Not croatian but they do have some stupid speed limits in a lot of places and they also like to drive fast so thats a deadly combination.

For such questions you need to use a LLM that can search the web and summarise the top results in good quality and shows what sources are used for which parts of the answer. Something like copilot in bing.

I mean... you could contribute and write the feature

matcha_addict OP ,

But if the feature already exists in another platform, I’d gladly use that instead.

Plus, lemmy developers said this would be a very difficult change to make and requires a lot of rewriting. I presume it is because activityPub was only added to lemmy much later on.

nutomic ,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

We created Lemmy from the very start with federation in mind. But it was always meant to be a Reddit alternative, which means community focused. I don’t see any reason to add user following when that’s already supported by a dozen other Fediverse platforms, and would only dilute our main focus. I believe in the Unix philosophy: do one thing and do it well.

matcha_addict OP ,

Hey nutomic! Thanks for adding the context. I hope my comments above didn’t mis-represent what you said, and I’d like to add that I respect your position to not add a lot more work on the plate if it doesn’t agree with your goals, especially when other platforms that do it exist (which is what I’m asking about in this post).

However I do respectfully disagree with the point on unix philosophy: unix philosophy also talks about interoperability, and you can see that with unix tools everywhere being very interoperable among each other. In my humble opinion, lemmy is not quite there yet with interop regarding other fediverse platforms, when that is a key benefit of the fediverse.

This isn’t meant as an attack. This is surely easier said than done, and your work on lemmy has been amazing and I applaud it. But I also cannot confidently say lemmy is following unix philosophy in an exact sense here, not until interop is fully functional.

Cheers and thanks again for the great work!

Work for… What exactly?

Server requirements vary, depending on what they are doing.

ETA: I run about a dozen servers at home. Of them, none are more than what you have there. And I run a lot of services on each. Its what they are doing that matters.

I can't say that the ability to follow individual people is really something I care about, but coming from Piefed, it does seem to work just fine. So does Peertube and any of the other ones I've bothered to try.

yes I think the bigger problem here is right wing propagandists masquerading as lefties.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

My honest interpretation is that there are actually very few right wing propagandists masquerading as lefties, but they are very effective at bringing hapless idiot lefties to their narrative.

harrys_balzac ,

Oh you mean ml?

InternetUser2012 ,

Careful with that troll word, there are mods that will ban you for saying it. They tell you to report trolls to them, so I did (a very obvious troll) and I got banned. Pretty neat you can’t appeal, and you can’t find out which mod did it either.

Luck perhaps? I don’t think I have seen any politics post that didn’t have at least one in the comments. It could also be that the majority of them are on instances not federated with the big boys. A lot of those I’ve blocked were on .ML or Hexbear. Among other undesirable things.

InternetUser2012 ,

I blocked hexbear a long time ago, it’s a right wing cesspool, I ditched .ml last week because of the trolls and tankies. It’s too bad mods don’t go after the obvious trolls/bots.

Great build for a gaming PC. For a server it looks odd. Usually when building a server, your main concern is reliability. Everything goes in pairs. Two CPUs, Two PSUs… It gets tedious fast. Often weaker but much more energy efficient parts are prefered, since unused CPU and RAM is considered wasted.

It would be much more helpful if you have a usecase you’re building it for (since now I really can’t comment too much on the build). If your primary concern is to try to have a home server, I’d say go for it. You can always upgrade/downgrade down the line.

chiisana ,
@chiisana@lemmy.chiisana.net avatar

There’s always the add more of everything so something could fail without impacting the stability aspect, and that’s great for a corporation needing the redundancy; but it’s probably prudent to not forget there’s also the “I’m interested in learning” aspect, where people running a home server to play with software side of things.

You’re spot on in that we’d need to know what it is that OP would like to do with the system, but I’m getting the feeling that stability isn’t that high of a concern just yet.
