The life expectancy of 75 is an average (of the US population i assume), billionaires are likely to live longer

Do you use both a personal desktop and laptop?

I’m moreso curious if laptop functions have been offloaded to phones. If you have a full gaming desktop, do you see the use case for an additional laptop? or if most people here don’t see the need for the increased processing power of a desktop, do you just use your laptop and a phone?...

thawed_caveman , (edited )

I do have a backup laptop, which does come in handy for the rare case of, for example, making a new install.

But yeah, i feel like a laptop is an awkward middle ground between a phone and a desktop. It’s not as powerful and has a small screen, but it’s also not as portable as my phone.

Granted if i travelled more i would need a laptop, and then i would have a dock of some kind at home to extend its capabilities (USB hub, second monitor, etc)

thawed_caveman ,

I do think it’s a good idea to do what you did and just try it as is, since there’s actually a pretty decent chance that it just works.

However, if it doesn’t work, i would check everything as if i’m building the PC from scratch. Are the parts compatible (good old pcpartpicker is here for that), is the PSU sufficient, is everything plugged in the way the manuals say, etc

thawed_caveman ,

See the thing is i’m not worldly enough to know what common animals in my country are uncommon in other countries. I mean there’s some mallards here and there, the ones with the green head just like the meme, are those exotic and surprising? Oh, my old hometown has swans. They’re surprisingly aggressive.

What i will say though is that i definitely feel that way about architecture. I quite like the winding medieval back alley leading to a church built in 980 (as in the year), it’s cool; but Americans will have a spiritual experience over it because no building in the US is that old.

thawed_caveman ,

Any statement that boils down to “this extractive industry is environmentally sustainable” is massively suspicious. I don’t trust that statement at all. I don’t buy that you can produce palm oil on that scale while respecting nature.

thawed_caveman ,

I’m gonna have to nuance that: while palm oil is an environmental disaster, it is in fact the most efficient vegetable oil in terms of land area per ton of finished product. This is because the the plant that produces it is incredibly productive, more than sunflowers or rapeseed.

So changing to other vegetable oils would result in more land area being cultivated overall.

thawed_caveman ,

So let me get this straight: they cut down the forest, plant palm trees, harvest it for i guess a few years, and then… plant the forest back? How does that make sense just on any level?

I mean at least i happen to know it doesn’t make sense on an ecological level as a new groth forest is massively different from an old growth forest, so the new forest is no replacement for the old one.

Also i’m not sure if you understand what an argument from ignorance is? It’s not an ignorant argument, it’s a specific type of logical fallacy. The observation that no extractive industry has proven sustainable is a predictor that they’re unlikely to prove sustainable in the future.

I’m currently using a 2008 hard drive and i really hope it has some life left in it because i haven’t backed up the contents yet

thawed_caveman ,

Same reason there’s no fascist party: the two main parties contain a broader range of the political spectrum than in most countries.

From there the question is does the moderate or radical wing of the party gain more influence. The far-right has won the Republican party years ago while progressives still haven’t gained that much ground in the Democratic party.

Man i wrote two lines, how is that too much to read

i don’t give a fuck what anal feels like i want this image of goth nick wilde

thawed_caveman ,

I’ve recently plugged and unplugged a lot of monitors, and the way DP keeps itself attached it with those little claws, and you have to push a button to release it. But when there’s 4 monitors plugged into the same GPU, you can’t access those buttons. The struggle was real.

In comparison the DVI connector just needed a screwdriver

thawed_caveman ,

This is a thing that annoys me and it’s not just Microsoft doing this: there’s never a “No” button, it’s always “Not now” or “Maybe later”. As if i’m going to reconsider. As if it’s an honest offer worth thinking about and not a pop-up.

thawed_caveman ,

A lot has been said about Call of Duty MWII, but if your theory is correct then we’ll have to say that, of all things, its plot was prescient. And i’m not ready for that

I know we are the BetterThanReddit website, but let’s not act like Lemmy is immune from this

thawed_caveman , (edited )

All of this is cuckoo. I don’t know what it is about the audiophile market that makes it full of stuff like this. Them calling it “proprietary”, being vage about “minerals and fluids” involved and assuring us that their techniques “took years to develop”, is red flag language that i’ve heard over and over again.

Also this article is written like crap.

thawed_caveman ,

Yeah i’ve learned not to trust this kind of simmetrical worldview, even when it makes me feel smart for being above it.

thawed_caveman , (edited )

I feel like AI companies have been scraping Reddit for their datasets already since the beginning and without permission. In fact, unless there’s been a regulation change that i’m not aware of, i’m not sure why they would have Reddit “sign away” the data when they can just scrape it.

Also dubious if the current form of AI has a future. They seem like they should revolutionize every sector when you look at their capacities, but in practice their applications might be more limited than we thought?

Anyway, if Reddit does go public i will be deleting my account within the hour. The only reason i haven’t yet is that i’ve been a moderator of the same subreddit for eight years and it’s the only thing that’s been consistent in my life in that time, i’m kind of attached. The reason i will is i didn’t sign up to create value for shareholders, i signed up to create value for a community.

thawed_caveman ,

Well no, because the old sub will continue to exist and will therefore always be where everyone goes until Reddit itself dies. I really doubt admins would let me delete the sub.

thawed_caveman ,

I would have sworn that autosave was enabled by default in absolutely every software that has anything to save since like the 2000s, you’re throwing me on a loop here.

As far as text editors actually, i feel like they may be constantly saving, particularly if they’re cloud-based. But i’ve been using LibreOffice for a while so i wouldn’t know. (and yes i did have to enable autosave)

thawed_caveman ,

Ok but what’s your argument against autosave? You haven’t made one?

thawed_caveman ,

It’s true that such a bill was introduced, but wacky bills are introduced all the time. This is proposed legislation, they haven’t even voted on it yet, and it’s extremely unlikely to pass.

But i think it’s also true that you can tell where legislator’s minds are based on what wacky bills they introduce.

thawed_caveman OP ,

y’ever notice how a lot of meme formats are really similar

thawed_caveman ,

But in this situation you can drink water and wash it down, preventing acid damage to your eusophagus. The author of this greentext can’t get water into their intestines.

thawed_caveman ,

And the acidity makes normal tap water taste sweet as if it has sugar in it, it’s pretty neat

thawed_caveman ,

Question answered OP, this will be your daily life until the sweet relief of death

thawed_caveman ,

So dry them thoroughly before eating?

And then you DIY distill the pickle juice to get as much water and as little acid as possible

According to my googling, they may be by Li-Anne Dias? But the artist’s website is so bad you’re better off reading the comics when they’re reposted elsewhere

But these are so classic they even mention Windows XP

If you’re in this bathroom sober, you’ll feel drunk.

If you’re in this bathroom drunk, your mind will escape into the 4th dimension and you may not be coming back.

thawed_caveman ,

I only install what i need so i haven’t actually installed a lot of apps. The copout answer is Firefox, but if i’m taking the prompt seriously it would be Simple Keyboard or Floris Board, they’re highly customizeable keyboards that i really enjoy and i have a hard time deciding which to leave installed.

Just in general though, browsing F-Droid feels so good. I’m in a much simpler mindset where i’ll think “oh that’s neat i want to try it”, which is how i used to feel about tech. Browsing PlayStore makes me think “that’s neat, but what’s the catch? How are they going to scam me/harvest my data? I’m not installing this”

thawed_caveman ,

A lot of the images didn’t load because they “contained errors”

thawed_caveman ,

I’m gonna be 100% honest here. I would do this if i were president.

thawed_caveman ,

A Johnny Halliday impersonator.

Johnny Halliday was the french version of Elvis Presley, except he lived long enough to release too many albums and become unbearable.

What’s impressive is that he became one of the best selling artists of all times while selling records almost exclusively in France. I don’t think he ever left the mainstream since the 60’s.

Lemmy.world Should Defederate with Threads

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the majority of us are here to avoid another corporate takeover of our preferred platforms. It would seem to me to be a tad irresponsible to allow Facebook into our space with open arms, allowing them to hoover up our data. I would love to keep using Lemmy.world, but will happily change...

thawed_caveman ,

I feel strongly that we should defederate, but i really like your reasoning for being neutral. The fediverse is currently a small community of advanced internet users who see themselves as separate from mainstream users, and the temptation is to gatekeep.

thawed_caveman ,

Since 2010 i’ve made three Facebook accounts, deleted one and never use the other two. Active users would be a more useful metric.

It’s been commented on before that, for its size, Twitter has a disproportionate influence not just on the internet but even on politics. This is still the case today because no good alternatives have emerged for the mainstream yet.

thawed_caveman ,

This is comical because Israel is the attacker, and has been for its entire existence. Their goal is to conquer and ethnically cleanse more territory in order to create an enthnostate.

Hamas only exists as a reaction to israeli colonialism. That’s litterally the only reason for their existence.

So, to be precise:

  • Israel is finishing a war they did not start

Maybe not in the narrow sense, but the colonial efforts of Israel are responsible for the broader conflict lasting since the 50’s, which the current conflict is a chapter of.

  • There is literally no way around it

It’s not necessary for Israel to conquer Gaza. It would be enough to just not expand their territory and respect human rights and international law, which they never did at any point in 70 years, leading to the current situation where there are no good options anymore.

  • The terror attack was the proof that restraint didn’t do anything

The terror attack is a consequence of lack of restraint. (i wouldn’t normally word it like that, i’m just using the same words for rhetoric effect)

thawed_caveman ,

Yeah, but the further back you go the less useful it becomes. If you look before Israel you find the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Roman Empire; two of these don’t exist anymore and the last doesn’t really exist anymore.

The choice of which time range to include isn’t that arbitrary, there are pretty significant markers that make the previous state of things a lot less relevant. When studying french politics, it’s not useful to go back further than the 1789 revolution because that event changed so much that the previous reality doesn’t matter anymore; similarly, the foundation of Israel changed the power dynamics in the area significantly enough that you can start there. Remembering the previous events is useful for context but won’t change the conclusion.

thawed_caveman ,

I never talk to anyone so i have no incentive to other than my own comfort. I do feel more comfortable when i’m clean, but my mere comfort often doesn’t feel like reason enough when executive dysfunction makes a shower is a 1-hour affair, plus i have a weird anxiety around thriftiness so i don’t like to “waste” the warm water and soap.

Same reason why the house isn’t as clean as it could be. It would be cleaner if anyone came in here ever, but no one does, so the only reason to vaccuum is my own satisfaction, which isn’t worth the time and effort.

All told i end up showering every ~5 days in winter and once a day in summer, and i never touch the perfume bottles. I actually don’t really get the point of perfume or deodorant tbh, seems like the solution to BO is a shower.

thawed_caveman ,

Yeah but look at all the stuff you do besides showering, the shaving and hair care and such. I’m genuinely just talking about the shower itself. There’s convincing myself to shower, then there’s watching youtube videos with my clothes off, then there’s spending too long in the hot shower because i don’t want to step out into the cold bathroom, then there’s drawing shapes on the fogged mirror, etc

I think my expectation for quick showers comes from my upbringing? For a few years growing up we had the toilet, sink and shower all in the same bathroom, and that bathroom was being used by like 6 people. So every minute spent in the shower was inconveniencing someone else. idk

thawed_caveman ,

This has to be fake, an accident would happen within days of installing it and then the city is liable. Ask you city government if they enjoy liability.

At least i know i would be terrified the whole time i’m sitting on it and wouldn’t actually be rested at all

thawed_caveman ,

This is not a valid argument ecause everything surrounding us is designed and facilitated by capitalism, and certainly all our electronics, there’s no such thing as computers independent from capitalism. There weren’t even in the soviet union. So it’s not possible for this anon to actually live what they preach unless they went full anarcho-primitivism.

Not that it would matter anyway, because you’re allowed to criticize a system that you participate in.

thawed_caveman ,

Yes, all of the evils of capitalism are constantly commented on. This isn’t the CNN comments section.

thawed_caveman ,

Nothing here is portraying capitalism as pure evil, it’s highlighting a problem that we currently have as a society. I find it really weird how eager you are to argue while not really having a point to make.

Mozilla Senior Director of Content explained why Mozilla has taken an interest in the fediverse and Mastodon (techcrunch.com)

"the company looked at the history of social media over the past decade and didn’t like what it saw… existing companies that are only model motivated by profit and just insane user growth, and are willing to tolerate and amplify really toxic content because it looks like engagement… "

thawed_caveman ,

Shifting the power from a CEO to an instance admin is a massive improvement.

One has autocratic control over the entire site, potentially hundreds of millions of users, investors breathing down their neck, server infrastructure, and other systemic pressures; meanwhile, a fediverse instance admin has autocratic control over nothing but their own instance, a few thousand users at most, with the only money and hardware involved being their own.

The fediverse is incredibly more horizontal and decentralized than any corporate social media, the improvement is massive. And i’m a believer that vertical structures and concentrations of power are at the root of a lot of problems in society, so this is gravy to me.

But yes, it’s worth remembering that it’s not completely decentralized, and admins still have absolute power over their instance. My Mastodon instance admin doesn’t want us to use the name GIMP to refer to the open source image manipulator; they say “gimp” is a slur aimed at disabled people, which i’ve never heard before in my life.
