It works in Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 for me. Haven’t tried anything else.

Yeah there are like 5 monitors with full array local dimming, most being $500+ except for that one AOC. And OLEDs are still $700+ and have burn-in after a year of desktop use.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Yep I don’t even play that many games but I watch a lot of movies/TV. HDR works great in mpv. Couple of tweaks in your mpv.conf and you’re off to the races.

ayaya , (edited )
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Yes it’s an exaggeration but it’s not far off. The one for $290 is the aforementioned AOC.

This isn’t a perfect list but pcpartpicker only has 15 monitors with HDR1000 or higher with one being a duplicate so it’s actually 14. If you remove the HDR filters there’s 773 monitors.

That means only 14 out of 773 monitors support HDR properly. And that doesn’t even mean they’re good, just that they support it.

And oops I should have specified 27 inches or under, that is my bad. 27 inches is what I was shopping for recently. Personally I actually prefer 24 inches but they pretty much stopped making good 24 inch ones.

I work from home and never call anyone so on Tello I pay $6/mo for 100 minutes + 1GB of data that pretty much functions as a 2FA delivery system.

I have actually been seeing some timestamps that are completely wrong lately, maybe this is why.

I also use the Jellyfin+Symfonium combo. There is also Finamp as the free and open source option. And Feishin on desktop.

And HDR has been working for me for over 6 months with Plasma 6. I wish people wouldn’t upvote this stuff that gives the wrong idea.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

I don’t know when the last time you used Wayland was but in Plasma 6 I wouldn’t say it “breaks other things.” Before Plasma 6 I had plenty of problems and stuck on X11 but now it’s great. So give it another try if you haven’t recently. Every issue I used to have with it a year ago is gone.

As for the obscure parameters, as of Plasma 6.1 all you have to do for games is add gamescope --hdr-enabled to the launch options for the necessary games. I don’t think that’s particularly difficult or obscure. You can also set up Steam itself to run in gamescope with --hdr-enabled and then every game will have it.

For HDR movies/TV/YouTube you can copy/paste the necessary options into your mpv.conf and then forget about it. It’s a one-time thing and then it works forever.

The biggest place HDR is missing is in Firefox, but Firefox doesn’t have HDR on Windows either so that’s not a Linux thing that’s a Firefox thing.

In my opinion, HDR on the desktop isn’t really there yet in general. Not just on Linux but on computers as a whole. HDR right now is really only for enthusiasts. The only monitors that properly support HDR1000 are $500+ for the entry level ones and $800+ for the decent ones. And you have to choose between miniLED with local dimming that don’t have enough zones yet or OLEDs that get burn-in after a year.

ayaya , (edited )
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

I also tried running a game in game scope with HDR enabled, experimenting with options and env cars I found online, but it just didn’t work.

To be fair I don’t play a lot of games so I have only used HDR in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring but it worked perfectly in both so I am 2 for 2.

An extra annoyance is the fact that the LDR colors are quite off with HDR enabled on Plasma. I suspect this is the fault of the display or configuration, but it’s still something I’d have to spend time researching and fixing, only to barely get any use out of it.

Plasma is supposed to be able to display SDR content correctly while HDR is enabled (which Windows 10 can’t even do) but I can’t actually test that properly because my monitor doesn’t allow you to disable local dimming while in HDR mode so desktop stuff is completely unusable anyway. But if it doesn’t look right it is probably something you can fix in your monitor’s OSD.

I actually suspect the colors are correct and your normal colors are the incorrect ones. If your monitor has a wider gamut than sRGB you need to either A) set it to sRGB mode or B) use a calibrated ICC profile. If you aren’t doing one of those then all of your colors are oversaturated. When you switch into HDR they are correct but it looks dull in comparison because you’re used to them being wrong. It’s a pretty common thing people experience on Windows as well. Not a lot of people realize their colors are horribly inaccurate by default.

Also, most people only turn HDR on when it’s needed. You can add a keybind for it in Plasma’s shortcut settings. The commands are kscreen-doctor output.1.hdr.enable and kscreen-doctor output.1.hdr.disable. You may need to change the output number to the correct one.

I haven’t tried setting up steam itself in gamescope, but wouldn’t it be limited to one window then?

Yep. I don’t like it honestly. It’s just an option if you want to set it up once rather than on a per-game basis.

but I feel like there’s a lot of people who will just pay up for a good screen that includes HDR

That’s the thing, even if you pay up there aren’t actually any “good” HDR monitors. At least not in the same way as there are good HDR TVs. That’s why some people use 48 inch TVs as monitors instead of actual monitors. There’s a few monitors that are “good enough” but I wouldn’t call any of them “good” right now. I am one of those people who considers anything below HDR1000 to not be real HDR. If you look at the rtings.com monitor table, out of 317 monitors they’ve reviewed only TWO of them actually hit the 1000 nits of real scene brightness needed for HDR1000. And both are miniLED with local dimming which have haloing and blooming because there’s not enough dimming zones.

I have a feeling that by the time genuinely “good” HDR monitors exist (maybe 2-3 more years) that will be enough time for Linux programs to seamlessly support it instead of requiring launch arguments.

ayaya , (edited )
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Oh if you have it set to sRGB mode then they should be accurate enough. That means it’s something else. My previous monitor also had a green tint in HDR and that was just because that monitor’s HDR was awful. If you want to check if it’s the monitor itself, you could try it with Windows or attach a Roku/Chromecast/Firestick type device that can output HDR. If it’s still green it’s the monitor’s fault and if it looks fine then it’s Plasma’s fault.

And yeah plenty of monitors have “some HDR support” it’s just not real HDR unless it gets bright enough (and dark enough). The whole point of having a High Dynamic Range is that the range is well… high. Black should be black and extremely bright things should be extremely bright. A lot of monitors advertise “HDR400” or “HDR600” but don’t have local dimming and only go to like 450 nits. At that level it’s barely going to look different from SDR which a lot of people run at 300-400 nits anyway. The overall range of brightness is around 0.2-450 when it should be 0-1000. That 0.2 doesn’t seem like a lot but if you’ve ever seen a completely black image in a dark room you know how not-black that is. Which is why OLED and local dimming are so important for HDR.

Don’t forget the AUR. It’s so much easier to use yay than it is to go to GitHub to manually check for updates/download/install a deb or rpm file.

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google’s avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant’s attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory’s new software...

Same story for me on a OnePlus 5T which is the even older Snapdragon 835. Firefox is genuinely unusable. I tried Mull and Iceraven too. For several months I tried to put up with it, but they were all a slow and buggy mess. Switched to Brave and it works fine.

I use Librewolf on my desktop for the record.

It is genuinely amazing, there’s a reason us Arch users never shut up about it. The setup/configuration in the beginning will seem daunting but once you have everything the way you want it is a smooth and enjoyable experience.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

If that’s the case it should be a much easier transition. I also came from Ubuntu originally.

You will notice the difference right away. Everything is always up to date so you’re not waiting half a year for updates and there’s no big upgrade transitions between major versions. And pacman is a lot faster than apt in general.

Plus with the AUR you’ll never touch another PPA again. Almost anything you could possibly want is in there, even some of the most obscure/specific things.

I do recommend doing everything from scratch if you have the time, but if not EndeavourOS is literally just preconfigured Arch (and I do mean literally, it uses the same repos) so that’s also a solid option.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

It brings nothing new to the mix until you want something that’s up to date or something that’s not in the main repos and now you have to track down a PPA or manually install a deb file and keep it updated yourself instead of being able to use the package manager.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

You are forgetting that you have to pay to play online. Your $500 console is an $800 console if you use it for 5 years. You can build a roughly PS5 equivalent PC (RX 6700) for more like $650-700 which is less overall.

Plus it’s a computer so you can also use it for normal computer things, and the games themselves are generally much cheaper with a huge backlog and sales all the time.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

That’s my experience as well. Now I use a SearXNG instance with Google as the only source and it works well I’d say roughly 97% of the time.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

I definitely got stuck on their levels in Megaman as a kid.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah it can certainly cause problems, it’s just not ADHD.

ADHD doesn’t even really mean short attention spans, it’s more of the inability to willingly direct attention. It’s the same way people incorrectly use “OCD” to mean liking things clean and/or orderly.

I have ADHD and I’ve had times where I’ve done the same thing for 14 hours straight (even forgetting to eat) when my brain decides it wants to latch onto that thing. You just need to be sufficiently stimulated, hence why stimulants can work as a treatment.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

BG3 was/is also filled to the brim with bugs. Look at the dozens of patches that have come out. It released blatantly unfinished.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Exactly. If all you want to do is torrent then it’s by far the best option. $2.22/mo ($80 for 3 years) which is less than half the price of anything else, has portforwarding, and with wireguard I can saturate a full gigabit no problem on private trackers.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

I’m in the same boat. People who had loving parents will never understand this. While I’m sure some exist, the vast majority of people are not going to put in the twice as much effort to date someone who’s been deprived of affection their entire life. There is zero reason to go for that over a normal, healthy, emotionally secure person.

ayaya , (edited )
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

So following your argument further, if we all did this no one would produce anything because they’d never get paid.

You are literally saying this on Lemmy. A piece of software that is developed for free using other software/tools that are free, and run on servers that are hosted by others for free. Most open source projects work this way. People are fully capable of doing things because they want to. Not everything needs to be profit-driven.

If we all did this, what would happen is there would be way less slop and lazy cash-grabs. Because the only people left making things would be the ones who are actually passionate and believe in what they do.

if you need some OpenCL improvements

As far as I can tell mesa and the proprietary drivers both use the ROCm packages for OpenCL. I don’t think there’s actually a difference on that front.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah I had to double check as well. It actually does elaborate.

“AMDGPU PRO OpenCL - used because Mesa OpenCL is not fully complete. Proprietary component only for Polaris GPUs. The onward GPUs use the open ROCm OpenCL.”

So for anything newer than the RX 500 series (anything after 2017) it doesn’t matter for OpenCL it seems.

From what I can gather the OpenCL stack used to be proprietary, but they decided to open source it when ROCm came along. So the Pro driver used to be more important and now it’s really only necessary for AMF since the Vulkan and OpenGL portions are straight up worse than mesa.

Especially for hard drives. 8TB SAS drives are down to about $45 a piece.

Brand new enterprise-grade 8TB drives are more around $180 new. Meaning as long as you have redundancy (which you should anyway) then you can lose four used drives before it stops being worth it. Not to mention drives get cheaper so if your $45 drive dies 2 years from now you could probably replace it for $35 etc.

ayaya , (edited )
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

Just buy them on eBay. Why does it matter where they come from? Again, four of them have to die before it’s no longer worth it. It’s extremely unlikely you’d be that unlucky.

Personally I have 15 drives in my NAS, all of them were bought used and they’ve been running 24/7 for 4+ years without issue. Originally I expected to lose at least one per year but they just keep chugging along. All of them have at least 40k power on hours, with the oldest 3TB ones having over 80k (9+ years)

I use unRAID so if/when one does die it’s as simple as pulling out the dead one, popping in a new one, and letting it rebuild itself.

In Arch there are AUR packages for specific versions so you don’t have to do it yourself. Arch is about picking and choosing your packages, but not really about actually building/patching things on your own like LFS or Gentoo.

Although picking a rolling-release distro and then using an outdated kernel does seem counter-intuitive.

Fun fact, if you want to bypass the hearts system you can go to Duolingo For Schools and create a classroom with only yourself in it. There is zero verification.

For me Firefox crashes all the time in normal use. I am talking minimum twice a day. It also has this weird problem where it will pin one thread to 100% and lock up the whole browser when downloading files. I also had to disable video hardware acceleration or else Twitch crashes every 5-10 minutes but luckily my CPU is so strong that it’s not too big of a deal to do software decoding.

I still use it out of principle but it has been a way worse experience than Chromium ever was for me.

ayaya ,
@ayaya@lemdro.id avatar

I am talking about on desktop but actually the Android version of Firefox was such a laggy buggy mess I switched to Brave on mobile.

On my desktop I use Arch btw with a 7950X and a 6900 XT. Honestly after using it for over a year I kind of hate it. I am so fed up with how many small annoying problems it has. Someone else mentioned Thorium in this thread and I might give that a try.

If Firefox works great for you that’s awesome but it is BY FAR the buggiest piece of software on my entire computer.

Weird. I’ve had a Pi-Hole + Unbound running on a Pi Zero since 2018 and it’s never had any issues. I expected the Zero to kinda suck but it has been nothing but smooth sailing. It gets USB power from my router and even if my router reboots the Pi also auto reboots itself.

I do next to no maintenance on it and it just keeps on chugging along. Maybe once every six months or so I SSH in and do a pihole -up and that’s it.

Do you think Rockstar is omniscient?

Seriously. There is actually zero way Rockstar would ever know even if you outright stole some of the code unless you were to admit it. And definitely not if you got some inspiration from it.

The derivative code will get compiled. What are they going to do, pick apart the machine code from every game released from now on to see if it somehow matches a chunk from GTA? And then somehow track down and prove that one of the probably dozens of employees who worked on the game looked at this leaked source code? Good luck with that.

For me I have to change SDR Color Intensity to 100% for the colors to be close to SDR. Although because you can’t use ICC profiles with HDR and my monitor is wide gamut the colors are wrong.
