Depends on what you’re doing. There’s workarounds for parted that allow you to do things like grow the size of a partition, but by default, you cannot shrink a partition via command line because the design philosophy of parted is that it should by default try to not delete any data. So growing via command line seems fine, but otherwise not so much.

Here on stackoverflow, there’s some directions on how to use the —pretend-input-tty flag to use parted in a script.

Unfortunately a sizable portion of programmers and engineers are like this. It’s probably because they can only think in black and white.

ByteOnBikes ,

A lot of these old-fashion types are oblivious to social justice and get upset at even the thought that Institutional racism even exists, because they can point to their one black friend in tech who owns a mansion.

I used to get into arguments why master and slave was a problematic word to engineers. That’s how ignorant they are.

Those folks are dying out, especially as more diversity exists. Which is humourous because these folks will also rage about that too.

PhlubbaDubba , to science_memes in hahaha shit

I actually had an offer from my advisor to study for a PhD under him by basically taking on a major coding project to develop a non toxic format of social media, or at least to get as close to that as possible. I also remember it involving some non crypto uses of blockchain software potentially but my prof was more interested in the complex web development aspects of it and actually got my web design professor in on pitching the potential for it to me.

We had me enroll in a master’s level web design class to trial run it, and it turned out I wasn’t the webcode wunderkind they thought I might be given my good web design work for my courses so far. I’m creative but not a savant basically. We all agreed that my PhD potential was best sought after more design experience got under my belt.

sbv ,

I thought the whole deal with PhDs was that they were supposed to be new research that pushes the field forward. What field were you studying? What was the academic contribution the prof was expecting?

PhlubbaDubba ,

Software Engineering, and it was more intended as a build project than as an academic venture. We would basically have been setting out to strip out all the addiction features Social Media is built with and see what can be built with what’s left and what new ideas can make it a good experience for the user without queuing them for ranked rage fest matches against whoever else is in the comment section they clicked on in the rage bait article.

MindTraveller ,

Idea: enable downvotes, but they don’t just lower the ranking of the comment you downvote, they lower the ranking of the top level post. And they have a much larger effect than upvotes on ranking.

Now if you get into a fight with someone in the comment section, nobody will see it because your downvotes on each other will push the whole post into obscurity. Only uncontroversial posts where everyone agrees succeed. Thus, people are incentivised to make posts that everyone can enjoy. If you post something racist and start a fight in the comments, your post gets no upvotes, and the fight is contained from spreading further.

Downside: this system doesn’t discriminate between content thats controversial because it sucks and content that’s controversial but good. For example, any kind of vegan content is going to be buried. You’ll get a much stronger hivemind effect on this social media.

deuleb_biezelbob ,
@deuleb_biezelbob@programming.dev avatar

You forgot the bots and potential abuse that comes with it. Bunch of bots getting into a fight to lower the ranking of the post.

MindTraveller ,

That’s the same as creating a botnet to downvote a post directly, except now you need to plug it into an LLM instead of just running a script. It’s way more work.

I’ve been curious about those for a while, what are they about, are they somehow better than the usual Docker/Podman conatiners?

nickb333 ,

They run a full distro rather than the minimalist that Docker containers use. You can also use them to run gui apps but that needs a bit more work to configure. I run Google Chrome sandboxed this way.

Qemu/KVM and Virt Manager. I have three VMs that I pass my GPU to: a Hackintosh, a Windows 10, and and Windows 7.

teawrecks ,

Do you have two GPUs or do you fully switch to the VM while passed through?

data1701d ,
@data1701d@startrek.website avatar

I have two GPUs - an RX 550 hooked to the monitors and 580 for VMs. Until recently, once the VM shut down, the 580 was able to return to Linux and be used again via PRIME - no reset bug. It randomly stopped working and I’ve tried to debug it to fix the problem to little avail.

teawrecks ,

I actually may have seen the same issue recently. Have you tried adding initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init to your kernel launch params?

data1701d ,
@data1701d@startrek.website avatar

I’ll have to try that. What I have tried so far is running a different kernel version and making sure my driver blacklists are correct (I found that the GPU shouldn’t ever connect to snd_hda_intel. It briefly eas again, but after fixing it, I still had the problem.).

teawrecks ,

For me, I have intel integrated + amd discrete. When I tried to set DRI_PRIME to 0 it complained that 0 was invalid, when I set it to 2 it said it had to be less than the number of GPUs detected (2). After digging in I noticed my cards in /dev/dri/by-path were card1 card2 rather than 0 and 1 like everyone online said they should be. Searching for that I found a few threads like this one that mentioned simpledrm was enabled by default in 6.4.8, which apparently broke some kind of enumeration with amd GPUs. I don’t really understand why, but setting that param made my cards number correctly, and prime selection works again.

data1701d ,
@data1701d@startrek.website avatar

Huh. My issue seems different, but I’ll still test that flag to see if it changes anything. My problem looks like the device doesn’t return to host after VM shutdown, possibly because of the reset bug (based on my observation of dmesg), which I hadn’t encountered after about a year of GPU passthrough VM usage.

teawrecks ,

Ahh, yeah if it’s specifically when coming back from a VM, that sounds different. Maybe the vfio_pci driver isn’t getting swapped back to the real one? I barely know how it works, I’m sure you’ve checked everything.

possiblylinux127 ,

I hope you air gap that Windows 7 VM

I never found a way to share a Public folder with VirtManager though, I need to move files between host and guest. How would you go about it?

wildbus8979 ,

Install the quemu guest agent in the VM. For Linux and Windows you’ll even be able to drag and drop.

data1701d ,
@data1701d@startrek.website avatar

I go to the host folder I want to transfer files from and run ‘’’python3 -m http.server’’’. Then (I can’t remove if I use ‘’’ip a’’’ to find the IP address of the host or if I used mDNS), I use the guest web browser to download files.

I lived in Spain for a while. I was in some random city in Andalucía, walking with some random person I met in the hostel. We’re walking to the beach, and we pass a group of students coming the other way. Kinda passively scanning the faces, I see this kid I went to high school with. We weren’t friends, but it was a small school, 100 kids or so to a class. We both just kinda laugh, shake our heads, point at each other, share a dap as we pass and both just kept walking. Neither of us said anything except maybe “what the fuck”

lol neither of us stopped, just passed each other in disbelief

Another time, I got in a hit and run accident. When the guy hit me from behind, I looked in the rear view and saw his weird headlights. We go to pull off the road and he booked it. I couldn’t catch him. Like six months down the road, on my way home from school, I look in my rear view and see those headlights on the same color truck. He’s driving like a dickhead through traffic, but I start obviously following him, he’s kinda trying to shake me. He pulls over into a parking lot, I come in behind him. He and his douchey friend get out, all douchey-like. Comes to my window, trying to intimidate me, his friend to the passenger window to intimidate my friend. Starts yelling, and I’m just like, “yeah, like six months ago you rear ended me and I got a description of your truck for the police report, but didn’t get the license plate number.” He was immediately shaken and started stumbling on his words, trying to say he just bought this car, blah blah. I’m like, “oh. They kept those Ron Jon stickers on the window when they sold it?” lol at that point they were already retreating. I yell, “you can expect a visit from the cops pretty soon!” And they got out of there. I didn’t really make a police report, but I hope I made the next few months of his life really anxious.

Another time a guy who tried to stab me like three nights before when I was living in Colombia came up and started talking to a group of me and my friends on the street.
