Tectonic plates are about as fast as the growth of finger and toe nails

phoenixz ,

If I started to lety fingernails grow around the time of Pangea, I’d have some pickass fingernails that would be a bitch while programming.

I’d also have a nail fungus from the pkanet hell.

Donjuanme ,

I feel like that would be much much faster than 100 words per minute… But scale is hard

Taken from below, the Atlantic Ocean expands 1 cm per year, this is much slower than my finger nails grow

Sheit, right, units.

I don’t like that this chart makes it seem like all are valid. Science is literally defined by method. Material realism is maybe less strict, but it can’t be science if the scientific method isn’t followed.

whydudothatdrcrane OP ,

As the author of the meme I disagree that such impression is given as to “toddlers destroying their toys” or “French surrealism” and Marxism being equivalent. May I draw your attention to these neatly distinguishable squares that break the chart up to ample separable plots? They are there to separate things rather than showing their equivalence.

j4k3 , to linux_gaming in Anyone using Linux-libre for gaming?
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

Is this truly possible? I thought you will have microcode in any (x86) instance unless you’re using Libreboot on an ancient Core Duo. Even then Leah will tell you, ‘while you can technically run without the microcode blob it will not run correctly’ even back then (IIRC).

As far as I understand it, the microcode was the hotfix for the expired original x86 patents, so pretty much universally required on all newer systems.

I’m no expert, but does the CPU scheduler work without microcode? How does the kernel determine the ISA available. I’m mostly curious because Intel 12th gen P-cores have a chance of including the more advanced enterprise server AVX instruction set. If any kernel does not require microcode, the scheduler must have a way to differentiate and manage running processes automatically so that a process with an AVX command is never interrupted and moved to the next available logical core where that core could be an E-core. That or there must be some scheme to create CPU set isolation and a way to determine if the more advanced AVX instructions are present. This would require an interesting way of handling spin up of idle cores, power management, and a complex way of handling thread interrupts.

I probably wouldn’t understand most of what I might find on such a system, but it would be fun to read about and try to grasp. I think such a think is likely in the future, perhaps we are already in that future. I largely live under a rock, so let me know if we are there yet.

dharmacurious , to showerthoughts in There should be a semicolon punctuation for exclamation and question marks.

¿Perhaps something like this: 1000010473?

olafurp , (edited )

Out of all the additions to punctuation I’ve seen this is the one I find myself needing most often. Interrobangs are easily written as “?!” and even most other ones can be quick fixed with storytelling like “said lovingly”, “said with authority” and whatnot.

But “Is that the best, or is it just what we have?” is an absolutely horrible thing to write punctuation for when you mean it as two connected questions like “Is that the best? Or is it just what we have?”

It should obviously be replaced with a question comma. There are so many cases where you also have the question in the middle of the sentence such as “Is that okay (question comma) because I don’t think so…”

dharmacurious ,

I’ve thought the same thing many times. I love interrobang (not least of which for it’s kickass name), but the same sentiment can be expressed in other ways. Dialogue can convey the others, but if you want to recreate the way humans actually speak English, you need a mid sentence punctuation, like a comma, that can express questioning. Even in speech, we change our intonation to be higher when questioning, and we do that sometimes in the middle of a sentence. It’s just not conveyable perfectly with our current set of symbols.

HEXN3T OP ,
@HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Exactly this. If you know what a semicolon and question mark/exclamation point’s purpose is, then you know how this punctuation works. The best tool is that which requires no manual at all. Occam’s Razor, or something along those lines.

Rhynoplaz , to showerthoughts in Texting has probably enabled more affairs recently

I know this is true FOR A FACT.

I sold phones in the early 2000s and had at least one customer with only ONE condition. Unlimited text, because his girlfriend was married.

Also, that’s how my ex-wife used to chat with my former best friend

Sadly, they couldn’t be together because he had to go to prison. Free advice: before you sucker punch someone for having “a look”, make sure they aren’t a Federal Agent having a beer after work.

peopleproblems ,

My ex wife prefered snap chat.

So you know, I just happened to get traumatized by another dudes dick in my wife’s phone after her nude photos I’ve never seen. I don’t know who he was other than her admitting it was a guy she cheated on me with 5 years ago.

No I’m not over it. Its been over a year, and because of the toxic nature of our relationship I don’t have confidence to go out there and meet other people. It’s fine, I’m fine. I’ve got video games and a shower to cry in.

But fuck smartphones. I hate this goddamn technology more than I hate my ex.

Plopp ,

That sucks. But it also happened before smartphones. Ask me how I know.

CanadaPlus , (edited ) to world in Media Bias Fact Check - Automation

Hmm. It’s not a perfect way of measuring source bias, and bias is only correlated with truthfulness as I think they themselves admit, but I applaud the spirit.

I worry that people will put too much stock in it’s assessment, and as far as I can tell propaganda posting is already pretty controlled, on .world specifically. Did you code this yourselves? Is there some way one of us could request to push to the source, like if I figure out some way it could be better? In particular, it would be good to add notes on the specific sources commenters have described as having issues not covered by MBFC.

Rooki OP ,
@Rooki@lemmy.world avatar

Currently the code is for now private. We will see if we can make it public in the future. The mods wont moderate posts because of the MBFC result.
