc.

He just did.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Ha, I did not! Been a long time since I saw that image lol, thanks.

It’s not open source but it is easily rooted and you can install custom add-ons or even replace the os.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Using Calibre you could probably glue that together. I wouldn’t want Android on an ereader personally.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

No it’s not running Android.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

There is NickelMenu and you can telnet into it. You can also install other OS like KOReader easily, it doesn’t have a locked bootloader or anything like that. So imho that’s pretty accessible and open.

@targetx@programming.dev avatar

I never said anything about Onyx, I don’t own one but have considered them. They look nice and open.

I do own a couple of Kobo devices though and just wanted to say it’s not running Android of any kind but it’s still relatively open. Especially compared to phones, tablets and Kindle. The firmware/OS point you’re trying to make is irrelevant there and I think you know it :)

We use a CI pipeline check which prevents merges to master if the code contains a TODO. A precommit hook only works if the developer has the hooks configured.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

That’s no longer a technical process issue but more of a teamcoach/HR kind of issue then. You should be able to assume good intentions from colleagues, imho.

I would recommend getting a Google Takeout export every year or so. Even before it falls off a cliff it’s a good idea to have your own backups. Accounts can get blocked, hacked, etc.

Do you often hear the ringing of switching power supplies and devices when you are in a quiet space?

I’m curious, how many people are aware of these sounds. I have designed, etched, and built my own switching power supplies along with winding my own transformers. I am aware of the source of the noise. So, does anyone else hear these high frequency sounds regularly?

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Oh no I was so looking forward to just a little bit of hearing loss to finally stop hearing all these noises around me :-(

Aren’t all Hue bulbs Zigbee? They have some WiFi or bluetooth models now I believe but afaik all of them support Zigbee with a bridge.

“The project is under very active development. Expect bugs and changes. Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!”

It’s definitely the way to go, and the maintenance is easy. You do need to replace the coil every now and then though FYI.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

If you want to simplify the maintenance burden of nagios-like setups, look into OMD by CheckMK.

While I still use and sort of like Signal, I feel that dropping SMS support was the wrong choice and I don’t like the direction they are going. They are also against federation which I also don’t like. I’ve stopped recommending Signal to people.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Those are definitely all valid points, though I feel a bit of UI work making it abundantly clear that it’s not encrypted in case of SMS and an option perhaps to fully disable SMS in settings if you really don’t want it would have helped further adoption. I feel like they are optimizing for a rather small subset of users and thereby hurting the rest.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

They won’t. Most people just don’t care at all unfortunately :(

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

You’d still be running Windows though so why bother

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Oh I definitely agree. But still; when I’m running Windows the filesystem is very low on my list of annoyances.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Having been there; see if you can get a diagnosis. The medication is way cheaper and allowed me to stop self medicating completely, which has all sorts of other benefits.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Might want to look into Linux :-)

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

As it’s kind of implied at this point I thought I’d leave it out for once ;-)

But yes I do use Arch, btw.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Literally in the article, but yes he tried a couple of times already.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

I believe that’s a kbin specific bug mixing up image thumbnails or something. Works fine for me from Lemmy.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

As long as you configure channels you are allowed to use in the US it shouldn’t be a problem. Otherwise you might have issues with some clients not being able to connect to your wifi.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

That’s ridiculously exaggerated and you know it.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

They specifically mention it’s on the protocol level which would imply it’s doing more than just blocking some ports. Not sure why you’d think China could pull that off but it would be infeasible for Russia?

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

I can hide nsfw posts with sync for lemmy.

Plan a day where some of the guys come in skirts. Bonus points if they are a bit too short. You’ll see how quick they change that dresscode. Employers are not allowed (at least where I live in EU) to have such dresscodes based on gender, that’s discrimination… we were planning to do it at the place where I work a couple years ago but when management heard about it they changed the policy.

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Perhap we should focus on cleaning up earth first :-)

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

You should be able to boot into runlevel 1 easily and upgrade the kernel using the steps someone else already mentioned. No reason to reinstall the entire system.

HDD not recognized

Hello, everyone. I have this problem where my external HDD doesn't get detected. On an old laptop with Windows 7, it gets detected, but it won't open. On Fedora, it doesn't even get detected on the whole system. In the KDE partition manager it does show up as "sdd", but it will not show up in Dolphin or in the terminal, when...

targetx ,
@targetx@programming.dev avatar

Not sure if you already sent the drive away but I would recommend checking the output of ‘dmesg’ (as root on most distributions) after you plug in the drive. It might give a clue as to whats wrong.

It could just be the enclosure or power supply of the enclosure. Can you hear/feel the harddisk starting up? You could try opening the enclosure and just directly install it into a PC if you feel comfortable working with hardware.
