what do you have in mind? Jabber/XMPP is very similar.

It runs on any old raspberry pi (any but raspberry pi 1 I believe) in your house, can be used by family and friends as well. Has iOS and Android apps… I have had good experiences with the easy to set up snikket.org XMPP server.

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....
