Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

What are they going to switch to?

Most orgs will just put up with it because of inertia: existing software that has to work, employee’s having to learn new skills, “sysadmins” who only know Microsoft, etc.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Nothing personal, lol, but I stand by my quotes.

I feel like sysadmins need to be comfortable in multiple environments. I also work with some really crappy ones who only know how to reboot a faulty system or crawl to Microsoft for support. No reviewing logs, no digging in at all, just “welp, a reboot didn’t fix it. Gonna submit a support ticket and make no further effort”.

Arizona Democrats attempt to repeal the state’s 19th century abortion ban (apnews.com)

For a third straight week, Democrats at the Arizona Legislature are attempting Wednesday to repeal the state’s near-total ban on abortions, again spotlighting an issue that has put Republicans on the defensive in a battleground state for the presidential election....

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Arizona Republicans have been under intense pressure from some conservatives in their base, who firmly support the abortion ban, even as it’s become a liability with swing voters who will decide crucial races including the presidency, the U.S. Senate and the GOP’s control of the Legislature.

It’s really telling that what’s best for women isn’t a contributing factor to their decision-making process, just what’s best for the party’s chances at maintaining power. 😠 (yeah, i know, the sky is blue, water wet, etc)

Delta or Jenna?

I haven’t heard much about Delta Burke since the early 90s, but no major controversies come to mind (YMMV).

Jenna definitely, though. lol

Not sure about how the Spanish outlets are covering this, but overall Politico Europe has a high credibility rating and is scored “high” for factual reporting: mediabiasfactcheck.com/politico-europe-bias/

UN labor agency report warns of rising threat of excess heat, climate change on world's workers (apnews.com)

The U.N. labor organization warned Monday that over 70% of the world’s workforce is likely to be exposed to excessive heat during their careers, citing increased concern about exposure to sunlight. It also warned of air pollution, pesticides and other hazards that could lead to health problems including cancer....

Ah, well. Try again next year. lol

Bout as good as having T-Mobile (uses their network). Will definitely vary from place to place, though. Kinda “meh” here since they mostly use band 66 for large cells which has pretty crap penetration into buildings.

ptz OP ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I looked, and it only seems to exist as a temp file somewhere on my phone. I guess I just clicked “Set as wallpaper” years ago and it’s been there since. I cannot find the original on my phone, and my Google searches for that are coming up dry (even reverse image searching from my existing screenshot).

Here’s the closest I can find: deviantart.com/…/USS-Odyssey-NX-94276-322656168

It’s the USS Odyssey (Intrepid Class) but the framing is similar to the one I have as my wallpaper.

ptz OP ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

T-Mobile uses a lot of different bands, depending on the coverage area. Some areas are on 700 Mhz, others on higher PCS bands (former Sprint bands). I used www.cellmapper.net to see what frequencies were used and confirmed with LTE Discovery app on my phone.

In my case, it was band 66 for a fairly large cell. I’ve also got a brick house, so that doesn’t help. AT&T’s 800 Mhz band worked well here but they were jerking around my plan so I switched to Mint.

ptz OP ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

You’ve got many good points, and I’m not defending the Tiktok ban (or whatever technical thing it is), but counterpoint your last one:

Look what Facebook did to the boomers. Do we want to go through that again but with Millennials and Tiktok? Our generation has more experience with social media, granted. Still, that’s part joke and part something I think about as an older, non-Tiktok millennial.

Israel, however, is the matter of getting enough of Rs to vote Yea to outweigh the Maggots. I don’t like it, but the feds spend billions of dollars on tons of stuff I dislike. If allowing a continued genocide in one country means that the same won’t happen in two others…(sigh)

Thank you for actually understanding that there is nuance to all of this. The people screeching about it are rightfully upset, but they seem to completely miss the point that all of these aid packages have to make it through a highly dysfunctional congress.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Again, wasn’t defending the ban. Just addressing the other elephant in the room. :)

But yes, agreed. Critical thinking and media literacy skills are key.

House Speaker Johnson plans to package TikTok legislation with critical aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, and send it to the Senate. President Joe Biden vowed to sign it into law.

So it’s a rider with some important and time sensitive other things that need to pass. Headline is totally (and probably intentionally) misleading.

He could veto it, but it would cause actual harm because those funding bills would have to go back to Congress delaying much needed aid to Ukraine and Taiwan.

If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts?

I have old Facebook and Twitter accounts, maybe some others. I’m old so there’s a MySpace account out there. But I’ve mostly been using reddit the last decade or so, and have migrated to Lemmy. Now, Lemmy is the only social media i use. Recent news got me thinking about this question.

ptz , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Legally, wouldn’t you have to?

When you’re answering the questionnaire, you’re already sworn-in and under oath, so I would assume you’d legally have to. Not sure what the penalty would be, though, but I’m not really interested in finding out.

I guess they’d also have to prove it’s yours, though. Still, even though I use a pseudo-anonymous name online, I don’t post anything I wouldn’t want my real name next to.

Edit: OTOH, you could probably refuse to answer which would likely get you dismissed. IANAL, though. The last time I was summoned for jury duty, they didn’t ask about social media accounts or anything like that. Just a few questions that would have indicated whether I could be impartial.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Yeah, that’s why I added that bit at the bottom. You could probably safely decline to answer, but they’d likely dismiss you for that. Which, if you just want out of jury duty, may be a way to do it lol. Either way, you should definitely not lie and say “no”.
