TUBA: Terrible Underwater Breathing Apparatus

If you’re on a scam binge, the NYT (yes, I know) Daily podcast did a piece on how drug cartels are scamming people using the sale of property

podchaser.com/…/how-one-family-lost-900000-in-206…

wallybeavis ,

I feel bad for both parties in these scams. The scammer, from what I’ve read, is duped into the job and threatened with violence and death (along with their family) to continue the work. On the other side are the poor kids who risk a level of psychological damage that may take years to repair, if it can be repaired…all for a few bucks

Inspired by this article. Thankfully it seems more like a chest thumping move, rather than standard practice. It’s not like there are hordes of addicts ravaging cemeteries like some post apocalyptic movie

tl;dr Allegedly, addicts in Sierra Leone are mixing crushed human bones into their drugs, for a little extra pep in their step

I feel like I’m being judged…and I don’t think it’s going to end well 😂

You should also post to !superbowl so everyone can enjoy this pic

I’m also on Gnome, but I use Konsole for the ‘Copy Input to Tab’ or ‘Copy Input to All Tabs in window.’ In my use case scenario, it’s super helpful to be able to type or paste a cmd once, and have it populate multiple tabs, or specific tabs in multiple windows. It does take a little tweaking to get it to obey the dark theme settings, but once upon a time I actually created a custom dark theme, just so I could use Konsole on Gnome. Things are much easier these days 😁 I’ll have to check out Tilix, I haven’t heard of it before, but that may be b/c I literally work by myself in the dank dark basement of the building…I don’t think the cleaning crew even knows that I’m down here

Also you can export your client list, which is helpful when migrating from machine to machine

Need a USBC to USBC/3.5mm jack splitter

Bought a pair of Sennheiser 560s for my computer but I’d like something to plug them into my phone. Of course, my phone doesn’t have a headphone jack (fuck you Google) so I need an adapter. I’d prefer one that allows me to charge and plug my headphones in at the same time, but I can’t find one that seems decent quality....

Belkin makes a dongle like that, I’ve not had a chance to test it, but Amazon has reviews if you want to roll the dice for $10 + $5 Shipping

wallybeavis ,

For some reason I can’t edit my earlier post. The seller w/ that price is not Amazon…so a big YMMV. Here’s one from Amazon for $30, so if you want to return it it should be less of a hassle

So close. It’s like they knew they had to do something, just not exactly what

Thank you for pointing that out, because I had no idea. I must’ve checked that box by accident. beep boop beep 😂

wallybeavis ,

Do you have a recipe you can share? Whenever I’ve added barley to soup I only get about one good meal, leftovers tend to have the barley absorbing all of the broth (which is still delicious, just not soup any longer)…I suppose I could cook the barley separately, keep it in the fridge, and add it to the soup prior to reheating…hmm, I too have a box of barley in the cupboard and I just made bean and potato soup yesterday

wallybeavis ,

Wow, thank you! I’m going to try it this weekend

wallybeavis ,

Thank you!

wallybeavis ,

Definitely! For electronics, Eneloop batteries are worth every penny. I think I have ~10 AA and AAA, and I haven’t bought disposable batteries in years. I try to make sure I have 4 of each available at all times so I don’t have to wait for them to recharge. I’ve tried cheaper (Amazon) batteries, and they fail much more quickly, and sometimes swell to the point where I have a hard time removing them.

Some people say IKEA’s batteries are just rebranded Eneloops, but I haven’t had a chance to try them

I use the uBlock Origin extension to block instances. If it’s available on your browser:

  • click the uBlock Origin icon next to the URL bar in your browser
  • click on the gears icon
  • Select the ‘My Filters’ tab

add this line (assuming you’re on lemmy.ml and hexbear.net is the instance you wish to block): lemmy.ml##.post-listing:has-text(@hexbear.net)

Please keep in mind, this is using a sledgehammer to swat a gnat. YMMV

Re-using an 8 bay Synology NAS case

I have an old Synology 1819 NAS that was the unfortunate victim of the Intel Atom/Clock bug. I would like to repurpose the case as I like the compact form factor. Has anyone tried replacing a synology mobo with something else (ex: an ITX board or a Raspberry Pi), and using an alternative operating system?

wallybeavis OP ,

I think you’re right, it measures 200x145x15mm with 2 PCIe slots at right angles connecting to the backplane. I’d had it taken apart for so long I hadn’t considered the height. I was also wrong about the model# it was an 1815, now that I look at the mobo. I guess I could re-purpose the case for something else. I appreciate the reply, looks like I’m going hunting for a similar form factor case this weekend

wallybeavis OP ,

I was incorrect about the model#, it’s actually an 1815. I’d had it apart for so long I’d forgotten. I was going to try the resistor ‘fix,’ but too many people were reporting erractic behaviour after they’d done the same. I may re-purpose the case for something else as it seems only something like a Raspberry pi or one of the Adafruit boards would fit

wallybeavis OP ,

I had no idea that existed, that’s a slick piece of HW. If I pull the case off I may be able to shoehorn it into the spot where the old mobo was. I could also just rip out the Synology backplane, add a sata expansion card, and make it a general purpose NAS, just with fewer disks.

My hope was to re-use the case to backup ~30TB of RAIDed storage. This is an excellent find, thank you!

wallybeavis OP ,

I’m going to have to give the hair dryer trick a shot, I’d already migrated to a 1821, so I’m not sure if it’ll boot diskless…but getting a busted NAS to boot with a hairdryer, is too hilarious not to attempt 😂

wallybeavis OP ,

I defintely will!

wallybeavis ,

I’ve seen posts where I had to assume OP/the commenter wasn’t a native English speaker, because of the sentence structure and odd choice of words. A multilingual platform such as lemmy, can sometimes leave you scratching your head. Since I don’t speak a 2nd or 3rd language I’m always in awe of polyglots. I always try to offer an olive branch by assuming the fault was mine, and I wasn’t clear enough in my wording.

however…

There are people (myself included) who will skim long form texts, rather than actually reading all of the words (thanks to every prof who’s ever assigned busy work or HW on a school holiday). I can only speak for myself when I say, once I’ve skimmed something, if I get to the end and it doesn’t add up, I go back and re-read it in its entirety. I have to imagine in a world of 6 billion people, there willl be some who don’t choose to re-read the text, and choose outrage…also some people just think it’s funny to be contrarian, there’s not much you can do about that, other than smile and move along.

Tomorrow you will wake up, the world will be full of promise, and maybe a satisfying breakfast, and you won’t even remember [email protected]…they, on the other hand will wake up, and still be them…

Canon Connections: 2x07 - Those Old Scientists

• In the episode “No Small Parts” Ransom explains to Captain Freeman that he calls the 2260s the ”TOS Era” in honour of ”Those Old Scientists” like Spock and and Scotty. Of course, this episode takes place in 2259, so clearly it’s time for a shake-up among the SNW production team....

I agree! This was the first one of !USSBurritoTruck’s posts I’ve seen, and also one of my favorite episodes yet. I just read it over my lunch, and I think I will need to re-read it again when I get home - just in case I missed anything. Thank you !USSBurritoTruck!

That is so weird, I thought those plastic soup container labels were printed on. I don’t know how that made it past quality control

wallybeavis ,

Thank you for this! I’ve always been annoyed by non-collapsable, intrusive sidebars. Slashdot’s just seemed to get wider, and wider, over the years.

I’d found this when I used to go to old.reddit: javascript:$(‘.side’).toggle();void(0);

I made it a bookmark on my bookmark tool bar to toggle the right sidebar on my main page
