Check your local running stores. The app Meetup can be a good place to start, too.

communism , to asklemmy in How do you pronounce zsh? Sudo? Ssh?
@communism@lemmy.ml avatar

Zush rhymes with kush in my head. But out loud I say the letters because I think zush probably isn’t how you’re supposed to say it

Soo-dough (dough like the stuff you knead)

Es-es-aych

Oh also, I’ve found myself pronouncing the normal English word “gnome” as “guh nome” now because that’s how the DE is pronounced lol

Going through OPs past posts, it’s interesting…

I hope you find the help ya need.

It usually implies it’s weird in an old-fasioned way though.

I mean, APT is able to do exactly the same as yay with the apt build command. I don’t know of any, but I’m sure there are images/distros out there that will build the whole OS with apt in a similar way.

When I was 4 I fell into a pool because I thought I could walk on the pool cover. I remember hanging onto the side of the pool, and the sound of my breathing.

Dialogue with my friends, we were contemplating about how we first met. Funny that none of us remembered how we met.

Why not a pinned megathread? Or extend the already pinned megathread.

The megathread here is simply too small to be noticed by the wider target group.

It’s not worth to be tied to any social media.

cobysev , to asklemmy in How do you pronounce zsh? Sudo? Ssh?

As a former IT guy, I got used to just saying “secure shell” every time I saw SSH, to help teach my younger IT folks the lingo. I don’t even say the acronym anymore. When I did, I just spoke the letters (es-es-aich).

Same for ZSH; I just call it Z-Shell (zee-shell).

Sudo has always been “soo-doh” (or “sue-dough” as OP spelled it; same pronunciation). I’ve never met anyone who pronounced it differently in my 20 years of IT work.

MrVilliam , to asklemmy in Do you approve sex work? Why or why not?
Modern_medicine_isnt ,

When I see that I think both should be illegal.

MrVilliam ,

At least that’s a consistent viewpoint. What I despise is demonizing sex work but not exploitative labor practices. It’s totally illogical to me that people will pride themselves on working 12+ hour days, skip breaks, come in on days off, work nights and weekends and holidays, etc but look down on people who have an OnlyFans or whatever. I don’t really understand criticizing one without the other.

Personally, I don’t give a shit about sex work. If it were fully legal and workers were protected and everything, I still don’t know that I would pay for it, but I sure as shit wouldn’t fight to take that choice away from others. It just wouldn’t really affect me. Same thing for access to safe drugs or abortions. I’m not going to advocate for other people to not have choices in their personal freedoms, so I guess I’ll fight for people to have access even for things I’m not that interested in for myself.

Facebones ,

Thats what it takes, and what we lack today - fighting for personal choice even when we dont like one or more of them.

Instead today people harp about freedom until you even scratch the surface and find out they mean the freedom to make the same choices they did and none other.

figaro , to asklemmy in What's your most profound "small world" moment?

Met a girl while being an English teacher in China. She was originally from New York. She had a very distinctive voice, very hard to forget.

Fast forward 10 years. I’m at the Santa Monica Pier playing Pokemon Go with my brother. Suddenly, THAT VOICE. I’m like… No… That isn’t possible. I keep on walking.

We reach the end of the pier, and turn around. And BOOM. There she is. We make eye contact, and are both like wtffff.

Turns out she moved there to do a podcast or something.

Anyway cool shit

carl_dungeon , to selfhosted in I spent ~$35 on new cables and my LAN speed increased 6x

You can get gigabit over 5e, you don’t need super expensive cables. That said I ran cat 6 through my whole house and am able to fully saturate the bus, about 115 MBps (920 Mbps) which accounts for the TCP overhead. I haven’t tried 2/5/10G on it bull I’ll probably upgrade in a few years, I don’t expect to have much trouble getting good speeds. Your biggest issue was you might not have had all the cable pairs in your wire, or your cables ends might have been crusty, or you could have had bad kinks in the wire causing packet loss, or some real absolute trash quality wire. In general, 5e and 6 are plenty for most people/situations to get good speeds (1Gb+)
