I've seen a vanload of tourists happily taking pictures of sheep on more than one occasion. New Zealand.

Will I ever be seen as truly British?

My family immigrated to the UK from Poland when I was six. I’m 20 now, speak much better English than Polish and feel like this is my land/culture. However I have a Polish first and last name, Polish passport and “unique” accent everyone picks up on, so despite this I’m usually perceived as an outsider. It makes me...

You might feel more comfortable in a larger city. In London every person you meet has a different accent, it's amazing.

Russia threatens Britain with retaliation if involvement in Ukraine war deepens (www.pbs.org)

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities and said it would hold drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons amid sharply rising tensions over comments by senior Western officials about possibly deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine....

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities

This is equivalent to USA threatening to strike North Korean, Iranian or Chinese facilities (all of whom have been arming Russia). No such threats have been made.

Just so we're clear who's escalating things.

Yeah I was heavily into peak oil once, too.

Don't underestimate the power of literally everyone on the planet really really wanting to avoid that situation. Life finds a way.

No - the VPN provider has another DHCP server for use 'inside' the VPN.

In the comments on the article people have debugged their cloudflare/caching configuration for them and told them what they're doing wrong.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Not all servers are equal. I would trust a post from lemmy.world or lemmy.ml to have valid metadata, for example. It'd be great if admins had some way to specify trusted instances (with the biggest 6 instances as initial defaults).

There would be other uses for the trusted instances concept. Automatic sharing of moderation actions, block lists, community lists, etc

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Link previews for content from untrusted instances could still be generated just as they are now.

The centralisation that has happened is a separate issue.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

I've found that if left on default settings, CloudFlare is not that great at caching. It requires a bit of configuration to really make it sing. itsfoss.com thought they were "using CloudFlare" but probably not to it's fullest potential.

This is the kind of inflation that raising interest rates cannot solve. They'll try it anyway.

I appreciate the practical suggestions section, there's some great ideas there.

You might be interested in the low bandwidth mode that https://piefed.social has. It can be enabled during login and removes most of the images and Javascript.

Really, developers need new tools to support these values. Our dev tools report on performance and reliability but not on sustainability / energy use / CO2. Our programming frameworks offer flexibility, power and expand-ability but never intentionally constrain our energy / waste / performance. The only exception to this that I've seen is Google App Engine which has some resource utilization limits and a pretty limited ORM that feels like fighting with one hand tied behind my back sometimes.

The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the globe’s largest industrial co-operative, with workers paying for the right to share in its profits – and its losses. In return for giving more to their employer, they expect more back.

There is a book "From Mondragon to America" which goes into excruciating detail about how it all works. It's not just a few factories there are credit unions, food coops and more all doing business together.

You could use a VPN to obscure your IP address. Then with the VPN enabled, create an email account using a privacy-focused provider like Proton and use that email address to create a Lemmy / Mastodon account. Then post.

Perhaps you can get more technical advice in one of the privacy communities.

Ubuntu has a set of scripts you can run to harden a new server (not advisable on a server that has already been configured for something). You need an Ubuntu Pro subscription to access them but you can get a free trial and then cancel it after you've finished.

More info at https://ubuntu.com/security/cis.

I did this process for a customer recently and it was pretty straightforward and much much more thorough (over 100 configuration changes) than just tweaking SSH and fail2ban.

I expect other commercially-oriented distros offer something similar.

It's too early to say, as the method of accounting for 'active user' changed recently.

Seems to me like Lemmy is "consolidating". Some people are leaving but the community is deepening in norms, understanding, commitment and cohesion. This shows up as better content and discussions all the time. Spam is snuffed out quickly, more communities have better moderators. Our infrastructure is maturing and the software is getting better.

The Long Dark.

Survival sim, in an arctic wilderness. It took me two weeks (occasional play only) to trudge through the snow and gather resources to smith some arrowheads for hunting. With that done, food is no longer an issue until my bow wears out. Better scour the forest for the right kind of wood, soon.

Haha yeah it's brutal at first. There is a wiki for the game with maps containing spoilers - that really helps.

The trick with rabbits is you watch where they're going and position yourself infront of them, so they come closer and closer, with no sideways movement. Then they're easy to hit with a stone.

They don't yield much meat so you need other sources too. Once you find a revolver (check wiki map) it gets a lot easier because then you hunt wolves instead of them hunting you.

Initially I was a bit surprised that they were not proposing to seize the entire means of production, only the transport system and land held by the aristocrats.

But I dug into it a bit more - apparently there was very little industrialization in Germany at that time other than the construction of railroads and associated iron + coal mining, which is included in the nationalisation policy. So they were intent on taking over effectively all industrial activity, such as it was.

Some random guest on Russian state TV wants that, according to a translation done by a Ukrainian. Newsweek then goes with "Russian State TV wants", implying endorsement of the idea by the Russian government.

Can you imagine if random Fox News guests were quoted as if they spoke for us? Obviously bullshit, right. That's what this is. Nothing on Russian TV can be taken at face value.

And it wasn't the host of the program that called it wishful thinking, it was the random guest himself only seconds later. Watch the video clip in the tweet embedded in the article to see it.

Trash journalism, Newsweek. But they knew it'd get clicks because apparently I'm the only person here who spent 25 seconds to watch the video and another 25 seconds to think. We need do better than this, people.

The real interesting bit is the "We'll clean them", salivating about ethnic cleansing of all non-Russians. It was a different voice than the guest - I think THAT might have been the host but I can't tell as I don't recognize the people involved.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

To sum up:

  1. Russian TV airs some bullshit.
  2. Ukrainian propagandist carefully selects a tiny segment, puts it into whatever context suits him. Provides translation which no one checks.
  3. US rag misquotes segment and misattributes statements.
  4. We sound off on social media.

Bullshit from start to finish.

My facebook reels are worse than that - endless girls shaken their boobs and ass at me. Most of them look extremely fake and enhanced with AI to make everything bigger. Often there will be a split second scene in the clip (too short to be caught by the censorship system?) of something pornographic. Seems like most of the girls have an Onlyfans.

I don't watch porn or browse thirst traps on instagram or anything. It's nuts.

An April fool's joke that went on too long, probably.

When people post YouTube links, is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube, firefox, or downloading adblockers?

When people post YouTube links… is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube? Because when I click on a YouTube link and I’m on my phone and it immediately gives me an ad it’s pissing me off like in a huge way… is there a way to bypass ads without an ad blocker on my phone
