astrionic , to gaming in I finally got a Switch! What now?

My personal favourites on the Switch are Metroid Dread and Mario Odyssey, so I’d definitely recommend those. Another game I love that I don’t see mentioned very often is Cadence of Hyrule, it’s a crossover between Crypt of the Necrodancer (a rhythm roguelike) and Zelda. With Zelda soundtrack of course! If you like 2D Mario you’ll probably want to get Mario Maker 2, but be aware that it’s not worth it if you don’t want to pay for a Switch Online subscription since wouldn’t be able to play other people’s levels.

Mario Kart 8 and Smash Ultimate are both really good, but I’d only recommend them if you intend to play multiplayer. Especially local multiplayer is fun, but online works too of course (again, needs a subscription).

The Switch also has some cool remasters and remakes of games you might have missed, like Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Metroid Prime, Zelda: Skyward Sword, or the first three Pikmin games (the fourth one comes out this week and I’d be surprised if you needed knowledge of any previous games to play it). Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl were a bit lacklustre, but if you like classic Pokémon games they might still be worth it. Just don’t expect a lot of new stuff if you’ve played the originals.

I’ve played them on PC, but Stardew Valley and Celeste are some of my favourite games. If you haven’t played them on another platform already check them out as well!

Smash Ultimate definitely has more than enough single-player content to warrant buying it

astrionic ,

Maybe it’s just me then but I don’t really find the singleplayer content in Smash particularly interesting. I’ve only played it for a few hours. But yeah especially Ultimate does have a lot of stuff.

If I send an email to [email protected], it should be copied to [email protected] because it is the same thing, right?

Lemmy isn’t Reddit. It has similar capabilities, but it is fundamentally different. Think email or web hosting, not one stop shop.

burndown ,

I see your point but this is not a valid analogy

cerevant ,

Choosing different communities with the stated purpose is all about context: the policies of the mods, the policies of the admins, and the reputation of the instance. Yes, it isn’t a perfect analogy, but people need to shift how the think about the Lemmy/Kbin model from how they think about Reddit, and the example that seems to connect most easily with users is e-mail. Maybe a more subtle / apt analogy would be [email protected] has an obviously different context and significantly different content than [email protected], but the same stated purpose (and community name).

The problem is that it isn’t just the users who are confused about this: Lemmy admins seem to each have the goal of being “the place to be”, and Kbin goes out of its way to devalue off-instance content. I personally think (primarily) user instances should be separate from (primarily) content instances, but that would take a coordinated effort by the admins. We are starting to see some grass roots efforts at making that happen, though the actions of the admins may prevent that from taking hold.

Pretty much, but i I think as the apps and front ends mature, we’ll be able to set up personal “multireddits.” I don’t mind signing up for the multiple communities because I understand why or is that way. However, do think the instances are forming more from simple load distribution and less from the types of deep seated shared interests that may have been predicted. The result is that there are more communities than expected that might benefit from being "collated", but that will be a pretty personal decision.

Look at vacumn command. Also dbeaver is a teally good gui tool. Right now there is one table thats the main cause (i think its called activity but dont quote me on that there was a post about it)

That table is mainly for debugging as it logs every action in activitypub your instance does. I truncate it once a week and vacumn it (shrinks the disk space used). Caution. You must shut down lemmy before doing so. I run containers so i stop all except postgres and clean it up.

Penguincoder ,

You really don’t want to do a vacuum full on the live DB, it will lock everything. While useful and necessary I think, you have got to plan down time for it. Or your site is going to be inaccessible anyway.

You are exactly correct about that one table. It is like 90% of the space. When I ran the vacuum I did not shutdown Lemmy. Now I know.

JubBurnsRed53 , to nostupidquestions in Is it worth paying the reaminder of my car loan off?

I see, and I hope I’m not coming off as patronizing or anything; however, what happens at the end of the 6 years if you fail to pay everything back? From my understanding of 0% interest loans (which I’m not a particularly financially savy person), if it’s not paid back by the end of that time (6 years in this case) you’ll most likely receive huge penalties. Not only to your credit score, but also to your wallet since you’ll probably be required to pay back much more at that point. Maybe you don’t make regular monthly payments, and there are no immediate penalties, but at the end of those 6 years you’ll still owe what’s left. I’d rather make a bunch of $350 payments than one $12.5k payment. Unless you could afford that, I just don’t think most people can ¯\(ツ)/¯

I just think staying in your current payment plan would be best. No matter what, you’d have saved at least $350 for your car each month, you might as well just pay it as it goes. Don’t pay it of too early it anything, but do what you can to reach that end goal. I could be wrong, but I doubt a car dealership would give out an untimed, pay whenever you want loan to somebody. Most dealers are out to make money and giving somebody a loan like that wouldn’t do them any favors. Even if you have good credit.

With 0% interest there’s no incentive to pay it off any sooner but that also means that if you aren’t paying sooner you aren’t getting any penalty.

Instead, you can literally do anything else you want with the extra money you might have otherwise spent on paying off the loan early. You can invest it or just stick it in a savings account since those are pretty high-yield right now.

In today’s high-interest financing environment, having a low interest loan around is practically an asset; take full advantage of it because it’s going to be a minute before we see cars again being sold at 0% interest (unless car companies get super desperate)

Sure YouTube sucks. But stealing the content from it isn’t fair on the people who worked incredibly hard to make said content. One of the beast thing about Reddit og days was discovering amazing content creators from people sharing their videos directly from the source. And no, a sticky comment or comment from the “op”, sorry content theif, isn’t good enough. Just sharing the god damn origin of the original source. This also goes for music, news, images, etc. But also, if you don’t like being tracked, use non-tracking links or piped for YouTube etc…

Yes, they are. They are stylish and pacy and all the rest. They are also very much of their time and, as well, are a completely different beast to the movies: they are spy stories primarily - not action adventures (though both of those are still there), and are much more low key overall.

+1 to the good advice, keep investing in a brokerage account. Vanguard has great index funds and you could go with a 3 fund portfolio like VTSAX/VTIAX/VBTLX. I found the target date fund and built the ratios off that but there’s plenty of people who do something like 60/30/10 and let it sit.
