southsamurai , to asklemmy in what's your favorite thing to put ketchup on that isn't fries?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hmmm, I assume the usual hamburger/hotdog isn’t what you’re looking for.

I think the least common thing I put ketchup on is kraft mac n cheese. Don’t do it every time, but every now and then, when I’m having the standard, package only mac n cheese, I’ll put a dab on there.

Can’t use much, or it sucks. But the kind of amount you might drop as you’re taking a bite of something else, that works great. That’s how I found out I liked it, back as a kid.

I will put ketchup on mac & cheese, of any kind, no matter how old your grandmother’s recipe is. did it right in front of my Italian potential mother-in-law too, there are certain things that have to be established early in the relationship.

Albbi ,

I’ve upgraded from ketchup on my mac and cheese (we call it Kraft Dinner here in Canada) to using Bullseye barbeque sauce. Adds a little bit more flavour.

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve done it with bbq sauce before, and I ain’t mad at it, but it doesn’t work the same way for me.

lukecooperatus , to asklemmy in what's your favorite thing to put on fries that isn't ketchup?
@lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml avatar

I haven’t seen anyone mention nutritional yeast yet, but that’s become my go-to seasoning for almost everything; popcorn, pizza, scrambled eggs, bread, ramen, soft pretzels, and of course on fries. So damn good!

(Yes, I realize the name “nutritional yeast” sounds vaguely unpleasant and unappetizing, but I promise it’s incredible if you like savory flavors, and it can also be used as a cheese powder substitute in vegan recipes.)

tilefan OP ,

I find it to be an okay parmesan replacement, but prefer parmesan

meekah ,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah nothing ever came close to Parmesan for me. I’ll use yeast when its the only option at my vegan friends places but I’ll never be able to be truly vegetarian because of Parmesan

RBWells ,

I put this only on popcorn but always on popcorn. Oh and sometimes in grits. So good in cheese grits, with cheddar, jalapenos and butter and salt. Way better than with just the cheese. So I guess only on corn.

Probably just their grooming every 2-3 months, which has gotten VERY expensive as inflation has made groomers’ lives hell and they’ve had to pass on those costs.

But, 100% worth it. My pups seem to know how good they look and love strutting around and getting attention from passersby on our walks.

I bought my cat an auto feeder and a filtered water fountain. Definitely quite pricey, but it’s amazing not getting woken up by meows to feed her each morning. Plus, it keeps her on a consistent schedule and seems like she drinks much more water with the filtered fountain too.

tilefan ,

what fountain did you get? the one I got, the filter doesn’t fit snugly so the water just goes around it

shreddy_scientist ,

I went with Petlibro for the feeder and fountain, they’ve worked well for me.

Mellow12 , (edited ) to selfhosted in I spent ~$35 on new cables and my LAN speed increased 6x

Ethernet speeds historically were measured in 10/100. In my past life I worked for an a small rural isp. And part of my learning I was taught that cat5 was 8 strands of wire, or 4 twisted pairs. I got very familiar with crimping patch cables. If one strand were cut a network card would negotiate down to its lowest speed and still work at 10mbps. Operating on 4 wire or two pairs. It’s possible with those numbers you had a bad connection, or a broken strand in the cable and it auto negotiated down to 10mbps. To this day I still crimp my own cables, and I own a cheap cable tester to make sure the crimps and cables are good.

I’ve a run of around 60 meters of old telephone cables (made out of copper, 4 wires) and I can get 100Mbps on those reliably. I used the old telephone infrastructure on the building to pass network from an apartment to the basement that way.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/d700abd9-33dc-4a32-a89b-de59cf1fd7af.png

Not to spec on ethernet on any way, not even twisted pairs but they do work. Unfortunately I can’t replace the run with a proper Cat6 cable because there’s a section that I can’t find where it goes to, it just disappears on a floor and appears 2 floors bellow it inside the main telephone distribution box.

On the distribution box (that is already on the basement of the building) I’m plugging into the LSA connector that goes to the apartment:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/df272f48-5b18-46c5-9886-9302de775fe7.png

The black box you see there is a mikrotik gper that is essentially a PoE switch with only 2 ethernet ports so I can get over the 100m limitation of ethernet. I’m running a cat6 cable from there on metal cable trays for about another 90 meters until it reaches a storage unit 2 floors bellow ground.

Here’s a ping test from a machine sitting on the storage box to the router on the apartment:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/acd976c7-0eda-49e6-a037-941b40ad6ffc.png

The router reports this as a 100M full-duplex connection:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7776b045-a028-44be-af7a-38b6e01fc318.jpeg

If anyone wants to try a setup like this, or just extend ethernet > 100m, it also worked fine with a cheap 5$ 100M switch from Aliexpress and a PoE injector + splitter.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c6622cf3-a0e1-4be0-96c4-9060f3b53b8f.png

However I eventually got the mikrotik gper for free so I decided to replace it because it should be more reliable.

quicken , to programmerhumor in Popular Programming Book "Clean Code" is being rewritten

I was a big Uncle Bob fan and still really like the Clean Code book. But he trashed his public reputation so I doubt this 2nd edition will do very well.

BleatingZombie ,

Is there a TL;DR if I don’t know who this is?

milkisklim ,

Here’s the Wikipedia page

Basically he is an old man/ software engineer who’s famous for his philosophy of coding.

Anders429 ,

Any context on him “trashing his reputation”?

Scrollone ,

He made some political remarks on Twitter that many people didn’t like.

guemax ,

I am also a big fan of his books, especially Clean Code. His (far-)right opinions are bad, but should be (to some extent) viewed separately from his technical standpoints. However, even then a new edition would not perform well, there are too many people hating Clean Code (without really understanding its message/just ranting without having read it). But I was very surprised that ThePrimeagen recently interviewed his “opponent”, it was very nice to watch.

Adderbox76 , to asklemmy in what's your favorite thing to put on fries that isn't ketchup?

Salt and Vinegar.

Never really liked ketchup.

tilefan OP ,
@tilefan@lemm.ee avatar

I mean you’re almost there, that’s 50% of the flavorings from ketchup. salt, vinegar, tomato, sugar. doesn’t even have to be tomato to be ketchup

Adderbox76 ,

True. But it’s the proportions of each that matter. And the type of salt and vineger.

  • Vinegar goes first because it gives the salt a sticking surface. Apply it when the fries are fresh so that it soaks in a bit better.
  • heavy on the salt before the vinegar has fully soaked in. Then toss the fries and add a little bit when serving.
  • Sea salt and Malt vinegar are the best, but any old salt and vinegar will do in a pinch.
