What is your culture's outlook towards authority figures? What seems to have influenced it?

I am an Indian and I have become hyperaware of the people and the culture that surrounds me and I am beginning to see the flaws in it. One of the flaws that trouble me the MOST is how most Indians behave when they encounter any authority figure (mostly higher class or “higher” caste or the wealthy or the bureaucrat class)....

I’m from the Netherlands so I can give you my perspective of what it’s like here. Cultures are complex and nuanced so I hope I’m able to explain it, and of course it is only my own view.

People here openly flaunt authority. But it isn’t really something you do, it’s something you are. It’s just natural and even expected of you. People also don’t tend to mince words and will often tell you what they think. It’s not rude, it’s a sign of respect to be forward.

Since I work internationally that can sometimes lead to interesting situations. In their culture it might be final when a boss says what should be done. For me it is completely natural to say it makes no sense and we should continue the meeting or reconvene later.

Politeness is not really much of a concept here. If you are being polite you’ll run into misunderstandings with people. They’ll full on simply not understand what you are talking about if you’re being indirect.

We have formal and casual pronouns. If you use the formal ones, almost everyone will stop you. It will make them uncomfortable. Even if the relation is professional.

Talking to say a dentist or cop feels like talking to family you don’t know so well. I once called the cops and she calmed me in a motherly way and then shared her business ideas for my business and told me she’d come visit with her entire family that weekend.

Bosses are an interesting topic. Everyone will pretend like everyone is equal, but of course the boss still secretly has control, and politics are a thing.

I’m not into Dutch politics but I know the prime minister rides a bicycle to work and I don’t think he has a security detail.

Anyway, that’s the general feeling I get, but of course people come in all shapes and sizes just like anywhere else.

Also I wanted to say that afaik the Indian classes were supercharged by the British. Perhaps because of their own class structure or perhaps to divide and conquer. That might be something interesting to look into.

I’ve seen one of those fake bottles. It seemed too cheap to me so I looked up the ingredient dosage and it was near nothing. Real cbd oil is quite expensive.

Personally I can recommend cbd pills. It’s easy and you can dose it very precisely to your liking. In the nl you can get them over the counter, as is the case in many other places I imagine.

Perhaps you can help me with a question? I don’t see any way to meet the daily recommend amount of vitamins. Iirc to get enough vitamin k I’d have to eat 200g of spinach every day or some such. Then we haven’t covered the other stuff yet.

So what am I not getting here?

Thanks for the tip I might definitely do that. That being said vitamin k and spinach are just examples, I can’t recall exactly what it was. But I do know I’ve looked it up many times over the years, and every time came to the conclusion that I should ignore whatever the values said, because it made no sense at all. Like who knows perhaps it was kale or sum.

It sounds like it. To me it’s really a wholesome combination of tech and nature. Like imagine growing up with all the benefits of tech but in a peaceful natural environment. That could be a farm but I don’t see that it has to be.

When I worked in retail I had to ask people to wear a mask. Not a problem at all. But there was this one lady who came behind the counter an coughed on me? Technically it was assault because I even got spit on me.

Like at what point does someone cross into being just plain evil.

Over here you’ll want to simply remove yourself and contact the authorities. If that’s not possible you’ll want to use proportionate force.

In this case I’d say that means I’d be allowed to carefully push her from behind the counter and then call the police.

There was another poll that showed that there were virtually no transmen here. Would be interesting if someone researched that.

I think the trans community tends towards privacy oriented tools due to the political climate.

Let me tell you one of the reasons that I’m here. When I was eight I got a pc on my birthday. My sister was on that thing for two weeks using dos and acing grand prix motor. She was given a baby doll which could cry and eat and pee. That goes to show how deeply ingrained these norms are in our culture. How would my sister ever have a chance without a pc? She received the message and didn’t touch it again.

Another thing I can bring to the table is that I had game history and we learned that marketing of games used to be to boys and girls. And in the 80s or so it was figured out that marketing only to one gender group is more successful. That’s when games started focusing solely on boys.

Further, all the game authors were men, which further cements it.

For example I’ve been playing Oblivion lately and it’s almost impossible to find some proper pants. Any pants that I pick up magically transform into skirts and dresses: 1000011965

Sorry about that. Well it’s simpler than it seems. Find a note taking app you like or get a nice notebook. There’s some fancy ones if you wanna make it feel more valuable.

Then imagine being able to snap your fingers and change anything in order to be able to relax right now. Write down a list of these issues. For example:

  • I run out of money
  • I have to move for my work
  • …

Now write down a list of todos. If an issue is too big to be solved, you’ve got to break it down until it does allow you to do stuff easily.

Keep updating this from time to time.

You can also do free writing, and just write anything in any style.
