So you’ve met creationists.

Not in person, no. But I’ve had biology profs say that something was “just a theory”.

Just use Conversations. It’s fine.

Opisek , to asklemmy in What web browser extensions would you highly recommend to others?

Besides what everyone else already said: Vimium-C. It lets you use Vim bindings in your browser. It’s also extremely customizable and even works with my bizzare keyboard setup.

Too long, doesn’t work right in most apps, makes me think someone commented on the article while there’s only this bot’s post.

Asudox , to nostupidquestions in How much salt water to kill a tree?

There’s a reason why plants are called complex interconnected organisms. If you put salt on the soil where that tree is growing, it also might reach to other plants in the area and kill them as well.

Descriptive linguists unite! Words evolve and that’s okay. Really science should pivot away and start calling more proven theories a different word if they’re upset about the confusion.

The etymology of the word theory comes from meaning closer to “to look at or speculate” so even in that sense science kind of hijacked a word that was further from the modern scientific understanding of the word “theory” and descriptively transformed it themselves for use in their community. And that’s okay too.

MeowZedong ,
@MeowZedong@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Counterpoint:

The language of science is specific because it is beneficial to have standards that allow explicit specificity. Scientific linguistics evolve differently from the way colloquial linguistics evolves due to different motivations and this difference is okay.

The real problem isn’t that scientific language is too strict but that we gatekeep scientific participation in every form, preventing most people from participating in such a way that scientific communication is not confusing. This is in addition to most scientific publications being unnecessarily written in inaccessible language. Specificity is helpful, but the excessive use of jargon and buzz-words to make yourself sound smarter through obtuse language is unhelpful for everyone involved. When jargon cannot be avoided, define it. If you cannot define it, reference a definition.

Clarity and accessibility in all scientific communication is the key to understanding.

jordanlund , to explainlikeimfive in What's up with JD Vance and couches??
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

There was a fake story that he wrote about humping a couch in his book, Hillbilly Elegy.

It’s been completely debunked, but people still talk about it because it’s funny.

dwindling7373 ,

because they are stupid

Fixed that for you.

jewbacca117 ,

It’s because JD vance is a fucking weirdo. I didn’t like pushing false stories about people, but he’s just such a smarmy motherfucker it fits so well. He is a detestable person with detestable views.

dwindling7373 ,

No. It’s clearly a stupid thing to do. Being detached from the complex truth of things is 90% of the problem with mankind, as far as politics go. I thought there was substance behind these jokes but it’s all made up.

I’m sure there’s plenty of real things to underscore what a massive duche Trump VP is. Making things up about him, or anybody else, should be illegal (and it is) for good reasons.

dwindling7373 ,

I don’t know, you tell me. It looks like we are considering those fair game to gain the upper hand on our opposition…

EDIT: oh you meant the legality? Well, it’s America so the law doesn’t really apply the way one would expect.

MrScottyTay ,

It’s not at all that. It’s too reflect what the republicans have done for years now. But this story is funny and obviously fake so it’s even more funny when you can see it actually getting under the skin of vance and other republicans. That’s why it gets repeated so often. I understand this and I’m not even American.

dwindling7373 ,

To* reflect?

So it’s not that it’s wrong it was all about envying them and finally we can engage in the same behaviour too?

Someone's mad that Trump has lost the mandate of heaven (shitposters)

dwindling7373 ,

Trump never had a mandate from heaven, primarily because heaven does not exists and if it did exist it wouldn’t grant any kind of mandate since the point is to let stuff go any which way and then judge souls after death.

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Theres more to it. AP published a fact check titled something like “No, JD Vance did not have sex with a couch”.

Later they took this down because they were unable confirm he did not have sex with a couch, only that he did not say so in his book.

As you can guess, this added a lot of fuel to the fire.

I’d suggest reading this: knowyourmeme.com/…/jd-vance-couch-cushion-story-h…

TL:DR Some Twitter user posted a made up story about JD Vance having sexual with a couch, “which led to news publications uncritically repeating the hoax story as fact.”

Total Commander - pretty much essential to have a file manager.

Kde Connect obviously.

Tracker Control to block ads, trackers.

Syncthing if you want to synchronize files between devices, good for backups and photos.

LordWiggle , to lemmyshitpost in Night shift sucks
@LordWiggle@lemmy.world avatar

In the navy I preferred the night shifts. Nice and quiet. Day shifts were hectic, always stupid shit happening. Night shifts in the CIC were cozy, chill, having some coffee together, making grilled cheese sandwiches, being able to do work in full concentration as no one bothers you constantly. On the bridge it was even better. Extreme darkness, having nice conversations with your colleagues while watching the stars and the lights of other ships on the horizon. Only downside is the night shift has to get out of bed for fire drills etc during the day, so sometimes that leaves you with only 2h of sleep every day during sea trials. But that’s only 2 to 6 weeks of sleep deprivation so not all too bad imo.

ms_lane , to technology in Portable music player

I have a FiiO M3 Pro.

It’s a great player, over 120DB SNR! and DSD if you think you need it.

Codec wise it supports most everything except Opus but is now discontinued (FiiO only sells players for the uber-rich now - entry level is US$499.99 for the M11S)

If you can get one used, they’re a great player.

I’ve heard good things about the HiBy Digital M300 - but i’ve never tried one.
