Budget?

Mercury1337 OP ,
@Mercury1337@lemmy.world avatar

Up to 200 EUR - but not really the time to build something from scratch (like Raspi)

JASN_DE ,

Which display size? How much storage?

Mercury1337 OP ,
@Mercury1337@lemmy.world avatar

At least 10 inch / 64 GB (or extendable via SD card / USB stick)

cm0002 ,

Do you have time to build something partially from scratch? I could see repurposing an old laptop, disassemble it and make the screen face outwards with the board affixed to the back of the screen lid.

Might take some creative routing with the internal display cable, but I’ve taken apart tons of laptops where this would be doable, especially after you’ve discarded the plastic chassis

Though you’ll still need a frame of some kind, unless you like the “raw-tech” look

over_clox , to asklemmy in How to catch houseflies?

We got one of those electric fly swatters, but the thing is too heavy to swing fast enough to pop flies like you’d want. So on a hunch, I checked YouTube for a trick to make them more effective.

Basically take a styrofoam plate with a little food on it and tape it to the fly swatter, and zip tie the switch down and set it wherever the flies are at their worst. For bait, I just put a smear of ketchup and ranch dressing on a paper towel.

youtube.com/watch?v=tDZb2l2A888

We managed to kill over 30 flies in about 2 days. Heads up though, they’re not designed to be left continuously powered on, the batteries will end up dead and leaking after a couple days.

I had to toss the batteries and open up the swatter handle to clean out the battery juice off of the terminals so it won’t rot out.

But hey, aside from the inconvenience with the batteries, the trick just freaking works 👍

Death_Equity ,

It would be simple to make it corded with a wall adapter.

over_clox ,

I know right?!

But where do you find a 3 volt DC adapter these days?

Death_Equity ,

Well I have like 3 decades of wall adapters collected, so I would dig one out with the right specs lol. You can find the exact voltage and amperage one on Amazon or any number of electronics suppliers.

over_clox ,

I do have a spare box of old wall wart adapters put up in storage, I might have to check those someday.

Thankfully not yet though, those two days were enough to kill all the flies we had at the time. 👍

rozwud , to asklemmy in How do you organise your music playlists?

Somewhat haphazardly. I typically listen to multiple genres in one session as well. What I usually do is if I hear a song I like that’s not already in a playlist (or if I like it enough that I want it in multiple playlists), I’ll chuck it in at the end of one. Then when I have downtime I play around with the song order so that I like how each song transitions to the next. I enjoy doing that as a way to unwind. This method isn’t great if you’re the type that needs everything organized all the time though since my playlists are usually in some level of a work in progress state! The names are very boring - P01, P02, etc. I also have some playlists that are more themed, for instance a road trip playlist with more upbeat songs. I’ll usually play around with that one based on who is road tripping with me and what type of music I think they’ll enjoy.

addie , to casualuk in We have Greggs at home...
@addie@feddit.uk avatar

Do Iceland still do Official Greggs Products in their freezer section? Steak bakes made at home never tasted quite the same as they do off of the tray of random temperature in the shops, but sometimes that’s an itch that needs scratching.

Get a few bottles of suspiciously-cheap no-brand spirits, a few cartons of fruit drink and a couple of bottles of carbonated beverages, empty the whole lot into the ‘punch’ bucket while the 50-piece snack food selections heats through in the oven, including a few genuine Greggs items as centrepieces? Am telling you, Iceland has everything you need to kickstart a very reasonably-priced house party.

Swarfega ,

Been a while but I think so. The sausage rolls taste exactly the same. I guess because they are actually Greggs sausage rolls…

Schal330 ,

Can confirm Iceland still do the official sausage rolls. Had one for lunch. Still can’t get them to cook right in the air fryer, and feel like it’s a waste putting the oven on for a single sausage roll.

ronalicious , to coffee in A note of Moka Pot to Aeropress

did you rinse the filter first?

JoMiran OP ,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Of course. The key is the pressure, heat, and amount of time the water requires to pass through the brewing process. Without the filter it passes through faster and with less pressure. It’s the same concept behind an espresso machine and why top baristas will dump the coffee if it took too long to brew.

almar_quigley ,

But it also has more to do with your ratios. If the extraction is too bitter try changing a variable and see if you get a better result. More coffee, less water, etc. that’s also how baristas and the rest of us espresso makers dial in shots.

okay. so. like… given that “diamond” is a particularly defined cyrstalline form of carbon. Does neptune rain solid diamond? wouldn’t that be more like… ‘hail’?

also. it’s always fun to me reading some older scifi where they colonize venus because it looked like… how we look at mars today.

lugal ,

I read old scifi where Venus was full of rainforests. That’s not how we see Mars today

LordTrychon ,

There was a young adult sci fi series by Asimov called ‘Lucky Starr’ and I remember Venus was Oceanic in that one. Old old series.

lugal ,

All we could see were clouds implying rain (forests), or even more (and only) water.

LordTrychon ,

Yep. I found it fascinating. I think the version I had probably had a forward from Asimov talking about how we were wrong about guesses about Venus.

I don’t remember much else from the story except this, and the big reveal of the whodunnit. (Or more accurately the how).

mannycalavera , to asklemmy in How to catch houseflies?
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

Get a used spray bottle, one that you can adjust the spray to be narrow or wide angled by screwing unscrewing the cap. Set it to wide angled. Fill the bottle with some water and cleaning solution. Something you wouldn’t mind being sprayed about. Surface cleaner is a good bet because you probably already have that around the house to clean with.

Creep up on a fly with this diluted concoction and let rip. It might try and fly away but the wide angled spray plus the slight stickiness of the solution will hamper it’s efforts. Watch as it falls to the floor and writhes about in agony as it desperately tries to breathe (flies breathe through their skin which is now clogged with cleaning solution). It’s wings will be useless now too as they’ll be weighed down by the solution.

Finally with some tissues mop up and squash the little shit. For the first several flies leave them where you let them die as a warning to other flies in the area. After a couple of days you can clean up the bodies.

You’re welcome 🤗.

otherbarry ,

Agreed, though I’ve found that usually dousing a fly in water (via spray bottle) is enough to surprise them & get them to drop. Once they’ve fallen it takes them a bit to dry themselves & get airborne again, that’s usually enough time to swat it and finish the job.

That works well if you just have one or a few flies - if you’ve got a ton of them fly paper is going to work much better.

mannycalavera ,
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

Oh yeah fair point. Depends how sadistic you want to get mwahahaha! 😈

But also after swatting the fly it’s nice to give the area a quick clean anyway.
