HobbitFoot , to technology in X walks back its misgendering policy after right-wing complaints

So this means you can misgender them back, right?

Silentiea ,

They will laugh and think it’s funny because they don’t get why it bothers people. They’ll insist that the only reason what you’re doing is wrong would be if you were “reinforcing a lie” or some other bull shit.

androogee ,

Nah cis people absolutely do understand why misgendering sucks.

There’s a reason it was a running bit on Scrubs for like 9 seasons or whatever.

Right wingers just always gonna lie to defend their point. More natural than breathing for them.

Silentiea ,

The thing is, they don’t. Because no one ever put Elliot in the position of literally being told by everyone around her that she was a man, no one ever told her she was delusional and should find a counsellor to investigate whatever trauma might have caused her to have these incorrect beliefs about herself that let her think she’s a woman when she’s clearly not.

The people complaining don’t understand because they think it’s at worst as bad as JD saying Elliot has an Adam’s apple, and they don’t or won’t confront the fact that that’snot what they’re doing to trans people. And yeah, those jokes were stupid and transphobic and unnecessary, but even then the whole joke is that it’s funny she gets upset about it because no one could ever seriously confuse her gender. People can always tell. Right?

They don’t understand, and they refuse to consider ideas that would let them, and that’s pretty fucking shitty. But honestly? If I could just chalk it up to malice, life would be a lot easier.

tigeruppercut ,

I think they were talking about JD and Cox with all the girls names

Silentiea ,

That makes sense, but a lot of the same points apply. No one thought J.D. was a girl or told him he was delusional for believing he wasn’t. I do get that it was obviously meant to be demeaning there, but almost certainly not for a “you aren’t who you think you are” way, but rather “girls are silly and you’re silly so you’re a girl” way. Casual misogyny: not really better than casual transphobia, but still a separate thing.

The distress JD feels when belittled thusly isn’t because someone really believes he is wrong and bad for thinking he’s a man, but because Cox doesn’t respect him as a doctor and has the erroneous belief that calling him a woman’s name conveys that somehow.

Don’t do this. Misgendering cis people merely makes it seem acceptable to use misgendering as a weapon in general. I understand the inclination to try and make people understand what it is like… But if they have never doubted your gender, they will not understand.

@TheHottub@lemmy.world avatar

Why does the article have to say “Obama-era”? Net neutrality is just net neutral and we don’t need to add extra labels to create a headline. Annoying.

ImFresh3x ,

Because we had net neutrality under Obama. And there’s lots of people who don’t know that. I’ve seen numerous posts back on Reddit and recently on lemmy saying corporate dems will never enact NN. When they did, and they are again. I’m glad the article mentions it. Because those history revisionists “both sides” groups are loud and prominent.

ImFresh3x ,

We do need to add to the polarity. 100%. Dems are not like republicans. And republicans are not like dems. It needs to be pointed out and made clear.

You can torrent without portforwarding. The only issue is on rare Linux isos. You potentially will have trouble discovering new peers. At least one person will need portforwarding.

It’s more that effective seeding is very hard without a forwarded port. If you only leech, you’ll be fine. But that’s not how the system is envisioned.

I was looking at Proton too but I’m already a customer and the VPN is going to be shared with family members. I worries if they can access my mail if I share my account.

It would help if Tor would be more useful for regular use. The few times I used it, it was for VPN-style geolocation circumvention. Tor supports it by changing ExitNodes, but the setting is hidden deep down in a config file and required a restart. Not exactly a great user experience for a setting that you might wanna flip pretty frequently.

    refurbishedrefurbisher ,

It’s a hidden setting because it’s not recommended to change that setting for people who need anonymity.

It provides anonymity in much the same sense as going into the bank while wearing a skimask does. Every form of anonymity service always puts you in close range to be grabbed by the authorities, as while your traffic might be anonymized, the fact that you are running the service is not.

lol, imaging wanting to spending that much money to get a really shitty output. Just pay the writers and actors you cheapskates

    Amazed , (edited )

I think it’s about money and control. Slavery is a far more lucrative framework to a shortsighted business model that doesn’t value human life or input in the least beyond what it can earn. Think about exploiting a machine for unlimited gains vs waiting for people to work through a creative process, or rewrites. No breaks for hundreds or thousands. No day limits.

Then think about the people in power being able to implement their own (stupid) visions without any pushback or challenge. Want to incorporate your advertisers, backers or political agendas? Want to change your mind after you release? Responding instantly to testing? Boom. No creative pushback. No talent pushback or wrangling.

And they own it all outright if it came from their platform. Near total “self sufficiency”. There are so many stories about great movies or films that almost didn’t happen because one or several out of touch producers, or bean counters from accounting, almost ruined everything. (Thinking about “The Offer”, or more recently The Algorithm on “Barry”)

Eventually, maybe it could mean fewer unions to negotiate with if studios own both likenesses and writing process, or less bargaining power for the existing unions. They already own your face, or can compose “original” amalgams.

Much can be accomplished on a set / lot with computers as it is. Factor in non union performance, or weaker unions, and I bet they think they’ll print money. I am thinking like late career-Bruce Willis where it’s quantity over quality (before he announced his illness, he squeezed a few more millions out of his name and face doing a scene or two in a series of very low budget films). This would matter to many who care about quality, and ethics, however, look at network drama or procedurals like L&O. People in general can be far less discerning as long as it’s not too bad. In fact, they often prefer formula and tropes are tropes for a reason. Sometimes formulae are overt and sometimes it’s more subtle.

Is that all possible under current law? Do antitrust or monopoly laws cover this? I don’t know. I think pressure could shape laws as usual.

Just a thought experiment from a former entertainment professional. I side with unions of course against the executives and shadowy funders that make the millions behind the scenes. But take all with a grain of salt.

Edit: now I’m thinking about how cost and investment there is over a life to train people to achieve the necessary competence and ability (like any job, or any soldier), and how they could bypass some, or eventually all of that, knee capping human arts and culture. And to some degree literacy. We don’t belong in museums yet… Dang it >:(
