The order declares that, in matters of the state, the “biological differences between the sexes are enduring” and that the “sex” of a person will be defined by the gender designated at birth.

That makes zero fucking sense

Wogi ,

This means that insecure men in Nebraska can now go in to the dive bar they get drunk at starting at 1030 AM, and hit on any woman in the place without fear of her secretly having a penis.

Not that there are any women in that bar, that they’d ever have a chance at taking one home, or, that this executive order actually means any of that. But the idiots who support this kind of thing will think it does.

Wogi ,

I got it. I have a perfect solution. The perfect definition to solve all debate.

Man is a featherless bird.

Wogi ,
Drivebyhaiku ,

You are thinking of sex. Gender comes from the same root as genre - like how you categorize books. It was initially used to define things loosely by cultural traits like “tribe” or “type” and was used in the 15 century to describe men and women in a tongue in cheek way. Basically saying “the tribe of woman” right before trying to be witty about how women don’t make any sense because they are like another culture. Other uses would have been to distinguish differences between any different nations, families, groups. So your gendre could have been “English” or “From this specific village where they eat a lot of cheese” or of a social class.

The word got hijacked by Victorian sensibilities which used it euphemistically in that “tribe of” way for the word sex because having a woman saying the word sex aloud to a room in the scientific sense of the word caused monocles to shoot out of men’s eyesockets at lethal speeds and early feminists needed language they could use without being censored… But the modern usage of gender is not a euphemism for sex. They are two distinct words.

Gender does not concern itself with any part of the person’s body. It refers more to classification by cultural attributes. Like how you would decide if a book belongs in the mystery section or romance. Whether the book is hard or soft cover is not relevant to genre classification in the same way male /female/intersex is largely irrelevant in regards to gender classification.

Blamemeta ,

Im not disagreeing with you? Sex is the physical body, xx/xy/others, gender is the societal/mental.

    A lot of Christians have a pretty vague understanding of the bible, or the religion as a whole, usually jusy what will let them justify whatever they need to be justified.

    This should be expected, to be fair, since Christianity is a cultural inheritance. You’re not expected to know much about it other than what your priest tells you, if the Christian even goes to church to begin with.

    Terevos ,
    @Terevos@lemm.ee avatar

    As an actual Christian that reads the Bible and goes to church, I wish more people who called themselves Christian actually followed what the Bible says. It’s a big problem in the US

    Sotuanduso ,

    Yeah, if you don’t read the Bible or go to church, it’s almost impossible for you to actually be a Christian.

    But for some reason what counts as a Christian is determined by what you choose to call yourself instead of what our holy text says.

    hume_lemmy ,

    Some aren’t just ignorant of the Bible… they’re actively rejecting its teachings.

    Seudo ,

    Reading the bible is the leading cause of atheism.

    orphiebaby ,

    Patently false. Most atheists have read the bible as much as most “Christians”. Some of the most-common “causes” of atheism are: never was pushed/encouraged to believe, skeptic/scrutinizing personality, or being annoyed by what “Christians” say or do. All of these reasons and more for being an atheist are good and valid-- I’m just arguing against this bad-faith (no pun intended) crap that you are arguing, and that some other atheists say.

    squiblet ,
    @squiblet@kbin.social avatar

    I feel like you misinterpreted the comment you are replying to.

    orphiebaby ,

    What did you think the implication was?

    squiblet ,
    @squiblet@kbin.social avatar

    That some people read the Bible and say “wtf is this nonsense?” and then question how anyone could base a religion on that.

    orphiebaby ,

    Yeah, that’s what I thought it was too. I’m just saying that “some people” aren’t “most people who become atheists”.

    squiblet ,
    @squiblet@kbin.social avatar

    I'd agree that it's not a leading cause. To your list though I'd add that some people are pushed too hard to be believers, and reject it, or grew up in an area where people are just flat-out obsessed with religion and it ends up putting their hypocrisy in view.

    orphiebaby ,

    Depending on your point of view, those could be partially or fully extensions of my list points; but yeah, there are plenty of good reasons to be an atheist. I myself am an ex-Christian agnostic theist. My churches were Baptist, and… yeah, none of that crap anymore. xD

    Daft_ish ,

    What’s even the point of deciphering the Bible when you can make it say what ever it is you like. Why not just start with what you want to believe and patch together Bible verses that support it?

    squiblet ,
    @squiblet@kbin.social avatar

    That’s my main problem with the culture. If people want to believe random supernatural stories written long in the past and use that as a basis for their morality… uh, okay… I just don’t like how they rely on other people to do their reading and interpretation.

    catloaf ,

    The court of public opinion has a much lower burden of proof than the court of law.

    stephen01king ,

    If Scarlett Johansson is trying to accuse them of using her voice without consent, do you really think it will only end up in the court of public opinion? My point is that it might escalate to court, which OpenAI might not want to deal with. Backing down in this case is just as much of an admission of guilt as taking a settlement out of court, which is not at all.

    admin ,
    @admin@lemmy.my-box.dev avatar

    Because lawsuits are expensive, even when you’re not guilty.

    I don’t think they’d be stupid enough to lie about hiring a voice actress for a voice model when they didn’t.

    webghost0101 ,

    Guy you replied to did miss that part but consider the (still to be verified) facts.

    • they ask to use her voice, she declined.
    • they proceed by not using her voice. Someone else’s voice instead.

    oPeNaI “believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice—Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice. To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents.”

    The end result is pretty clear here. Either this other person exist and could testify privately in court with her natural voice which she has the rights to work with OpenAi. There is a closure in law where not being able to provide evidence that the court knows must exist can make you guilty. Openai could have tried to pull a “this is a fully unique synthetic voice” but crucially they did not.
