Unciv is pretty cool, it is Civ 5 but you can play on mobile as well. It was great to have the “One more turn” feel while stuck on a train.

Not the best…

  • I haven’t been able to find a job in my field (IT) for about a year, any opportunities which I think I have secured are ripped out from under me at the last moment. Two weeks ago I was waiting on hearing back about a 4th and final interview with CrowdStrike…then they screwed up 8 million Windows PCs and cost businesses about 5.5 billion dollars.
  • My brother has come to terms with his alcoholism and it’s been a rough few months for my parents. He’s 42 and has a 4 year old daughter, and her mother is an absolute nightmare to deal with (they aren’t together). My brother lives nextdoor to my parents …but I live 1300 miles away. We thought he was doing pretty well for the past month…but it turns out he was eating like the equivalent of one piece of beef jerky a day (in total) and not drinking any liquids other than (a reduced amount of) alcohol. He has been on blood pressure medication and apparently mistakenly doubled up on that, passed out at the top of his outside steps one night last week, fell down the steps and broke two of his front teeth badly. He’s been in the hospital for the past few days so they can get him stable. My parents are going to recommend in-patient recovery to him, because he wants to get sober, but can’t really manage to do it himself. My parents are 67 and 74, so it’s a ton of stress on them as well.
  • And the least of my problems: my short term memory is terrible (I’m 38 with ADHD). I’ve been attempting to learn how to dance Casino (Cuban Salsa), but I can’t remember a damn thing, I have practically zero rhythm, and my body is fucked up from minor scoliosis in two places which throws off my weight/center of balance and makes me shoulders tight (I’m “round shouldered”). I’ve gone to about 30 classes, but I’m still stuck on the very basics 😑
  • Also just feeling like shit today, physically, but that’s because I was up until 5 AM playing a board game with a few friends and took too much Ambien (I’ve been taking it on and off for about 20 years and steadily for the past 9 months or so while talking to a psychiatrist about my insomnia) because even though I had been awake for about 20 hours I was still pretty alert.

I just keep telling myself it could be a hell of a lot worse though.

LainTrain ,

I’d say lay off the gaba dealies withdrawals for em can be insomnia, otherwise you know what you’re doing it seems.

I feel you on the job thing, when I was 23 it took me many months to find a job in IT, it was awful, I remember the stress of it, I needed it desperately to stay in the country, otherwise I’d be deported to hell.

pete_the_cat ,

I’m an insomniac anyway, Id’ rather knock myself out than stay awake for like a day or two straight and be miserable due to lack of sleep. I actually take Gabapentin as well, which helped me not feel like ass in the morning (the usual outcome of taking like 15 mg of Ambien, previous to about 2-3 years ago)

I feel you on the job thing, when I was 23 it took me many months to find a job in IT, it was awful, I remember the stress of it, I needed it desperately to stay in the country, otherwise I’d be deported to hell.

Luckily I’m a citizen so I don’t have to worry about that, but yeah, it’s absolutely miserable and demeaning. Half of the time is spent creating an account for something that you’ll never use again, verifying that your resume was parsed correctly, and then answering the same bullshit discrimination questions. 30% of it is spent wading through all the job postings from recruiters with horrible/useless job descriptions, and if you find one you like, talking to them for 20 minutes about the exact same stuff that’s on your resume and you go into detail about it and they stop you because they have no clue what you’re talking about. My mom keeps telling me “you may have to go for something that you don’t want” because she doesn’t understand that getting a helpdesk job takes just as much effort as getting a Linux System Engineer job.

I really wouldn’t call this AI. It is more or less an inage identification system that relies on machine learning.

Bourff ,

That was pretty much the definition of AI before LLM came.

stormeuh ,

And much before that it was rule-based machine learning, which was basically databases and fancy inference algorithms. So I guess “AI” has always meant “the most advanced computer science thing which looks kind of intelligent”. It’s only now that it looks intelligent enough to fool laypeople into thinking there actually is intelligence there.

dharmacurious , to nostupidquestions in Is this normal for girls or just a extreme edge case? (Serious question)

Anything even remotely phallic shaped and sized has probably been used like that by someone. Depends on how horny you are, both in the moment, and as a person in general. I’m a guy, but during puberty, when I was exploring masturbation and bottoming, lemme tell you, nothing was safe from getting fucked or fucking me.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned about your produce, though. Most folks would toss it afterwards. If you notice your cucumbers or bananas going missing, then it might be cause for concern. But honestly, if your kids are at that age, and you’re genuinely concerned they’re doing something that might cause harm, the bigger concern is a lack of information about safe sex. A no questions asked Amazon gift card is one idea, but I’d recommend finding a good book or website you trust with sex Ed info, including safe solo sex practices, and an agreement that packages that come in their name aren’t to be opened by anyone else. In my experience, parents who trust their kids and don’t snoop or invade their privacy have way less to worry about from their kids than the parents who toss their rooms. My friends with the strictest parents had great hiding spots, I never even tried to find any. Didn’t need to hide anything, and as embarrassing as it would have been had I gotten a cucumber stuck up there or something, I would have been able to tell my mom and get a ride to the ER. If your kids seriously don’t trust you not to freak out, they could end up literally dying because the embarrassment would be worse than not dealing with a medical issue.

I’m in the corporate world, I’m a hiring manager. I refuse to have a linkedin. Everyone says they wish they could do the same - then do it. Do the same. Nothing happened to me, nothing will happen to you other than your life being better because you aren’t on Linkedin.

edit: grammar

SmackemWittadic ,
@SmackemWittadic@lemmy.world avatar

I really wish there was one. I’m looking around right now and I wish there was a better alternative

AeonFelis ,

The problem is corporate culture. LinkedIn is merely reflecting it. Any other platform for job seekers would have the same issues.

noobdoomguy8658 ,
@noobdoomguy8658@feddit.org avatar

Not if it’s treated like a social media for whatever reason.

Xing (German) and Headhunter (Russian), for instance, both allow you to hunt for jobs and browse companies all without Facebook-like posts and corporate culture.

LinkedIn is a very curious artifact of moronic cargo cult-like chase for money and market share where companies just try and copy whatever the big player did, like Facebook at the time, hoping to make loads of money for the investors and stakeholders, but the absolutely anti-human corporate culture of the US makes the place is even more moronic.

Plastic_Ramses ,

Passerby6497 ,

I only use linked in every few years when I job hop. Literally the only reason I refuse to get rid of it entirely is that I doubled my salary the time I got a job.

blady_blah ,

That seems so weird. Linked in is simply a way to connect with co-workers so you can contact them when you’re no longer at the same job. I don’t have them in my Facebook, I didn’t have them in my phone, but if I want to contact them for connections or anything, LinkedIn is the place for that. How much you interact with the posting garbage is entirely up to you. I do it extremely little and I have no problem with LinkedIn.

ohlaph ,

That’s the only reason I keep mine as well.

citrusface ,

I provide my phone number and email to coworkers that I want to connect with when they leave a job. Linkedin is corporate hustle poison and I refuse to be part of it.

blady_blah ,

Hey, whatever works for you. There are many people who I’m friendly with, but I’m not friends with, and they can be useful to find out information about employment opportunities or other things like that. Whether or not you want to call it “corporate hustle poison” or networking, or just being friendly is up to you. If you refuse to be part of it, no skin off my back, but if someone wants to be part of it then that’s perfectly fine too. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with LinkedIn, Facebook or almost any other social media platform. It’s really in how you use it.

Contramuffin , to technology in My LibreOffice install broke and there's this Calligra software that caught my eye, should I switch or just reinstall?

I don’t particularly like the layout of libreoffice, but I find that onlyoffice works for me. Not as feature rich, I suspect, but it doesn’t disrupt my workflow due to how similar it is to Microsoft Office

HStone32 , to programmerhumor in Anyone here use assembly?

Not exactly accurate, I think. Even machine language is bound by the CPU’s architecture. You can’t do anything in machine language that wasn’t specifically provided for by the CPU architects.

It would be more accurate to say it’s like creating a new universe using all the same laws of physics, thermodynamics, cosmology, ethics, etc as our existing universe.

UNY0N ,

I don’t think accuracy was the goal, it is a joke not a dissertation. It’s more about how it feels to try a language like assembly after working with higher-level languages.
