Nah. Went over to Liverpool and London, there’s good food. Just avoid low-end british cuisine, high end is fine, but expensive. Lebanese places in particular seemed to be all-around great, with good prices, tasty food, and friendly people.

Moonguide ,

Oh, music theory? How intro is it? I’ve wanted to learn some for some time, enough to maybe understand why my favourite songs work.

I took classes when I was a kid but wasn’t interested, several years later I was really into classical and jazz and I was able to play by ear but it literally takes me a minute to recognize notes on a sheet, nevermind recall notes. Some of the inside baseball stuff might as well be binary, too. Just incomprehensible.

Moonguide ,

One caveat to this: make sure it isn’t a game you know inside and out. You’ll go by memory instead of actively trying to interact with the language. At least that’s the way it goes for me.

Moonguide ,

Hm, Lenovo? Cus you just described my experience with them.

Moonguide ,

Family problems, health problems, carreer problems, and just GAD piling up on me. Someone took my pulse and it was running a sprint while I was sitting. Hands were absolutely numb and my fingers were twisting by themselves into weird poses, I couldn’t hear a thing and I couldn’t breathe.

That was the worst one I’ve ever had, and thankfully, the last one. Over a year ago. Every now and then I can feel one coming up but I’ve learned how to calm myself down in therapy.

Moonguide ,

Hard work does not always lead to success. Most of the time, it just leads to more work.

Moonguide ,

Goes further than that, imo. Toxic masculinity can also be subtle. It doesn’t need to be a chest-beating guy. Besides trying to hold a death-grip on your emotions, sinking yourself into whatever society holds to be manly, I can’t really think of an example rn, I’ve just woken up.

Moonguide ,

Those folks are really good, just wish their songs didn’t sound so samey.

Moonguide , (edited )

Just rock or is metal allowed? Cus if so:

  1. Ghost (Ghost B.C. in the UK) is very silly. Guys dressed in corpsepaint clergy, sounding like a hodgepodge of 70’s/80’s hits you missed. They got lore too, which is appropriately silly.
  2. Electric Callboy is silly. They are… Like, deathcore mixed with whatever they feel like for that song. We Got the Moves is deathcore with a bit of hard bass, for example. And it’s a song about partying. Pump It is about going to the gym. Spaceman is about a guy going to space and rapping in german. Honestly one of my favourite bands.
  3. Wind Rose is silly as hell. Bearded guys, singing about dwarf stuff. They covered Diggy Diggy Hole and blew up, and props to them because their version is a banger, but they got good original stuff too which is sadly overlooked because Diggy Diggy Hole was just that good.
  4. Powerwolf is another one, similar to Ghost. They’re vampiric werewolves? And their songs are all in-keeping with that theme. Power metal though, unlike Ghost.
  5. Austrian Death Machine is also silly. Voice actors emulating Arnold while the vocalist growls about lifting weights, the cookie monster, jingle bells, getting to the choppah, etc. The vocalist’s history has kind of soured the band for me though.
  6. Gnome is underrated. Their songs are simplistic as hell, and none of them are virtuosos. But their songs go hard. Wenceslas is great, Ambrosius as well. Edit: writing this gave me an earworm and went down Gnome’s songs. Their bassist is a goddamn genius. Simple licks that sound great, and they got weird time sig changes here and there that tickle my brain in the best ways. I can’t figure out if they are actual time sig changes or just weird changes, and I love that.

Squad, Rimworld, WH40K: Rogue Trader, Another Crab’s Treasure, and Valheim and Baldur’s Gate 3 with friends.

Moonguide ,

Guaras, or Guacamayas, I suppose. Think they’re called Macaws in english. They’re neat, pretty feathers and all. Shame they’re hardly ever visible outside of a zoo, unless you’re in the right spot at the right time and you’re really paying attention.

Moonguide ,

Couple weeks ago. I live in a very “traditional” part of the world and long hair isn’t common on men, especially well taken care of long hair. If I’m not wearing a cap, people often get confused before they see my beard. I don’t mind it, honestly.

Don’t remember the last time I misgendered someone, really.

Moonguide ,

Yeah, lot of em moved on to make Weird West, as Wolf-Eye Studios.

It’s a good game if an out-there im-sim is what you want.

Moonguide ,

Not mine but my grandma’s. We got her some plastic boxes with little containers inside of it, like a calendar but for medicine. Keeping it stocked up is a pretty good way of gauging what she’s running out of. Plus, she knows what to take at what time.

When I was taking meds I’d keep my medicine on my bed table stacked, and I’d keep two contact lens containers on me, one for my morning meds and another for my noon meds. I’d refill both at night. I can’t do bigger containers because it becomes too much of a hassle to refill them for myself.

Moonguide ,

Maybe it was the botched launch. Baldur’s Gate 3 was an early access title made by a known developer (at least in crpg spaces) of an existing IP, though BG 1 and 2 are old as hell and I imagine most of the player base didn’t play them, myself included.

I played KSP and was waiting for performance to get better before buying KSP 2. Oh well.

Moonguide ,

Third or fourth hand nokia, one of em indestructible ones. I was in school, so I didn’t have much use for one. Kept using nokia until I got a blackberry, and then a samsung. Moved over to iphone but didn’t like it much.

How tech savvy are we talking? I can troubleshoot the usual stuff on my pc, by googling. But I’m not a sysadmin and have 0 knowledge about how to set up or maintain a server.

My group has been looking at TTRPGs for a while now. We used Owlbear Rodeo for one campaign, and started our current one on Roll20 without premium, but… It’s so unintuitive. An honest to goodness UI/UX nightmare. I can see the logic behind some of the choices but it’s so uncomfortable to use. We want something with a bit more functionality (character sheets and dice rolling at least, dynamic fog of war being a personal bonus as a DM).

VHS player when I was a toddler. Was in the daycare and saw a cord, so naturally I pulled it. It was on top of the TV, which was bolted to the wall high up. Shattered on impact. Nearly fell on my head too.

Moonguide ,

I work in the industry, and yeah. Before, marketing was based on utility. “Buy this because it can do this and this and that”, basically marketing how effective or what it can actually do for you. Around the 50s (in the US) marketing changed to be based around lifestyle. “Buy this so you can be this”. Now nearly all ads appeal to emotion instead of reason, and it is very effective.

Researching about what a product offers is so much harder than just buying on a whim because the ads and the product are colorful.

You can see this change in old (really old) newspapers. Ad spreads were chock full of text about features. Now 3/4ths of the ads are an image of a happy woman if marketed for gals, or a stoic muscly man if marketed for guys.

Gives me the ick.

Moonguide ,

Man… I’m feeling better every day about leaving Reddit, and most other social media, for that matter. What the fuck is wrong with people.

Moonguide ,

One monitor for moodboard, another for materials, tablet monitor for working.

Moonguide ,

Baldur’s Gate 3, four playthroughs back to back, two of em multiplayer. I still play it every now and then when I want to continue my honor run.

Besides that, Rimworld. Nearly 4k hours.

Moonguide ,

Not yet! Waiting on a friend, we’re doing an all-barbarians playthrough, so we were thinking halflings. It’ll probably get very messy.

Moonguide ,

It’s honestly a neverending stream of new stories. There’s new, quality mods nearly every day.

Moonguide ,

Not anymore, due to my GAD and insomnia. Long story short, I was compensating how tired I was with how tense I would get from coffee. My psych told me to stop taking so much caffeine and it’s helped a lot to curb my anxiety.

I miss it though. Used to brew a fresh cup in the morning, noon, and afternoon. Freshly ground every time. It legitimately ruined every espresso shop in town for me. Burnt, bitter, or underbrewed. Only good coffee shop in town is a turkish one.

Moonguide ,

Bittersweet! I learnt a lot about coffee, and since my primary way of showing I care for people is giving them service, I have a new way to give it. Most people like coffee, and I know for a fact I make a good espresso. I just can’t drink it as often as I once did.

Do you have some kind of subconscious awareness of interests you already have or know you eventually will take deep dives into at some point in life?

I mean like awareness that, just under the surface, there are deep explorations waiting for the right time and place to emerge; things you’ve set aside or placed on the back burner but will tackle eventually/many you already have tackled....

Moonguide ,

Oh yeah. Music is one of em. Never learnt how to read sheets or much of anything about music theory. I mean, I only just learnt how time signatures work. I play the guitar sort of okay, and have a decent ear. But everything I’ve learnt has been by feel, and I really want to properly learn theory. I want to know how the circle of fifths works, how polyrythms work, etc. like, I have a feeling of how they work but I couldn’t really talk about it at length and I’d have a hard time figuring out why a section of a song sounded interesting. I dropped that desire some years ago, but with every new artist I discover I’m trying to break down how the music works in my head and often come up short.

Carpentry is another. Ever since I started playing guitar I wanted to build my own guitar from scratch. Then I took some industrial design classes in college and it cemented my interest in it. During lockdown I bought some tools but got distracted with other fleeting interests. Once I have enough space for a workshop, I’ll get on that.

Lastly, storywriting. Whatever I write, it feels like it’d be at home in a technical manual. Regardless of what language I write in, it feels stilted and sterile. I’ve been working on this one lately though. I’m DM’ing a campaign with a ton of homebrew and wrote and designed a 70 pages long handbook for my players. The ones that took the time to read it really liked the flavour and worldbuilding I did, so, progress.

Edit: forgot one, mead, and spirits in general. Made one batch years ago, with apple juice, cinnamon, and cloves. It was good after about 2 years. I still have a 2L bottle in my closet. At this point I think I should just bin it. For a time a friend and I were talking about making large batches of it and selling it on the DL as party drinks. Pineapple mead, mango mead, etc.

Comment less, but I’ve enjoyed it much more. There’s so much shit slinging in reddit. Every comment thread eventually devolves into one guy with an out of pocket comment or hot take, or miscommunication even, and then everyone dunking on the guy. So much negativity.

Folks are generally nice here.

Moonguide ,

Roasted garlic and/or roasted bone marrow. Soups, meat rubs, compound butters, whatever. The depth of flavours those two things add by themselves is amazing.

Moonguide ,

Couple years ago I won a scholarship to a college in Germany, for the carreer I had always wanted to work in but couldn’t practice it, as it just doesn’t exist in local colleges. I was born and bred in the third world, and still live here; I thought my luck was finally turning around. I’d be able to maybe have a better future, doing what I really wanted instead of just what I was good at.

One night as I was overthinking ish, I decided to look for everything relevant about the college. It was a scam college. No certifications, and the owners had recently been in hot waters due to money laundering. I had everything ready to hop on a plane.

Mystery/ crime/ horror novel recommendations?

ETA: I have read and downloaded many of your recommendations and have had lots of fun reading them! You are such a welcoming enthusiastic bunch. Thanks a lot! Still looking for more suggestions in case someone wants to add to the ever growing list. So far this year I have read twenty seven books....

Moonguide ,

Horror, last year I read Between two fires, cant remember the author. Felt like I was reading dark souls, but with more of a religious horror vibe. It was okay. Gave me ideas for my dnd campaigns.

A coop PvE game for two dads and three sons?
A shooter, preferably. Any recommendations, guys? The youngest lad is 10, so as little violence as possible. Thanks 😉

@gaming

Moonguide ,

Not FPS, but Valheim is plenty fun. Also, zomboid, but that ones a bit more violent

Moonguide ,

EpicLoot might also be good, if OP’s kids are keen to grind components.

Moonguide ,

Would you mind expanding on the open source realisations thing? I’m trying to get more into open source software but I’m a little too tech illiterate to understand the nuances, including what you just mentioned.

Moonguide ,

Well, shit. Didn’t know that. Thanks for the info. I was already using DP but now I know I’ll keep using it.

Moonguide ,

Replaying Dragon’s Dogma in prep for the new game. I had forgotten how much grind the game requires, honestly. I’ve been Mage 1-11, MArcher 6, Ranger 6, Sorc 30-40 or so, and my magic score is still low as hell. I’m purposefully delaying meeting the duke because I really want to give MArcher a try in the post-game, and it feels like I’ve already played for a long time but sheesh, levelling up is slow. I had never focused on building for stats, honestly. I know now though that most of your damage comes from your gear, so I might quit levelling Sorc when I reach 450 magic instead of the 600.

Hope it’s a little faster in the second entry.

Apart from that, trying the Nordic Souls modpack for Skyrim, and Helldivers 2.

Moonguide ,

Bacta Tanks. Maybe a few days in one would fix my back.

I want to get into coffee, where do I start?

So I have drank coffee on and off since I was a teenager, and I recently took probably a 2 year break from it. When I was drinking coffee, it was usually because they had a pod system at work, and it was an excuse to get up from my desk and take a break. With that said, I have been watching this Netflix show Resident Alien...

Moonguide ,

Honestly, go as complex as you’ll be able to put up with daily. Get a burr grinder if you think you’re willing to take 5 minutes every day measuring out and grinding coffee. It’ll guarantee the best performance possible from the beans you’re using. Paper or metal filters, up to you. Paper filters are probably better, metal filters are more convenient. A good kettle is a must, I think. Stovetop or electric, as long as it has a goose neck. Trying to get a good bloom without one is a PITA.

Moonguide ,

Idles, Ghost, Wind Rose, and Parquet Courts. For musicians who are no longer around, definitely John Coltrane and Audioslave/Soundgarden. They all seem like they put on a hell of a show and the people who listen to them seem to not be assholes for the most part.

Moonguide ,

Binge info. I look up whatever random question was bugging me earlier that day/week/month, and try and read everything even tangentially related. By the end I’m distracted enough I forgot about being sad.

Not a solution though. On the upside, I got to learn a bit more.

Moonguide ,

Pour over is probably it. I got my mum, who prefers simple solutions, a steel filter. It’s got little holes in it. Got a v60 as well. It’s done really quickly and is very forgiving with grind size. Most demanding step of the whole process for her was pouring it over in circles.

Still pulls out the percolator sometimes though. Doesn’t like standing over the stove doing nothing. Tastes bitter as all hell but hey, she’s done her coffee that way her entire life.

Moonguide ,

IMO the problem at this point is leadership. They’ve realized people will buy their shit if they sell a cheap, surface-deep fantasy with interesting visuals and let folks do a very limited number of different things in a single playthrough. Because of that, there’s no nuance to their worlds. They want to make a sandbox game with no reactivity.

Unless leadership resigns I won’t expect anything else than the equivalent of a gas station meal.

Moonguide ,

Just finished Dune Messiah. It was good, but I liked the first one more. Feel like it could’ve been shorter, while at the same time I feel like I would’ve appreciated more info on how the jihad affected people outside Arrakeen.

I’ll probably start on either Colour of Magic or Gardens of the Moon next.

Moonguide ,

I’m a new DM (and new to TTRPGs in general). I’m using bard and chatgpt to keep track of homebrew stuff.

I’m running an almost completely custom system, adapted to ASOIAF. Races (renamed to origins), classes, backgrounds, feats, etc. extra mechanics like duelling systems and large battle simulations, and faction interaction systems. It’s a lot, and I find it easier for me to have the bot spray solutions to whatever issue I run into, then grab the one that might work, and refine it until it might sound fun. I need to get a system in order to keep track of my campaign, though. Tried WorldAnvil and honestly, I don’t need that many tools. Might go back to Notion and keep track of all the factions and characters that way. Gonna be a lot of work though.

Moonguide ,

Obsidian.md? Did you get it from GitHub?

Moonguide ,

Hm, imma look into it. Shame it isn’t FOSS. Thanks for the tip!
