dragonfly4933 , to datahoarder in I'm pretty sure my Amazon renewed HDD is DOA. Anyway I can make sure before I return it?

I would return it, but if you are curious you can try some of the following to get experiencing identifying bad disks.

You could try a different computer or controller to be sure.

If you can get some writes/reads to work, you can use badblocks or dm-crypt: wiki.archlinux.org/title/Badblocks#Alternatives

Badblocks will write known data to disk then read it to verify its good. If the disk is malicious, this can be faked. badblocks is also a little slow.

Using dm-crypt in the wiki will write zeros through dm-crypt which will result in random noise being written to disk, then compare with zeros to verify reads are good. This can not be faked easily since the zero stream is encrypted as it is written to disk.

sdiown , to asklemmy in Do you think the world would have been a better place if there were no religions?

Not really, religion makes rules and people follow them. The point is that, yes, we humans can create “rules”, but the question is who is going to create these rules, who are you going to choose as the rule-maker, and how are you going to make sure that everyone follows this rule because everyone has their own ideas or morals about it? Religion must and will exist. Even today, what we create as “rules” certainly come from religion, or at least are closely linked to it. People and their morals come from religion, there must be some power over people to make these rules. Let me give you an example, I am a human being who forbids eating apples, as another human being, if there is no consequence, why should I obey it? Because according to me or according to my morality there is no harm in eating it. And who is right in this situation? No one. Then who are we supposed to listen to? A power superior to us humans. I hope that answers your questions.

BarrelAgedBoredom , to nostupidquestions in What's your take on marijuana consumption while attending AA or NA?

Within the broad context of AA and NA, I believe these organizations don’t permit the use of marijuana for members. That said, they’re decentralized support networks that vary from chapter to chapter so what may be ok for one group may not fly in another. I think if someone has made the decision to try a 12 step program, it is in their best interest to attempt the version of sobriety and recovery that is offered by it. It doesn’t work for everyone though and if pot is necessary to ensure the long term avoidance of other harmful substances, by all means. Do your thing.

When I was a kid, I went to NA meetings with my dad sometimes and almost almost all of the members smoked and drank coffee. Social stigma is a big part of what makes addiction life destroying and as time has gone on, pot has come to be viewed more like beer or tobacco instead of meth and heroin. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that weed has become more integrated into people’s lives as they move away from harder substances during recovery.

One last caveat: weed can just as easily hamper someone’s recovery as it can help it. I’ve had friends and family relapse after smoking because they thought it would be ok. All it did was make them crave their substance of choice more. Weed isn’t some miracle cure for recovery from hard substances, it seems like more of a coin flip whether it will help you or harm you in the long run

Religion is just a tool. A tool is only as good as the person using it.

Ooh, this is very interesting. I’m a sucker for emulator progress reports, just a fascinating intersection of programming, graphics, and gaming. My personal RSS feeds right now (which I’d love to add lemmy discussion to) are:

PhilipTheBucket OP ,

I made !emulator_announce with all of those feeds. I’m not sure, but I think that will be more useful than breaking it out into a bunch of communities and letting people deal with them individually. Is that just as useful for you?

Hazzard ,

I’m inclined to agree! That’s awesome, adding that to my following immediately.

@whoisearth@lemmy.ca avatar

Too many angry people calling to eat (read murder) the rich. These pussies wouldn’t so much as be found outside at a protest let alone speak a disparaging word to a millionaire.

They need to grow the fuck up. I’m as anti-capitalist as one could be but I’m not naive enough to think violence will solve the problem.

Unfortunately, their hate filled rhetoric is expanding and I don’t see cooler heads prevailing. I fear for my kids.

I don’t know, but it seems like the kind of thing that you should talk to them about. I mean, you’d be going to AA and/or NA due to trying to overcome addiction. If you’re coping with your addiction using weed, maybe they’d have an opinion about it.

That said, my guess is that they’d be against it, partly because of the religious roots. www.reddit.com/r/atheism/s/glPy8tGvjw
