Lately using Silverblue. Everything is a flatpak or is layered. Both are easy to list.

Maybe a handful of things in distrobox I need to keep track of.

Names of robots or AIs, mostly.

Some names used in my household:

  • Ralf (the computer of the main character in Whiz Kids)
  • GLaDOS
  • Wheatley (the stupid core in Portal 2)
  • Lal (Data’s daughter)
oaklandnative , to linux in What portable utilities do you carry with you.

I didn’t realize you can have an OS ISO and other programs on the same USB stick. I thought the live boot ISO had to be the only thing on the stick (or multiple ISOs using Ventoy).

TWeaK ,

No reason you can’t also have a data partition on the drive, provided your drive is big enough.

heimchen OP ,

I looking into buying the usb-c 3.2 gen2 from Kingston with up to 1000/900 read write speed and the minimum is 256GiB so space is no issue.

TWeaK ,

Yeah I have some decently speedy USB-A 3.0 drives, they’re essential to me these days. Although I’ve filled them with too much crap to use as a boot drive for anything lol. They’re only 400MBps, but weren’t expensive.

One thing I’ve noticed though, it ends up saturating a pair of USB ports in a lot of computers. If I have a second thing in an adjacent port, eg a mouse, things get screwy (mouse movement gets choppy or speeds throttle).

heimchen OP ,

It works, just watch out, Windows only recognizes the first partition on a stick as possible storage device.

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

With Ventoy you can have additional files on the same partition. However Ventoy scans everything on that partition, so additional files can slow it down. I recommend creating a directory, say named “Files” and put an empty file “.ventoyignore” into it which makes Ventoy ignore that directory and all sub-directories.

jws_shadotak ,

Oh that’s awesome.

jws_shadotak , (edited ) to linux in What portable utilities do you carry with you.

Hiren’s boot CD

It’s a small ISO with tons of utilities on it. It’s great for recovering data if shit goes really south. I always have one handy.

Edit: toss it onto your ventoy stick

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Which Hiren’s boot? The old official 15.2 or the new PE version?

jws_shadotak ,

I use the new PE version since it’s still maintained and has had something to fix any of my problems so far.

What mod log? How do I view this on jerboa? Why don’t I receive a notification of mod action?

oshitwaddup ,

It’s on the bottom of the page on web, it’s a log of moderator activity. Can’t view on jerboa, and probably nobody programmed a notification like that, either not having time or just nobody thought to

muddybulldog , (edited )

There’s no facility to be notified on mod action. If you care, you can read the modlog.

I only engage through Jerboa, how do I know that an action was mod action to then go to another access portal to hunt down why my post has disappeared? Seems counterintuitive.

Pyroglyph , to selfhosted in What is your machine naming scheme?
@Pyroglyph@lemmy.world avatar

I tend to name mine after their physical appearance, though I’m leaning towards space-related names now.

I’ll copy a Discord message I sent someone while explaining my naming scheme:

in chronological order: my very old laptop was black and grey so it was Batman my first build had orange/gold fans so it was Aurum my next build was black and white so it was Mono my current build had lots of RGB so it was Nova (like supernova) my home server has the BitFenix wings logo so it was Flight my laptop is sleek and pretty speedy so it was Comet

snrkl ,

First macbook air was ethereal, nas was bitbucket, first macbook pros deathstar then dreadnaught, second bigger nas was abyss…

More recently I’ve been using Neal Stevenson characters and themes.

Mobile wass “primer”, high spec laptop was “reason”, workhorse laptop was “chevaline”…

Work servers I’ve always liked two themes:

Chaos or medications:

Anarchy, bedlam, disturbed, chaos, mayhem, futility, entropy, maelstrom,

Sudafed, NyQuil, Tylenol, advil, codeine, morphine, panadol, Valium,

I’ve been running Debian 11 and now 12 on an HP EliteBook 840 G5 (i7 8550U) and everything works out flawlessly out of the box. When I say everything I really mean everything, even special keyboard keys for brightness, volume working after install. Battery lasts way longer than under Windows and the computer runs much colder.
