Man that whole situation really sucks. Reddit was by far my most visited site before they decided to light the house on fire. On mobile I always used Boost because the official app is terrible and (at least the last time I looked at it) would drain my battery like it was nothing even when the app was closed. RIP. At least we’ve got Lemmy. I just wish these 3rd party apps would take their users to the fediverse instead of shutting down entirely. As a developer it really sucks when you have to shut down a project you’ve put so much work into.

1337admin , to asklemmy in What is your boomer opinion

Sneaker culture is incredibly weird. Shoes made by children in China with a limited edition color are in such high demand that there are sites where people refresh F5 constantly hoping to have the honor to pay hundreds and hundreds for shoes that cost $7.50 to make. Then half of the time people won’t even wear them outside, they’ll put them in a bag and change shoes when they get to work or whatever. Or some might not even wear the shoes at all and just display them.

I’m an old soul in this sense. I love a quality goodyear welted shoe, and made in USA, UK, or Italy usually. An Allen Edmonds strandmok is a fantastic everyday shoe for me. I like to purchase nice things in general, use them, take care of them. I really hate throwaway culture as well.

Please nobody hate me for this, I’m a bit self conscious being an admin of my own instance and don’t want to piss people off haha. If you’re into gym shoe culture that’s awesome. If I knew you in real life I’d probably make fun of you for a minute if I saw you walking outside in socks carrying your $400 limited edition sneakers, but then you can make fun of me for one of the thousands of things I do and it’s all in good fun.

The idea is to try and offload the cost by driving users into other instances, as well as doing donation drives like how wikipedia or A03 do

also right as I typed this comment, a hilarious glitch happened where the upvoted shot up to like 370 lmao

Another Reddit refugee here: lemmy makes much more sense to my brain than mastodon ever did. So far, this has huge promise.

SmugBedBug ,

I felt kind of lost when looking for a Reddit alternative. Lemmy feels like the right alternative. It’s not perfect but it’s a better base than what we had with Reddit. I hope it picks up.

President_Pyrus ,
@President_Pyrus@feddit.dk avatar

Yeah, I like Lemmy’s organisation, but it lacks people. Now when Reddit is shitting om its users, I am hopeful that Lemmy will explode in user base soon.

caos ,

@President_Pyrus @SmugBedBug It is not necessary that everyone who uses has to be a Lemmy user. Thanks to the , everyone from Mastodon, Misskey, etc. can also participate in Lemmy content (also post in communities, just don't create your own communities). For example, I am currently replying from Friendica. The circle of people is much, much larger, so it's not a problem if Lemmy lacks people.

Regata OS is a gaming oriented customization of Opensuse Tumbleweed. I’ve been using it for a year without issues.

SamC , to fediverse in I like this significantly better than Mastodon

I’ve been thinking that it is probably easier to move a community from a platform like Reddit to the Fediverse than it is from Twitter. I have used both Twitter and Reddit a lot, but have moved off Twitter and now use Mastodon. Mastodon works pretty well for me, but it’s taken a lot of work to get there, and there are parts of the communities (mostly related to my work) I want to connect with that just don’t exist on Mastodon.

But the big difference between Reddit/Lemmy and Twitter/Mastodon is that on Reddit/Lemmy I am interested in communities for topics that are mostly hobbies/entertainment etc. for me, so I don’t really care about who I’m interacting with… I can’t really name more than a handful of regular users or mods on the Reddit subs I’ve been using for more than a decade. But it’s not really important for interacting there, because it’s about interacting with people who have an interest in a particular topic no matter who they are. On Twitter/Mastodon (at least how I use it), the specific people I’m interacting with are more important.

So it seems the “lock in” of Reddit is weaker than Twitter, and I think it’ll be quicker to establish communities here. A community on Lemmy with a few hundred people contributing (posts/comments) is already pretty successful and enjoyable. It doesn’t matter that the equivalent community on Reddit has over a million people (and in fact it’s often better if it’s smaller!).

That weaker lock in and the fact that Reddit seems to be massively undervaluing the contribution mods and third-party app devs make to the platform make me think Reddit is going to quickly regret this whole fiasco.

fallendusk , to linux_gaming in Is PopOS the best for easy gaming?

endeavourOS! It’s pretty much Archlinux with a gui installer and some helpful things for new users. I recently installed it on a spare drive on my gaming PC with AMD/nvidia and everything just worked after installing steam.

hellerphant OP ,

I will have to check this on out too! Thank you.

evadzs ,

If you’re newer to Linux I recommend Garuda as a beginner distro. It’s very similar to Endeavor as an Arch base, but has some friendly GUI options like Snapper bootable backups for easily undoing bad updates and an update script that takes care of mirror list and orphan notifications. People complain about bloat in Garuda and while there is some it’s also helpful bloat, still less than Windows, and has negligible impact on modern hardware

Looks like the Chinese “investor” is the Communist Party. The actions Reddit is taking are pretty much how they take down all the companies and citizens they target.

Looks like the Chinese “investor” is the Communist Party.

can we get a citation on this–preferably before asserting it as fact, please? i’d like it if, on this site, we didn’t just say things (especially if they sound in line with our priors) but actually substantiate them.

MasterBlaster ,

Not fact. It’s my opinion based on the actions I see, and the fact things started to go down hill after the investors gave money. One of the big ones was Chinese.

We’ve seen how things go down when China is involved - loans to poor nations, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the disputed islands with Japan, Tibet, the Urghurs.

We’ve seen the various iterations of the “oops how did that key logger get in there?” discoveries (Lenovo, i’m looking at you), corporate espionage, Huawei telecommunications infrastructure being used to tap communicatons, etc…

Strict control of pretty much everything is the pattern, in which disinformation is easily dispensed and difficult to identify.

I swear tankies and liberals are basically the same. Tankies blame the CIA for every single bad thing that has ever happened while liberals blame the CCP and the Russian government. while i’ll wait for the source i asked for and gladly correct this if i’m presuming incorrectly, i’d bet the odds are high that “CCP” is just being used as a shorthand/stand-in for a company like TenCent, because that happens a lot in discussions about China and it’s really goofy.

FistfulOfBottlecaps ,

In the interest of fairness, isn’t the difference between TenCent and the Chinese government basically just paperwork? I’ve always heard (anecdotally) that they work extremely close with the CCP.

i don’t know if i’d go that far? with Tencent specifically it is inarguable they have worked with the Chinese government on some things and that’s not nothing. but Tencent is still an independent company, and governments and corporations/their shareholders frequently don’t have the same interests at heart, so it’s hard to say where to draw the line here.

i think my position would be: i don’t think it’s useful to assert everything they do is intended to advance what China wants, especially in the absence of anything indicating that. i also don’t know how useful it is to assume they’re just a front for China–certainly i don’t think that the people most vocal about this consistently apply that concern to other countries like Saudi Arabia who use companies to advance their state interests all the time.

conversely, i think it’s ridiculous to confidently assert Tencent have never, or don’t ever, get influenced by interests China has, or that Chinese state officials aren’t capable at least theoretically of using the company to advance state interests. that stuff happens here, where ostensibly our system exists to prevent that kind of collaboration (this is basically what the “military-industrial complex” is, for example).

argv_minus_one ,

There’s no need to hypothesize about a shadowy government conspiracy when the situation is adequately explained by simple desperation for money. Spez outright said that Reddit is losing money and has always been losing money, and that he needs to make it stop losing money, presumably because Reddit’s investors are tired of giving him money and want to see some return on their investment.

raresbears , to fediverse in I like this significantly better than Mastodon

Strongly agree. Mastodon is alright and I use it a little, but the twitter-type format never really worked for me. I feel like when I have to follow individual people I usually end up either following no one or being forced to follow people who post things that interest me sometimes but a lot of the time post things that really don’t. Following particular topics or threads just seems much more natural to me; I can look at exactly what interests me and nothing more.

TheDude , to asklemmy in What is your boomer opinion

It was totally uncool to remove the headphone jack from my device, man.

XPost3000 , to fediverse in I like this significantly better than Mastodon

Yeah same here, Reddit is my mindless scrolling app of choice, not Twitter, so when I tried to use Mastodon I just kinda stood there not knowing what to do

I love being able to read and immerse myself is specific communities and whatnot, and specifically I love Reddit for the discourse, people posting in a community, replying to posts, and replaying to those replies, and so on

So Lemmy has just become my jam, so happy that Reddit has an open source federated alternative now, even if they reverse their API debacle I’m still gonna keep using this app

SpacePirate , to technology in Can you code? We need your help to improve lemmy

Likely need to define some basic rbac controls. They signed up, sure, but don’t receive a “user” role until after approval. Then in the home page, when signed in with no roles assigned, they get a banner saying they’re still pending approval and will not be able to post or comment.

The major concern will be retroactively applying user roles to the existing users.
