Is there a guide on how to upload on Usenet ? Maybe I’m just being silly. … Or am I 🤔

takeda , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: In computer networking, what is a port?

If you would compare a server to a building, with its own street address, then port would be an apartment number for every application (tenant) living there.

Ports are what allowing you to run multiple applications and all can communicate over the internet. Without ports you would need to have a dedicated computer for every application.

loopy , to nostupidquestions in What are the pros and cons of selling plasma?
@loopy@vlemmy.net avatar

So I worked at a plasma donation center and in a hospital. I will tell you that the training at the donation place I was at was very brief and you are somewhat practice for many new phlebotomists. I will also say I cared for at least two patients that were hospitalized after people missed their sticks at the donation centers and the patients had infections, pain, and huge vascular issues after that.

That being said many people do it and it turns out just fine. It’s easy money if you can tolerate it. But I would not recommend it, as it can eventually cause scarring to your veins and it may be difficult to start an IV when you are older and actually really need that access site.

In terms of people who didn't fully understand the fediverse, there are two kinds of people:

  • those who want to fully get their head around it first so they can make optimal decisions
  • those who are happy to just jump in and learn by doing

It looks like Polywork might be what you are looking for. The early adopters are, as you can imagine, very tech orientated but that is changing as the numbers grow.

CIWS-30 , to nostupidquestions in Why do we call ourselves lemmings when lemmons is such a better name?

Because lemmings are cute. Lemons are just something you squeeze the juice out of to make lemonade or just lemon water to clean your liver.

collegefurtrader , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: If you're a Christian, why do you have to be good if Jesus will forgive you no matter what?

IIRC the trick is to get your forgiveness after the last dick move, but before you die. If you mess up the timing, eternal damnation so it’s safer to be good.

andyMFK , to nostupidquestions in What companies are “woke” this week?

Companies want your money and nothing else. Any wokeness you are perceiving is a strategy to make the most money out of their customer base.

Companies pandering to “wokeness” have done the math and figure more of their customers support it than not. This isn’t really wokeness, it’s pandering.
