They’re not lost, most of them are archived via Flashpoint. The most notable ones have also been exported as regular videos on sites like Newgrounds. But yeah, I miss that Flash era where people made fun animations and games for whatever was on their mind.

captain_aggravated ,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

The thing I find that is lost is the blurring of the line between video game and animation. Homestar Runner cartoons were often interactive, they made several outright games but also the things that were closer to animations often had easter eggs in them, from (in Strong Bad’s words) dumb stuff that would pop up to entire extra scenes.

Early Youtube had a thriving animation community, but given the limitations of video-based content they really couldn’t do those interactive elements, then Flash died, and now that culture is basically gone.

Kelly , (edited ) to showerthoughts in There is a trove of flash animation that is completely lost to history

For creators that were still active some jumped ship to pre rendered videos, for example Salad Fingers lives on here:

youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9383CC2C6DBD902F

A major archival project for the whole flash era is Flashpoint Archive (formally known as BlueMaxima):

flashpointarchive.org/?lang=en-US

pivot_root ,

People jumped ship to prerendered videos even before the death or Flash, using Flash as the video player.

It’s been over a decade since I learned this, but if I recall correctly, SWF animations that were large enough had desync issues with the audio and frames. The solution was to export the animation as an actual video file and play that back.

If something is positively weird I typically just call it “interesting” though it won’t work in all instances.

southsamurai , to asklemmy in what are your favorite condiment creations?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

My meatloaf topping.

It’s just modified ketchup, but it works so well.

There’s no recipe, you just add a pinch or two of brown sugar to deepen the color, some worcestershire sauce to taste for the flavor bump, and then any spices desired. Spice wise, it’s usually a touch of garlic powder, onion powder, blackpepper, and that’s that. Sometimes, I’ll get frisky and see what works and what doesn’t, but truth is that most spices take over too much, so it’s just about the three core spices that do well at upping the taste of the meat.

Generally, it’ll thicken enough during cooking, but if I go heavy on the worcestershire, it can need a bit of time simmering to get to the right range. But since my household prefers it fairly lightly added, that isn’t done often.

The only other thing I’ve found that improves is mushroom powder, but that stuff tends to be hard to find locally, so it isn’t a regular thing. Tbh, none of it is regular, meatloaf can be expensive, and we tend towards a more veggie based diet overall, using meats I’m smaller amounts. It’s a special occasion meal.

Hjalamanger , to asklemmy in Do you know alternative scripts for your language? If so, can you talk about them?
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Does one two one representations of the Latin alfabet count? In such case I’d mention a cipher used in Sweden called “brädgårdschiffer”. Here is “hej på dig!” written using brädgårdschiffer with my very sloppy writing on my phone:

Hej på dig!

It’s decrypted by matching up the shape and amount of dots with the letters in the key below. You look at the edges around the letters and the dots above that square.

key for brädgårdschiffer. This image is broken (:

I do however think that this chiffer probably exists outside of Sweden under some other name and other letters included (note that W and Q aren’t included in the key. They aren’t really used for in Swedish, apart from loans from other languages)

velox_vulnus OP ,

You were talking about this, right?

Key

note that W and Q aren’t included in the key

I suppose that V and K can be used as substitutes for loan-words?

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Yeah, sure you can just substitute out the letters or write them out as is. And thanks for the image, i always get problems with images proxyed through ddg and then my instance

Moonguide ,

Hm, have studies been made on this cipher related to dyslexia? I’m not dyslexic but I’ve been reading into it lately (looking to get into UI/UX) and this seems like maybe it could be useful.

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

I don’t know, but I would’ve think so. Part of the reason is that almost no one actually learns to read this stuff fluently without using the key and going letter by letter. So getting any significant sample of people to test it on would probably be hard

I can’t read (or write) it without the key, however I’m quite fast if I get to do it. I have thought of trying to learn it completely, mainly to see how hard it would be and what I’d learn (apart from, you know, learning brädgårdschiffer) from learning a “new” alfabet. I’d be interested to see how I view it in comparison to regular Latin script. I speak somewhere between 2 and 4 languages depending on how you count and I’ve found every new one interesting and insightful to learn so it would be fun to see if learning to read a new script fluently would be anywhere near as insightful. Ultimately I’d like to learn Korean or Chinese but that be a major challenge and take a lot of time (also, I could probably not squeeze it in to my formal education with the path I’m going to take so I’d have to do it in my free time)

Diplomjodler3 , to science_memes in Can whales eat humans?

The orca would rip you to bits before eating you.

AngryCommieKender ,

Actually, the last documented orca attack in the wild was in the 1800s. The orca bit the human once and spit the guy out. Didn’t even sever the arm that got bitten. Orcas as a species will eat anything in the water, including the occasional polar bear, except us. Individual Orcas have very narrow diets depending on the pod. Their eating habits are fascinating if you look into them.

Now if the orca was put into a fishbowl, and forced to do tricks while in solitary confinement? Well PTSD is a motherfucker.

Is the tech no longer possible? I have a feeling of no current browser support and security issues, but could one just have a private server for hobbyists?

W_itjust_works ,
pivot_root ,

Ruffle is a Rust-based implementation of a SWF player. It’s not 100% compatible, but it has decent AVM1 (ActionScript 1/2) and AVM2 (ActionScript 3) support already.

It also can be compiled to WebAssembly, making it possible to run Flash in the browser again.

Still playing Alan Wake 2 and it stays an amazing game. I’d think I’m close on ending the game though. Spoiler tagging just in case

Tap for spoilerI already nearly finished Saga’s storyline, all I have to do is the ending story for her. However currently busy with Alan’s story side before finishing Saga’s.

I abandoned Hogwarts Legacy because after 4 hours, I found it immensely dull. The story is boring, the gameplay is boring and didn’t find the exploration satisfying.
