Heh, it was probably engineered just fine.

But after 5 or 6 layers of corrupt people skimming from the project funds, the builders were probably only left with like 2 bags of Quikrete and some old chewing gum.

Anonymous users are dominating right-wing discussions online. They also spread false information (apnews.com)

The reposts and expressions of shock from public figures followed quickly after a user on the social platform X who uses a pseudonym claimed that a government website had revealed “skyrocketing” rates of voters registering without a photo ID in three states this year — two of them crucial to the presidential contest....

It may come as a shock, but IRL, I’m not an admiral. lol

I think the takeaway here is to be more critical of what’s presented as fact rather than whether it comes from someone (pseudo)anonymous.

Dredging up an old article because this argument is also old:

McD’s workers in Denmark are paid $22/hr + 6 wks paid vacation.

One argument that is frequently brought up against the raising of the minimum wage to $15 is the suggestion that it will have a knock-on effect and the prices at affordable fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Taco Bell will also substantially increase.

In rebuke, many use the price of a Big Mac in Denmark as proof that such claims are unwarranted. On social media, a number of Twitter users state that the cost of a Big Mac is around $5.15, compared to $4:80 in the U.S.—even with the vastly different staff wages.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I wouldn’t say they cost $10, but they’re definitely charging $10 for them.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’ve been out of the loop on fast food prices for a while. Didn’t realize it had gotten that bad.

After covid, I realized I hadn’t eaten fast food for about a year and decided to keep that trend going. The one time I had to stop somewhere to eat (late 2021 I think?), it was more expensive than I remembered and also kind of gross. Not sure if it was always gross and I just didn’t notice or if something changed, but it definitely wasn’t worth it.

Is this a boondoggle or is it actually useful investment? (www.epa.gov)

It seems to me these giant grants to a small number of organizations (Climate United Fund, Coalition for Green Capital, Power Forward Communities) seems like it could be delivering pork to well-connected people. Is this actually going to produce “clean” energy and help disadvantaged people? These seem like very large awards...

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Those organizations are already doing the work the EPA wants done. So funding them is basically like any other government contract. I’ve haven’t read the whole details, but as with most government grants, there are almost certainly strings attached and milestones that need to be met.

It’s essentially the EPA equivalent of NASA funding SpaceX and Boeing.

Some of those exist already with 3rd party UIs. I’m the dev of Tesseract, and it supports these, specifically:

  • Instance-agnostic links (links that don’t pull you into a different instance when clicked)
  • Ability to group communities into a combined feed
  • Basic mod tools (as good as they can get with the current limitations of the API)
  • Better permalink handling for long comment chains (Takes you right to the comment vs parent)
  • Combine duplicate posts from different instances into one (matches on post title and/or URL vs just URL with most UIs)
  • Option to default to “Top” comment sort in settings
  • Allow filtering/blocking by regex patterns (Can filter based on keyword, though I’m working on adding regex as a filtering option)
  • Scroll to top when clicking “Next” page (not really an issue with Tesseract, but pains have been taken to make sure you land back where you left off when clicking into and back out of a post)
  • Easier way to subscribe across instances (can browse other instances and automatically resolve unknown communities and subscribe)
  • Notification badges should update without refresh

The rest are all great ideas, but need API support.

Not trying to plug my UI, specifically, but just using it as a reference for your wishlist. Those are all thing that can be done with the current API without waiting on Lemmy devs to add support. Granted, some of those would be better if the API were handling them versus the frontend, but I was working with what I had lol.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

What made you decide to write it?

Every lemmy ui had some major or minor thing that annoyed me. lol. Wish I had a better answer, but that’s basically it. Credit where it’s due, though. I forked a very early version of Photon to build it, so it’s not 100% me, but it definitely stands on its own now. Both projects have diverged quite a lot since that.

Where can I find out which instances offer that UI?

Not sure. DB0, Literature Cafe, Lemmy NSFW I know used to run it, but not sure if they still do or not. I discontinued it in December after some internal drama happened but have since revived the project. I’ve only released bugfixes to the main branch, but am working on a new release with some visual polish and some requested features.

You can host it yourself if you want and point it to any Lemmy instance. My instance uses it as the default UI, and it’s unlocked to allow connection to any.

I’m in the middle of a complete refactor and hope to have that out in the next few weeks.

Edit: Photon supports a lot of that, too, but not all of the stuff I listed. Lemmy World runs Photon at photon.lemmy.world . It’s nice, but I still prefer my spin on it :)

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I haven’t announced any new releases yet (just pushed bugfixes) but if you’re interested, keep an eye out for 1.3.0 in the next (ideally) 3-4 weeks. I’ve been adding a lot of polish and added Infinite Scroll which is something I didn’t really want to implement but was getting a lot of requests for. Now that I’ve got it added, I don’t hate it lol.

If you’re brave and want to self-host it, the “InfiniteScroll” branch is my “nightly” branch for 1.3.0.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

You’re not wrong xD

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

It’s unfortunate, the invites were stuck in pending for about a week or so.

I think that was fixed a while back. Not sure what version, but I haven’t seen subscriptions stuck on pending for quite some time.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I feel that.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Thanks!

I do have a community for it, but it’s been a ghost town since last year (some internal drama put the project in limbo, and I only revived it a little over a month ago). Currently taking advantage of nobody expecting anything from me right now, lol, and taking time to do a big overhaul of a lot of stuff under the hood and add some needed polish to several areas. Hope to have 1.3.0 ready to release in the next 3-4 weeks (hopefully).

Watch [literally anything] narrated by Armin Shimerman.

Me: Yes, please.

Several years ago, I had just finished my first play through of BioShock when I read online that Armin did the voice for Andrew Ryan. So I immediately started a new game just so I could appreciate it properly.

Eh, I’m biased since I did the same as Gregorum (except I left the replacement text without deleting).

People coming across it later should place the blame where it belongs: Reddit.

Had Reddit not been so disrespectful to the users who made it useful in the first place, then I’d have left my posts/comments up there for posterity. After what they pulled during the API debacle, I absolutely did not want any of my contributions to benefit that company any more.

Sorry for any regular people who got caught in the crossfire, but Reddit made and shat in their own bed.

‘Lavender’: The AI machine directing Israel’s bombing spree in Gaza (www.972mag.com)

ptz ,

Keep AI out of the news. Sigh.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Still a slippery-slope, IMO.

When something (news) is, by nature, designed to inform you of the current state of reality, introducing any process that hallucinates (read: makes shit up) should not be anywhere near them.

People are free to use LLM plugins to “de-clickbait” headlines as they want, but keep that out of the news process itself.

Just my 2 cents on it.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I don’t know how they’re structured / what they really do as a company now, but they do still seem to have a well-regarded news division (or, they at least aggregate quality content).

Well, they used to until I read this. Once they throw this AI nonsense into it, I’m bailing.

ptz ,

to mandate that five of a car’s primary controls — its horn, windshield wipers, turn signals, hazard warning lights and SOS features — will need physical buttons or switches.

Good, but would be great if climate control, volume/mute, and other things that need frequent adjustment while driving were also part of the mandate.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

If you’re implicitly suggesting voice commands or throwing “AI” into the mix, I would dare say that’s worse.

In 2018, Republicans accidentally legalized cannabis. Now 22 AGs want them to undo it (thehill.com)

A coalition of 22 state attorneys general is calling on Congress to address “the glaring vagueness” that has led to legal cannabis products being sold over the counter across the country — including sometimes from vending machines or online....

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

The best thing we can do is deschedule and regulate it.

You should have just stopped there.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I fully expected my state AG to have been one of the signatories on that (they’ve made a big stink about this in the past), but surprisingly they weren’t.

Our legislature did outlaw D8 last year, but somehow it’s still being sold (yay).

There are two companies in-state that rely on this law (Blue Ridge and Thrax). Blue Ridge is ran by veterans, and both would have been affected (read: shut down completely). I don’t know the details, but I want to say they lobbied and I guess are allowed to continue?

My AG is a complete scumbag, but I guess shutting down a family / vereran-run business was too much bad press even for him. The tax revenue is probably just a bonus.

@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

How do you vet videos, though? Do the mods have to watch each of them in their entirety?

A lot of them that get posted are opinion or aren’t from news sources.

Plus, how is a reader supposed to know where the headline comes from when the link is just to YouTube (etc)?

And on a petty note, lol, I’d much rather read the news than have someone read / spoon-feed it to me.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

The URL in the post for the article will indicate the media outlet.

The URL for the video will usually be YouTube or something else that doesn’t make it immediately apparent where it comes from.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Yeah, but you have to click into to even know that.

A lot of people, myself included, just add the info in the headline to our collective knowledge without reading the article or watching the video. I’m not clicking into every video to see who puts it out (a legit source or some whack job casting from their mom’s basement). Having the actual source (via the URL) front and center with the headline goes a long way toward combating misinformation.

I so rarely get to reference this “so bad it’s good” made-for-TV movie: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_Twister

This television film was inspired by a real-life near disaster that had taken place on June 24. 1998, when an F2 tornado hit the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Ohio resulting in the loss of off-site power. Despite that, the film bears no resemblance to the actual events at Davis-Besse.
