riodoro1 , to cat in What non-prescription food/treats do you give your cat with kidney issues?

Mine mostly eats wet food with „renal” on it. Five or six types so he doesn’t get bored (but he does anyway). The best thing I found was a „renal drink”. Sort of a soup which is mostly water, and that really boosted his liquid intake and how much he urinates. Since then his blood results really improved.

cheesymoonshadow OP ,
@cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world avatar

What is this drink? I’m planning to buy a few different things in my next Chewy order.

TheFriar , (edited )

I can actually give you some good guidance on this. If you have a more holistic/crunchy pet store in your area, one of the best diets you can give them is Answers frozen raw, with answers raw goats milk, and their fermented fish stock. If the kidney issues are far along, a mixture of 50% goats milk to 50% raw (beef, preferably), and their daily recommended of the fermented fish stock. That’s literally the highest quality diet you can give them.

For a less high quality (and thus cheaper) option, I would still recommend replacing part of their protein intake with answers raw goats milk, and definitely the fish stock if you can swing it. Even in less therapeutic doses, those are two great sources of probiotics to aid in digestion as well as adding more liquid to their diet, which is job #1. Job #2, though it’s really job #1.5, is the quality of the proteins they’re eating.

Weruva steak frites is the best canned food for kidney issues, because while keeping moisture high and protein quality high, it also has low phosphorous. Which is job #3. If steak frites is still out of your budget, their chicken frickazee is the second best option.

These are all canned or raw foods. I guess job #0.5 is to cease any and all dry food. If your cat is on dry food, stop immediately. No cat should be eating kibble, but definitely not a cat with kidney issues. Dry food will actually contribute to kidney issues, if not just straight up cause them. As well as tooth decay, obesity, dehydration, diabetes, and a host of other issues like coat quality. Cats a desert animals by nature, so they’re used to getting their moisture from their food. They also eat until they get the nutrients they need, and kibble is so much filler that they will overeat, their dehydration will get worse, and their kidneys will suffer. Especially the lower quality foods like science diet and royal canin.

So no matter what, no kibble from here on out. Be wary of any of the restricted diet stuff like science diet’s because it’s not a complete meal, it’s for maintenance for a flare up in these issues. I mean, avoid science diet altogether (and royal canin. Just saw the subtext of the post). Dave’s makes a good replacement for this, and it’s cheaper because it’s not “prescription,” you can just get it on chewy (or better yet, your local independent pet food store).

Your comment is super helpful. Thanks so much. I will definitely look into all of this stuff and see what’s available on Chewy. Murphy is already on wet-only, with only dry as a “treat” after giving his meds when unable to give it at mealtime.

riodoro1 ,

Its a kattovit product called renal drink. He kinda likes it too. I really think mine’s blood improved because he really started to drink more water. Now he’s peeing twice a day in contrast to once before. He is only 9 though.

Best health to you and your kitty.

light_fox , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

you can just dual boot linux next to Windows and switch to Windows when needed. I really like my linux fedora - way more than windows or macos.

What do i like about it?

  • it’s very easy to work with multiple virtual desktops
  • it looks way more beautiful and is more fun to work with
  • extentions make it very customizable, e.g. in the top left I can see the title and artist of the current song playing.
  • the feeling of of not being spied on, at least on the os level, I still think online is a lot of tracking
  • the apps are open source and trustable and do just what they are suppoesed to do and nothing more
    • there is an app to download youtube videos (parabolic)
    • the audio player is very beautiful and minimalistic - I miss it on windows (amberol)
    • the app solanum is a timer app just for the pomodoro time management method. It helped me a lot
    • for notes I use Joplin, which does the job reliable. But I have to admit that I liked working with OneNote more, since it has more functionality and way better pen support.

Regarding office was my experience that MS Office is still better if you have to make an presentation or want to work at the same document at the same time. For basic office work LibreOffice is fine. I would use OnlyOffice if you want better compatibility with MS Office.

I booted windows only if I had to do a presentation or work with an Windows exclusive programm. But most of the time (around 90-95%) I used happily Linux Fedora. I use it for note taking, listening to music, browsing the web and reading & marking PDFs.

I use Firefox as my primary browser but it has sometimes problems with some videos. Then I switch to Brave which does not have those issues. I general I think Linux needs some time to get used to and wants to be discoverd. It’s not that difficult as it may sound but probably wont be a without some learning curve and looking some things up online. I recommend doing it since my user experience has been much better than on windows or macos - plus the privacy thing :)

Do it again but do this first.

Make sure your new drive is recognized on your old setup. This makes sure the drive and controller is set up in the OS.

If it’s still problematic, look up “sysprep” and do that before shutting down and cloning.

If that doesn’t work, see if the new drive has a migration until provided by its OEM.

I just booted into the old drive and plug the new drive into using an nvme to usb c and it did not show up on disk management. However when I used an adapter to plug it in to the usb 2.0 and 3.0 inferfaces it showed up and I saw this: https://midwest.social/pictrs/image/40d71308-73a2-4da4-a03b-1b213da364ba.jpeg

note: Disk 2 is the new drive and Disk 1 is the original.

Brkdncr ,

Makes sense after cloning it that there would be issues with the new drive. I’d clone it again or better yet use the OEM’s migration utility.

numberfour002 , to asklemmy in Have you been stolen from?

Yes. They stole everything of value in my home, which sadly was not much, and they killed the family pets while doing it. No clue who did it, cops tend not to care much when this sort of thing happens to poor people, and they never tracked down who the culprits were. Definitely did affect me and yes I care.

cashmaggot OP ,

Aww man, fucking puking in my mouth here. I am so sorry. I worry about this. Right now, not living in the most cracked out area, but for sure have lived in some real sketch-pockets. We almost lost our little guys once (after a shit show drive by) and I always worry that we'll be out and some tweaker is going to fuck our lives up real bad by stealing all our shit (replaceable) and harming our pets (not-replaceable). Fuck whoever/whatever fucking thug-faced mother fuckers did this to you. I always call it the crab pot cause the low-end smashes up other people in the rough. Because like you said - the cops do not care, and they know they'll more than likely get away with it. And nobody talks about it, because at minimum it's the middle class folks in charge but more often than not the upper-class folks and that's not a world they tend to live in. Although I do think that both middle class folks and upper-class folks are starting to get hit more than ever before. But not like the rot that festers down in the lower-rungs. And worst yet, it doesn't give you some sort of Job-like resilience. It just smashes your heart to pieces, makes the struggle that much harder, and a lot of folks turn from it and start doing bad right back. Because how you gunna stay straight and narrow when you see how easily you can get away with being an absolute piece of shit.

I'm not saying you though. But I will say I have seen folks turn. And legitimately it breaks my heart. Because people don't even seem to know the game isn't for most people. And that the scarcity is forced. But also things. Like, people are fighting so hard for things, because the bullshit that capitalism taught us. But so much stuff is just extraneous. And like, at the end of the day doesn't really matter. But also poor people don't tend to travel, and tend to live their entire lives in set-spaces and (this is my opinion) but I think that can really fuck you up too. And media doesn't help, because so much of it is chatter and everything alive is trying to buy and sell you on some bullshit.

Eh. Big hugs, I got grumpy just thinking about it. I donno when this was but fuck them again and I hope you and yours found some way to feel safe. Even if it's grabbing a couple of pieces, putting cameras on every wall, glass around the perimeter, bars on the windows. Whatever. This is going to sound fucked up but if you're in a real shady ass space try not to talk with anyone especially the nicest of folks. And keep your windows COVERED and I mean covered - like if you gotta do it with sheets. Make sure if you walked up on them, nobody can see shit in your joint. And make a point of hopping out of your place fast, doing checks that everything is closed up prior, and just going from A-Z. Like I said - don't talk to anyone. It's not a great way to live, but if it's between you and surviving fuck that - just do what you've gotta do.

*p.s. - Stay safe =/!

ornery_chemist , to nostupidquestions in Do you agree with my unpopular opinion about height in rapier fencing?

Nah, reach is a huge advantage. I’m not sure how rapier fencing differs from regulation sabre/epée/foil, but here’s my 2 cents from that perspective:

Smaller people are not, as a rule, substantially quicker than larger. If you see any difference in your experience, it’s likely a selection bias (shorter people have to be quicker to compete at the same level). The shorter person must enter the strike range of the taller person before the taller person comes within theirs and must be significantly quicker or more skilled to overcome that dead space. If the taller person can maintain a proper distance, gg. Taller people can also lunge farther, giving a wider active range.

Targeting is a smaller issue than you make it out to be; footwork and maintaining balance, which reposition the core, are at least as important as leaning to dodge, and advantage the taller person (longer legs = more movement range). If the taller person is coming from above as you say, they can just continue their slash (sabre) downward toward that less mobile core, or squat a bit deeper if the arc won’t reach. If instead you were referring to a poke, they’re either already targeting the torso anyway (foil) or whatever body part is most easily reachable (epée; still often torso, but cheeky wrist/arm strikes can be something of an equalizer here), and anyway they are already striking at a range that the shorter person cannot, making a successful counterattack more difficult.

Besides reach, a height difference is brutal when it comes to sabre fencing; the shorter person is restricted to targeting arms and torso (can’t reach the head easily), so the taller person can anticipate strikes from fewer angles. The taller person can come from any direction and has gravity on their side for own overhead strikes. Those suck to defend against.

There’s lots of variables here including your expertise level with tech. I would suggest doing it again, sometimes clones don’t work and a second clone could.

Also I assume that that the new drive works with a fresh install (excluding intel RST shenanigans) and that you tested this?

Also when you go into automatic repair what options does it suggest? I’ve had many clone go weird and yet booting once in safe mode with just a reboot in safe mode fixes it.

Also if I might why Clonezilla rather than a windows aware cloner like Acronis? Also did you have both drives in the motherboard when you clone or were you using a USB adapter?
