Interesting. Where I live anything over an hour can result in a pretty drastic weather difference.

walden ,

Physical, because I couldn’t get eSim to work on T-Mobile. Wasted tons of time trying to activate it.

walden ,

I’ve been happy with AirVPN.

walden ,

Who did you switch to?

I used to connect to AirVPN using their Eddie client, but now I use wireguard and it’s very stable.

walden ,

Wow, and here I am struggling to sleep for 8 hours.

walden ,

Not all landscapers can “landscape”. Hired a guy to build a pad for a shed which included a small retaining wall. The guy doesn’t own a level, and the end result is visibly not level. I showed him with my laser level what was going on, and he didn’t believe me. He started adding MORE material to the high spot.

He was aggressive about needing to be paid. Very aggressive. I paid him since he knows where we live. Unless we sue him and win, we’re out $4800, and to have it done correctly (with a fancier wall) will be $6500.

TLDR: Don’t hire a lawn service company to build anything.

walden ,

It didn’t need any concrete, I hired him to do a stone wall. I didn’t want anything fancy, and had the whole thing been level I would have been happy enough with it.

walden ,

I have a good 4M camera covering the entire front of our house already. Driveway, front yard, front door, etc. We’ll see if I take him to court. It’s really not worth the effort and time at this point, but it would be fun to waste his time even if I lose.

walden ,

I really enjoyed BlackBerry. I’m old enough to remember their coming and going, and even had a Blackberry Storm for a while.

walden ,

Don’t force it. Some people’s “regular” is every couple+ days. I know a guy who goes after every meal. The food you eat helps of course, and stay hydrated.

walden ,

Radio control airplanes. It’s being regulated to death since the advent of quadcopters/drones.

walden ,

Maybe a general pop-up blocker which is built into modern browsers now, but something that blocks tracking and ads (for example uBlock Origin, AdGuard Home, PiHole…) works off of a list which is kept up to date by crowdsourcing. I’ve never contributed to one of these efforts, but there are lots of people dedicated to the cause.

walden ,

Do you want to be able to access it from a browser? Gnucash is a standalone program, but you could edit the file from anywhere as long as you have access to it.

I’ve never used Gnucash for business purposes, but it’s certainly capable. There’s a learning curve to it but it’s not too bad. I never got online banking set up with it, but you can import .csv, etc.

walden ,

I still don’t know what the drama is.

walden ,

I have it running in a Dell Optiplex that I bought used with an i7-4790 and a Coral Mini-PCIe. I had to buy an adapter for the Mini-PCIe, but that depends on your motherboard.

I only have 2 cameras – a 1080p Amcrest wifi cam, and a 4MP Amcrest wired camera. For the 4MP camera, I use a lower resolution sub-stream for motion detection, because motion detection is CPU only. Once Frigate detects motion, it then sends everything to the Coral for object detection. That’s my understanding, at least.

Frigate is wonderful.

walden ,

Really cool. Thanks for digitizing it all.

walden ,

Just turn your chair around and it’ll switch.

walden ,

That’s why we disabled the buy-sell-trade community on our niche instance. Nobody got scammed during the short time it was open, but if a username can be duplicated it makes scamming that much easier.

walden ,

I have mismatched drives. Mostly 8TB, and 2 10TB. The 10TB are simply wasted money, but no other downsides.

walden ,

I’m interested in what people have to say!

I recently copied over a reddit wiki to Wiki.js. I had to watch a couple of tutorials, but in the end it’s really simple. It uses the headers for whatever you type to automatically make clickable links.

Is that common for wiki software? I don’t know.

The only thing that I’m trying to decide if I like is the 3 column navigation. Far left is the top level subjects, then there’s a second column of navigation for the current section, and finally the 3rd “column” is all of the wiki text.

walden ,

Just curious why you think it’s a scam? It’s a type of account that has tax benefits.

walden ,

If that happens to your 401k, that’s your fault. As you get older you are supposed to shift things to be more conservative… You can even put your money in things that are guaranteed to not go down. There are target date funds that do this for you without you having to think about it (although I think target date funds are a little too conservative from the start).

walden ,

Every 401k account I’ve ever had comes with a “let us manage it for you” option.

walden ,

I think it depends… If you’re happy with your shots, a bottomless might just expose you to info that might drive you crazy.

Bottomless lets you see how well or how poorly things are going. You’ll experience spraying, see obvious channeling, see uneven shots, etc.

A spout keeps all that stuff secret so you can focus on how it tastes.

I use a bottomless from Joe Frex, with one of those fancy “competition” baskets. I like it.

My Docker containers can no longer communicate with the host's local network

I feel like I’m losing my mind. A few days ago, all of my containers running on Docker Desktop on my Windows Server host were working nicely. I had NFS volumes set up on a few of them to reach my synology NAS on my local network, and things were working fine. I’ve done so much digging and tweaking over the last few days, so...

walden ,

If using it solely for Docker, I wouldn’t go the Proxmox route. Just install Debian and go from there.

walden ,

Yes, but a caveat is that not all of their switches can run RouterOS. Some can only run SwitchOS, which I’ve heard is on its way out… So avoid that hardware.

I have an RB5009 router and I like it a lot.

walden ,

That’s neat, I didn’t know that.

walden ,

Does wikipedia have pictures of the characters?

!wetshaving

I took over and got an auto-bot going for the daily threads. We have a small but active core group of people there, and I have another buddy lined up to help run the place when he has more time.

It was a lot busier during the reddit boycott, but most people have returned to reddit… July and August have some big “events” at r/wetshaving that a ton of people participate in, so activity has moved back there.

A big problem that !wetshaving ran into was the bot breaking with the upgrade to 0.18.x, which had the unfortunate timing of happening when everyone helping run the place got really busy with one of the reddit events, and it made it seem like the instance had been abandoned.

I think over time it’ll develop into a decent community. My next project is hosting a wiki based on the r/wetshaving wiki.

walden ,

It’s still alive and well. r/wetshaving is organized differently and has a great community feel to it. In general, the people in r/wetshaving are more discerning about their hobby than what you might find at r/wicked_edge. There are giveaways (PIFs), contests, the occasional review, dedicated threads for certain types of posts, etc. Wicked Edge is a bit of a free-for-all for people who prefer that format.

walden ,

Thanks for your insight. The daily threads are an important aspect to how we want the community to be organized. The users there are accustomed to this type of organization. The alternative is something like thesimplecorner.org/c/wicked_edge, where there’s a new post for each “shave of the day”. The more users you have, the more cluttered it gets.

With the current traffic that we have, daily threads might be overkill, but we want to be set up for success from the start. As it stands, you can open one thread to read everyone’s “shave of the day” posts, make conversation, etc. You can scroll and see everyone’s posts instead of clicking “back”, looking for the next one, opening them in a bunch of different tabs, etc.

You're lying down, trying to sleep. Some part of your body is itchy, scratching will wake you up, not scratching will remain itchy. Do you scratch or wait for the itch to go away?

I have this issue often. I know if I scratch, it will wake me up and take longer to sleep because of my body movement. If I don’t scratch, my mind only focuses on the itch. Sometimes I’ll wait 5 minutes for the scratch to go away and then I just cave and start scratching any minor itch I have on my body. Has anyone just not...

Is it possible to burn fat without changing my weight?

I have been working a very labor intensive job for about 3 months now and have lost enough inches on my waist to go down two pants sizes yet my total weight when I go on the scale remains around the same. How is it possible that I lost 4 or 5 inches off my waist yet the scale doesn’t change? Is it possible what weight in fat I...

walden ,

Yes, a given volume of muscle weighs more than the same volume of fat. I don’t know if a specific ratio, but it probably varies from person to person.

TLS/SSL Certs for Docker-based Lemmy deployment

I was hoping to get some help from you all, since I assume there are a good number of people here selfhosting their own instance of Lemmy. There doesn’t appear to be a search bar for per community searching, so I thought I’d post my question in case anyone else has a similar one. I’ve created my own Lemmy instance running...

walden ,

I like NPM a lot. Nginx on its own was confusing to me. NPM is fast to configure and works really well.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

walden ,

My main activity on Reddit is wetshaving related. A cool user there started this instance so I joined it. We’ve set it up as similarly to the subreddit as possible as far as rules and organization goes.

That’s a cool tool that you linked to! Instances will undoubtedly come and go over the years, and it’s good to know something like that exists.

walden ,

I wrote a response with links and stuff but it wouldn’t submit… anyway read the integration pages. Some things you are expecting don’t work, and Apple TV has a troubleshooting section.

walden ,

I subscribe to communities on multiple instances. My main activity is on our niche instance. If people are happy signing up at lemmy.world and limiting themselves to the communities available there, I see nothing wrong with that.

That being said, I think if you search lemmy.world for wetshaving, as an example, our instance does show up in the results because there is federated cross-over (for lack of a better term).

walden ,

2 months old?! Oops.
