Before covid I switched jobs. Got about $12k more. Months go by, COVID hits and I can’t do my job (didn’t have the flexibility and daycare was shut down). So I get my old job back but said I’d do it for $X where X was another $10k above from the new job.

Switching jobs definitely works. It sucks giving up a sure thing and the comfort zone though

NY case likely will be retried and this doesn’t affect the 16 years or whatever in California.

My wife works in a large suburban office park off a major highway. The company designs hardware so obviously they have people in the workshop on-site etc, but you could remove three of their office buildings and keep those people at home. She also flies out from the east coast to the west coast twice a year just to sit in a conference room for two days straight… it’s like no one has ever heard of Zoom.

I’ve been working from home for nearly a decade and a half now. It has enabled me to keep my job after moving halfway across the country. I have dinner ready when the wife and kids get home, the laundry done, and can go for a jog at the local park for a few laps when I want to and yet I still get shit done and do a great job.

It just absolutely baffles me that CEOs aren’t chomping at the bit to downsize their office space footprints, get off those leases or sell off their properties, and let everyone work from home.

Not a fan of it being forced upon anyone but I’ll add lately that I’ve been using it to spit out Python scripts and ansible playbooks to stunning efficiency that makes my life much easier.

I tried Bard last year and it sucked, maybe Gemini is better now. I could see myself paying for one of these eventually, given how much more free time I have with the kids (or at the bar!).

Oh nice. Thank you.

I’ve spent the last 15 years working with VMware exclusively. A little nervous about all of this

RalphFurley ,

I’ve done this for so long I might just be like that old Cobol programmer in need during Y2K at some point.

I took a good look at Apache CloudStack. I of course have been migrating stuff to k8s and working with cloud native stuff that can be hypervisor independent or bare metal even.

I’m this close to an NSX-T cert and that will be the last one. That will be in high demand for quite some time I’d expect.

I used toothpaste and it never seems to completely work

I haven’t driven in decades. It’s something I’m terrified of. Luckily I’ve lived in dense urban areas so even well before Uber/Lyft there was always plenty of public transit and cab stands everywhere.

I was just today trying FF again and discovered vertical tabs was via extension only and holy shit disabling the tabs up top looked like a bit of work. Native vertical tabs and grouping and I’m back. It should just copy the layout that Edge does.

Thank you

Comparing Discord to IRC is like comparing playing tennis to baking a cake. Just two entirely different things.

‘The Bonnie Situation’ from Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino is in this meme and is in the clip from the movie. B’Elanna is a Klingon from Voyager. The word Klingon is a replacement for another word in the clip, I’ll just leave it at that. The title of the post works well because B’Elanna and Bonnie start with the same letter.

You could literally start at season 3 and go from there and you wouldn’t miss anything. Enjoy, it gets better and better

I keep drifting back and forth between whole food plant based and vegetarian for about the past 13 years. I got no beef with meat eaters but I couldn’t imagine putting that into my mouth and the process of masticating it. Although on St Patrick’s Day looking at the corned beef sandwiches took me back in time for a brief moment.

I know he has an off switch. But as we all know, he’s incredibly strong and fast.

Should I learn Docker or Podman?

Hi, I’ve been thinking for a few days whether I should learn Docker or Podman. I know that Podman is more FOSS and I like it more in theory, but maybe it’s better to start with docker, for which there is a lot more tutorials. On the other hand, maybe it’s better to straight up learn podman when I don’t know any of the...

RalphFurley ,

I just downloaded Podman Desktop and am playing with this. Almost all videos and tutorials out there are for Docker but I’m going to watch those but actually use Podman instead to learn.

RalphFurley ,

I waited til they were there before I have them honey, hah

Man I thought the other night was bad. Just got my new fizzy drink maker machine. Showed my kids how awesome fizzy orange juice is. I didn’t release the pressure after fizzing it up, remove the bottle and BOOM, fizzy OJ goes EVERYWHERE… ceiling, my face, walls, the clean dishes on the drying rack, windows etc etc. lol

RalphFurley ,

DrinkMate will fizzify any liquid, it’s different than the soda stream where you add their flavors. I use this for water mostly tho

I carbonate my own water and drink lots of tea

Years ago when I visited Germany (a hotel in Heidelberg), there happened to be another American in front of me at the hotel. He asked for water. The young woman behind the counter, knowing he was American from his language and accent, said: “Would you like any gasoline in your water?”

He was very confused, and I couldn’t contain myself, bursting out in laughter. I stepped in and explained, she meant to say “gas” and was asking if he wanted still water or bubbly water. She knew most Americans didn’t drink carbonated water, at least then – a few years later brands like La Croix would sweep the country’s soccer moms all over the States.

We Americans think it’s funny but then I remember that these people know multiple languages and of course someone is going to get a word wrong here and there.

I also remember the four of us at dinner getting served waters and the waitress was saying “please” as she sat down each one on the coaster on the table. Which my understanding is that she was translating ‘bitte’ to English and that word has many meanings, one of them meaning please but can be used when your hand something over, if I’m not mistaken.

RalphFurley ,

I’ve got a plain older countertop device with mini CO2 cartridges (with a cheap exchange program) for now. I am redoing my living room and study soon and will get a kegarator soon so I have it on tap.

I don’t need the flavors infused. But if I’m feeling fancy I’ll add a slice of lime or lemon, or both (usually when I need to use the rest of one after making dinner). Although it is my understanding this is certainly possible, adding flavours/syrups or what not.

I worked at a restaurant in the kitchen. We had a place on the wall to hang brushes. The GREEN brushes were to be used for food/prep areas only. The white brushes were for cleaning toilets, and other filthy places.

The white brushes were soaked in buckets and rinsed/washed thoroughly in a slop sink, then later, put in the racks that push through the dishwasher conveyor belt that ran through the machine if I recall correctly. It’s been more than 20 years
