Are there any “open” solutions to mesh networking that can compare to TP-Link Omada? I don’t think any open source hardware or software can come close, especially not for the newer Wi-Fi standards.

I haven’t bought them yet, but I’m seriously thinking about some Omadas. I imagine I can prevent them from phoning home, and the management software can run locally in a Docker container. Running it like that would be good enough for me even though they’re not “open.”

I’m planning a rework of my home Wi-Fi, and my current plan is an OPNsense box from Protectli, and a few EAP772’s:

If there’s something comparable/better that’s more of an open ecosystem, you definitely have my attention while I’m shopping around for different options.

Math formatting is a very small piece of what LaTeX does.

The common tool for managing citation in a LaTeX document is called BibTeX. You enter details about your sources, and BibTeX will create your bibliography and will also make it easier to cite things in your paper.

to clarify, this machine is way less impressive than what a lot of media claim it is. the greeks had hundreds of years of stargazing and records to figure out a model of the cosmos, and this is basically their whole model in a mechanism. unfortunately, at the time this thing was made, their model was pretty far off and they couldn’t come up with a better one due to philosophical reasons (the earth is the center! the orbits of the planets must be some sort of perfect circles!).

anyway, this thing is somewhat impressive technically, but is really bad in terms of engineering:

  • the teeth of the gears are triangular. there is a part of the mechanism that is super elaborate and calculates very precisely the motion of the moon and how it slows down and speeds up occasionally, but because of the triangular teeth, whether or not this actually worked is debatable.
  • the mechanism used crown gears, which are pretty bad because they don’t mesh well with the regular gears.
  • some of the gears are put under a lot of strain, particularly gear d1, a small gear that sits at the end of the gear chain b2 -> c1 -> c2 -> d1 (which gets faster and faster)
  • the mechanism has a lot of spacers soldered into place and rivets that were hammered in, making disassembly rather difficult. however some of the components are fastened in by pins.
  • the main gear b1 (the large one with the cross spokes you see in the picture) was built in a very weird way: the gear itself is a ring, and the spokes are added on later, connected to the ring with dovetail joints which aren’t the easiest thing to make when your level of tech is a file and some sandpaper. in fact, whoever made the mechanism probably screwed up one of the joints and had to rivet in an extra metal plate so it wouldn’t fall off.
  • the gear trains for the moon is built in a very weird way: first the main axis b drives 2 separate gear trains that pass through the main plate, only for one gear train to drive a turntable (e3 and e4) and the other to drive a shaft (e2 and e5) that goes through the center of the turntable. e5 will then drive a mechanism on the turntable which has an output shaft… that once again goes through the center of the turntable and the e2-e5 shaft (e1 and e6). then finally e1 drives b3, which drives a shaft that goes right through the center of the b axis. so now, you have 3 pairs of gears on the e axis whose shafts all go through each other like some matryoshka doll, as well as a hole right through the b axis to display the position of the moon.
  • the metonic and saros spirals on the back need resetting once in a while, because the pointers move in spirals and can’t automatically reset once they hit the end.

we knew that the greeks had a model of the cosmos before we discovered this (i think). we also knew, from greek records, that there were people discussing about “spheres” that tracked the positions of the planets, sun and moon as they moved through the sky. the main thing this mechanism shows is that the ancient greeks possibly pioneered complex gear mechanisms, and the knowledge was then passed on and on and went through times like the islamic golden age before coming back to europe in the form of clockwork and watchmaking.

Gacrux ,
@Gacrux@lemm.ee avatar

anthoer thing is that this machine clearly wasn’t the first draft. not only do we have those mentions of “spheres”, but there aren’t that many mistakes we see in the construction of the mechanism (apart from the dovetail joint). clearly the layout of the gears was planned beforehand, or they did trial-and-error with the gears on another version of the mechanism.

captain_aggravated ,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah Chris of youtube channel Clickspring has said during his replica build that there are features that suggest the maker was trying to make the mechanism more compact, like some gears that are friction fit on their axles rather than pinned to leave their tops flat, which suggests this wasn’t the maker’s first rodeo.

The thing that blows my mind the most about the Antikythera mechanism is that we don’t have anything else remotely like it in the archeological record from anywhere near the time it must have been made. You can imagine a simpler but still useful gear-based calendar device, maybe similar to this one but with fewer functions, being made before this. But no evidence of them survives to the modern day.

It would be like exploring a Civil War site and finding the corroded remains of an Apple Newton. While relatively primitive compared to later, more successful PDAs and smart phones, it’s still a surprisingly functional machine and way more sophisticated than you thought possible for the context you found it in that you wonder if it’s not significantly newer than its surroundings.

Gacrux ,
@Gacrux@lemm.ee avatar

that is true. the mechanism shows us that they definitely had some mechanism making culture going on. my point is that, despite how bizzare and sophisticated it sounds, this sort of thing was 100% doable for their level of tech, and that it is us who have misunderstood history. the hype surrounding it, making it sound like a supernatural creation and way more intelligent than it actually is, is bs.

If we ever get a house and senate progressive enough to shave like 0.000000001% of the military budget we could put one in every abandoned mall and have funds left over.

tunetardis ,

Yeah that sounds awesome!

I was just trying to say that once you privatize something like a mall to make it housing or whatever it is, you will never get it back. The city or some public trust should hold onto the property. What you actually do with it depends on what would be best for the community I guess?

Being a Canadian, just having some indoor places where you can gather in to get out of the cold in the dead of winter is something I don’t think we should give up.

Fair moderation. The biggest problem with the largest instances is that they are heavily skewed towards communist ideals and censorship, and mods will ban you for holding (locally) controversal opinions despite not breaking any rules. And sometimes the rules are too arbitrary and get used as a scapegoat to ban you for your opinion.

Programming.dev has been a very good example of how moderation should be done, but it is for programmers, thus may not be appealing to the typical user, and they end up on lemmy.ml instead and get banned because the mod was in a bad mood and didn’t like your opinion.

PhilipTheBucket OP ,

I saw that already. Programming.dev was right away on point about hiding some of my RSS bot’s posts, unless the users were subscribed, because it was spamming their users’ feeds and they didn’t want that. They’re clearly invested in their users having a good experience instead of, I guess, wanting to order them around? I’m not familiar but it looks like programming.dev is doing it right.

I agree. The moderation on Lemmy is halfway to Reddit’s. There are random rules for no reason. I don’t fully get it.

imaqtpie , (edited )

You make a valid point but I just want to push back a bit. These are the largest Lemmy instances in order of monthly users

large instances- lemmy.world -17.7k - lemm.ee - 3.2k - sh.itjust.works - 2.5k - lemmy.ml - 2.5k - hexbear- 1.8k - lemmy.ca - 1.3k - feddit.de - 1.2k - programming.dev - 1.1k - lemmy.dbzer0.com - 1.1k - lemmy.blahaj.zone - 900 - feddit.org - 900 - discuss.tchncs.de - 866

As far as I know, lemmy.ml and hexbear are the only heavily communist and censorship prone servers out of the top twelve. They were here first, but we really need to stop perpetuating the notion that they represent or dominate Lemmy as a whole, along with the idea that they represent a typical moderation experience on this platform.

I feel like the numerous well-moderated instances don’t get enough credit. The actions of lemmy.ml moderators tend to shape the narrative about Lemmy moderation, which is unfair to other servers and repels new users from the platform. Other instances aren’t perfect with moderation either, but at least they generally try to moderate in good faith and with some degree of neutrality, which is the most you can really ask for.

The primary influence that remains is lemmy.ml still hosts a disproportionate number of major communities, but that’s slowly changing.

parpol ,

Fair point. I said the biggest, but as you said, lemmy has been outgrowing the original instances. lemmy.ml hosting so many major communities is still a problem, but if that is slowly changing, I see a good future in Lemmy. OP seems decent so let’s hope it grows into a fine instance.

Piracy depends on what you’re pirating. TV/Movie wise you’ll be fine, as well as ROMs for the few emulators iOS has (relative to android). I doubt you’ll have any luck with apps or mobile games.

Like the other guy said, used/refurbished pixels are pretty good deals. The overheating is a bit overblown, yes some people get a bad device but you can just return it if it’s really bad. My experience with the pixel 7/ 7 pro is that it’s very smooth and don’t notice any overheating even in hot climate, and Android 14 and also the upcoming 15 updates helps with heat and battery significantly.

NeoNachtwaechter , to linux in backups for SD card disk image? that don't take up tonnes of space and can be rolled back?

I haven’t tried such a thing, but I remember ZFS has an option for block deduplication.

So you would set up a ZFS with block deduplication (and probably without compression - try this point out), and then you make your backup images with the dd tool and the correct block size.

Now you make always full copies and have them as normal files but they take only the disk space of the differences.

I would not say “wrong way”. I’s fun to think about such things and try them out.
