    A lot of those are the same troll, and, if it’s any consolation, they’re not very creative.

    Can? Probably. Should? Absolutely not.

    There’s enough batshit insanity already that people are eating up and spewing out.

    The fake play button in the thumbnail image that then links you to a website owned by Meta is unforgivable 😆

    Hawaii is "on the verge of catastrophe," locals say, as water crisis continues (www.cbsnews.com)

    In Hawaii, one of the most important sayings is ola i ka wai, “water is life” — a phrase that not only sums up what it means to exist on an island, but what it means to live, period. But now, one of the largest of the island chain’s land masses is facing a triple threat to its sole freshwater source, and if it isn’t...

    ptz ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    I can’t speak for a long-lived crisis, but about 7 years ago I lived in the boondocks and got flooded-in. Had about a 75-ft radius of dry immediately around my house and the rest muddy flood water. Waters receded after a day or two, but my house relied on well water but had no power for 6 days to be able to pump it. The situation was…not great.

    Cannot imagine the stress of that being a mostly permanent fact of life.

    Okay, nice.

    Article doesn’t say, but did they make more or less than $11 million extra as a result of price fixing during those years? If more, then this is just a business expense.

    80 Percent of Global CO2 Emissions Come From Just 57 Companies, Report Shows (www.smithsonianmag.com)

    A new analysis released last week by the international non-profit InfluenceMap reveals an overwhelmingly unequal share of fossil fuel pollution worldwide. From 2016 to 2022, 80 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions were produced by just 57 companies.

    So the fact that I drive a hybrid†, minimize my overall driving, only buy like 3 tanks of gas a year, have cut out 70% of my beef consumption (yay, Beyond, Impossible, et al), and generally try to reduce or at least minimize my carbon and pollution footprint…means nothing. Great.

    Still going to keep doing my part ‡ even though it’s not even a drop in the bucket.

    † When I bought it, an EV wasn’t practical for my situation. It’s only 6 years old and has plenty of life left, so figure it’s worth it to hang onto it.

    ‡ Yes, I know the whole “carbon footprint” thing is basically victim-blaming propaganda. Doesn’t mean I still shouldn’t try to minimize my environmental impact regardless.

    I tried a few of the federated magazine links they listed, but I can’t resolve them in Lemmy. I know Lemmy doesn’t do person follows (yet?), so if that’s how they’re presented, that makes sense.

    Are they working in Mastodon ?

    ptz ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    Must be a Lemmytation, then. (I’ll see myself out lol).

    ptz ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    That’s what I’ve noticed. At one point, I recall being able to at least search for a Mastodon user from Lemmy and have them come up in search results (no posts and couldn’t follow). I just spot checked that, and it doesn’t seem to do that anymore. I know little about Mastodon so can’t even speculate which side the problem may be on.

    One day I figure it’ll be a two way street.

    ptz ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    Interesting. Could be they’ve never interacted with Lemmy then. I just tried to pull up George Takei’s Mastodon account from Lemmy, and no results. (@georgetakei). I vaguely recall searching for another user in the past (months ago), and they did come up in search. Unless I’m just doing it wrong (always a possibility).

    It’s not really ideal, but I’m not sure if it can be improved considering the radically different structure of each platform.

    Yeah. I don’t know what changes would need to be made to Lemmy to support following users. There is a person_follow table in the DB, though, so maybe the framework is there but incomplete?

    My favorite is sometimes when I’m on hold the announcements tell you to visit their website for faster service (would if I could have!). It reads out the URL to you like “double-you double-you double-you dot this stupid company dot com. Again, that’s double-you double-you double-you dot this stupid company dot com”

    And if you actually type the “www”, you get redirected to the base domain without it.

    worldnews at .ml is a dumpster fire. First community I had to completely scrub from my instance because it was just so toxic from top to bottom.

    Edit: Also, will share my last comment there before I self-banned and purged that cesspit from my instance. This is in reply to someone making a fat joke about Kim Jong Un:

    That’s like that meme post from a few years ago where it’s like (paraphrased):

    Person 1: “I can’t stand homophobes”

    Person 2: How dare you insult Christians like that.

    Person 1: I never said “Christians”. You jumped on that grenade all by yourself.

    I’m of the opinion that you should pick one. If there’s not enough engagement after a respectable period of time, post to another. I definitely don’t think one needs to broadcast their thoughts/opinions out on all frequencies every time.

    ptz OP ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    Uuuuughhhhh. Fine. lol. Take my upvote. 😆

    They also posted it to 70’s music haha.

    ptz OP ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    Lemmy does that in the post view, but not in the feed. The API doesn’t provide xpost data, and the UI has to wrangle those which is imperfect and only works if the posts are retrieved in the same fetch.

    I do usually scroll past, but when there’s half a page of them, I get more than mildly annoyed lol.

    Maybe if you’re seeing too many duplicate links, you’re subscribed to too many duplicate magazines/subs/servers.

    That’s exactly the point. Most people are, too.

    Yep. Though that’s my dev version in the screenshot.

    I don’t want to take over the comments with this, lol. I’ve got a community you can post that in if we want to discuss it further. Community: dubvee.org/c/tesseract

    I think it’s a glitch with the guest instance being set and unable to determine the post ID on the remote instance. When I clicked the first link (https://dubvee.org/post/1007192) in incognito mode, it took me to the expected post (https://tesseract.dubvee.org/post/dubvee.org/1007192) . When I switched guest instance to Lemmy World, and retried the same original link, it did redirect to the wrong link (using the post ID from my instance on LW which doesn’t exist).

    Yeah, I should not have it redirect when you’re browsing as guest since it requires an authenticated call to resolveObject to determine the correct post ID on the remote instance. Should work fine if you’re logged in, though. I’ll address that in 1.3.0.

    Thanks for pointing that out!

    Edit/update: I believe I have this fixed in the 1.3.0 latest dev branch.

    No, you don’t need a second domain.

    You’ll need to register your apex domain with a registrar and then check the option to use custom name servers. The only subdomains you’ll need to configure are the glue records for your ns1 and ns2 name servers.

    ptz ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    Isn’t that what I said? (genuinely asking). That’s exactly how mine are all setup.

    My bad. Didn’t see “second” domain.

    When people post YouTube links… is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube? Because when I click on a YouTube link and I’m on my phone and it immediately gives me an ad it’s pissing me off like in a huge way… is there a way to bypass ads without an ad blocker on my phone

    I’m not sure how Lemmy-UI will handle it.

    When it fetches the metadata for the post Link, that’s the embed_video_url that was returned from Imgur. Lemmy UI may not show the embed video but the thumbnail instead. You can always use image markup in the post body to embed it, though.

    Nice. I read a week or two ago that they were able to coax it into sending a memory dump. It came back a little out of whack, but the data was all there. Glad they were able to make sense of it and come up with a plan. Hope they’re successful.
