It would be fine if it kept to system init rather than growing like a cancerous tumor.

This is great! I have bounced off of TOS a few times, having thought that I was supposed to watch in “production order”. I recently started TNG and have been loving it. I can highly recommend the “Start with TNG” order for newcomers like myself.

It’s surprising to me though that it was ever considered family friendly considering what a horndog Riker is (and also just everything to do with Lwaxana Troi 😂)

archiotterpup , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: If you're a Christian, why do you have to be good if Jesus will forgive you no matter what?

That’s the fun part! It depends on which branch of Christianity you believe in. Some think it’s only faith, some the baptism/saved, and some good works.

  1. Is the current SystemD rant derived from years ago (while they’ve improved a lot)?

No it’s almost always been derived from people’s behinds.

  1. Should Linux community rant about bigger problems such as Wayland related things not ready for current needs of normies?

Yes.

Systemd is spectacular in many ways. Every modern OS has a process management system that can handle dependencies, schedule, manage restarts via policy and a lot more. Systemd is pretty sophisticated on that front. I’ve been able to get it to manage countless services in many environments with great success and few lines of code.

HunterBidensLapDog , to android in How does everyone feel about Oneplus phones?
@HunterBidensLapDog@infosec.pub avatar

I appreciate they have unlocked bootloaders. Now that I’m comfortable upgrading my old phones with the latest Android and security updates I’ll never buy another phone that doesn’t let me unlock the bootloader like Samsung. It’s why I replaced my Note.

eeltech , to nostupidquestions in Is there a point in having multiple lemmy accounts?

only reason I made several is to "claim" my username on different lemmy instances. I'm hoping at some point I can merge or link them somehow

WhoRoger , to nostupidquestions in Is there a point in having multiple lemmy accounts?
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

You can access almost everything, but some instances are either defederated, or federation may be unreliable at times. You may also wish to create communities on another instance for whatever reason. For now, you're prolly fine and then you'll see.

directive0 , to retrogaming in Which obscure systems have you played on?
@directive0@lemmy.world avatar

Before it closed, the Brantford Computer museum here in Ontario had an amazing collection of machines. My wife took my friends and I there for my birthday one year and oh man what a trip. They had everything on display, from common systems like the c64 to really rare ones like the Unisys Icon. All up and booted, ready to be played with. But despite all these ultra rare systems the one that caught my eye was the Apple Pippin.

I grew up an insufferable mac fanboy (now reformed and agnostic), and as a kid I had heard tons about the pippin, but it was so obscure and terrible that I was sure I would never get to play one IRL.

But there I was, smile on my face, playing Super Marathon on that crappy pippin. I had the time of my life that day.

Thanks for everything Syd. RIP dude.

rosa666parks , to gaming in What's achievement in videogames are you most proud of?

“Elden Ring” achievement in Elden Ring (obtain all achievements.) I am a very casual gamer and I played very little of dark souls 3 but I couldn’t get past the tutorial boss so I gave up. I heard many great thing about Elden Ring so I decided to give a FromSoft game another try. The freedom of that game made it really easy for a casual player like myself to go my own pace and get used to the i-frames. I fell in love with the game and my first play through I used as many summons as I could but my other play throughs I hardly used any. It turned me into a gamer that dodged and used parries which I never did before. Very good game and I’m excited to play the dlc.

You didn’t mention System Shock, so maybe System Shock.

It was originally released in 1994 but a remake was just recently released and has had favorable feedback. Deus Ex, BioShock and Prey are spiritual successors.
