“I want to say, in all seriousness, that a great deal of harm is being done in the modern world by belief in the virtuousness of work, and that the road to happiness and prosperity lies in an organised diminution of work.” - Bertrand Russell, In Praise of Idleness

I’d rather work than to be forced to post something on vacation.

Apparently that’s what makes something legal/illegal. Whether it pleases corporate shitholes.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek surprised by how much laying off 1,500 employees negatively affected the streaming giant’s operations (fortune.com)

When Spotify announced its largest-ever round of layoffs in December, CEO Daniel Ek hailed a new age of efficiency at the streaming giant. But four months on, it seems he and his executives weren’t prepared for how tough filling in for 1,500 axed workers would be....

praise_idleness ,

Well no shit. If you have zero problems after firing 1500 people at once, that means you were being a terrible manager this whole time.

praise_idleness ,

Ever seen this?

This is the reason why this ban is much needed. Tiktok is literally propaganda machine. If they can be this overt, what wouldn’t they do?

praise_idleness ,

I do not want to be slightest of a Meta/Reddit advocate but domestic companies making political statements/actions, although I persoanlly do not agree, is far different from foreign captial, especially considering where the originating country is.

I’m not even US citizen but what they did was really concerning.

Forcing the sale of one company doesn’t do much but get it out of China’s hands (which… okay fine, this is probably good. We wouldn’t be in this scenario in the first place if congress could do anything to put more control in consumer’s hands in regards to their privacy/content).

fully agree.

praise_idleness ,

Both can be wrong but something can be more wrong.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

That’s disgusting.

I think it’s safe to say that over 99% of custom built pc doesn’t run on proper windows license

praise_idleness ,

I came up with that figure knowing that there are much more 3rd world country people who can’t afford proper PC let alone windows license.

Honestly, considering China/India, I think my figure has to go higher than not.

praise_idleness ,

Which is why I specifically mentioned custom built pc

praise_idleness ,

37% is very hard to believe with custom built PC. I don’t think more than 90% of all PCs are pirated windows machine. That can’t be. Plently of OEMs and laptops alone will break that number.

praise_idleness ,

I meant in a way that most of the people who would actually care to know what an operating system is will be against paying for it.

praise_idleness ,

It’s as if they really did all what those conspiracy nutjobs are saying…

praise_idleness ,

I wish I had the same brainless high hope for something.

I can’t be the only one that hates orange flavored soda.

Not a video gamer myself and can’t love linux enough. No more searching for installers. yay all the way.

Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads and Signal from app store in China (www.washingtonpost.com)

Apple has complied with the Chinese government’s request to remove several popular communication apps from its app store, including WhatsApp, Threads, Signal, and Telegram, due to national security concerns. This action was taken following a directive from the Cyberspace Administration of China. These apps have been crucial...

How is it that you don’t know that open source projects exist and yet on Lemmy?

Lemmy is literally free, as in beer and as in freedom, latter which I don’t think you’ll ever appreciate.

praise_idleness ,

I’m not talking about free services. I’m talking about open services that people can (almost) ultimately trust. We know that Signal can’t do anything about private messages because we know for sure they are encrypted. There are opensource clients too. Aside from having to give them your phone number, the fact that they can’t read any of the strings/media you send through it, is not going to change whether if the server is selfhosted or ran by Meta or Google.

Are you also concerned about MS stealing your data even if a computer has never been connected to the Internet and never will?

praise_idleness ,

Yes.

praise_idleness ,

But that’s shorter than Texas! How hard can it be!

praise_idleness ,

I swear pretty soon they’ll do DRMs at some point.

praise_idleness ,

Free VPN = Shit.

VPN costs money and legal shit. Free VPN works by ripping off few paid users and selling data.

praise_idleness ,

This is exactly why I hate this stupid excusr so freaking much.

praise_idleness ,

I am just surprised how this is legal from the start.

praise_idleness ,

My Radarr alone uses about 250 MB of RAM idle. Considering Pi Zero has 512MB, I don’t think it’s going to work that well with Radarr alone let alone radarr and sonarr…

that's how it works, right? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Description: A three panel comic often referred to as “No take, only throw.” The first panel is a dog biting a toy with the caption “I want to be good at my hobbies.” The second panel is the dog looking angry and refusing to let go of the toy when a hand reaches out to throw it for the dog again, and it has the caption...

praise_idleness ,

I think this a lot too but at the end of the day, it won’t be much fun of a hobby when you don’t even need any practices. Part of having a nice hobby for me is having that moment when all the gradual works pay off.

praise_idleness OP ,

What are you saying? My gitea is my backup!

praise_idleness OP ,

I was aware of forgejo back when I first started hosting Gitea. Didn’t see much of a diff back then so I just went with arguably more popular option at that time.

About few months after it’s mostly just because I’m too lazy of a person.

praise_idleness OP ,

Thank you for letting me know. As you might guess English is not my first language. Always appreciate these inputs.

praise_idleness OP ,

I hate English

praise_idleness ,

yeah. just because they say so doesn’t mean that it’s actually illegal. they all always like to throw those legal threats anywhere they see fit.

praise_idleness ,

makes their product easier to use and to be used however we see fit

Haier: You can’t do that!

praise_idleness ,

Driving is so dangerous that I can’t even believe that it’s this easy to get a license from the first place.

praise_idleness ,

I once made a PR changing a = f(b) from a = “” if b == “” else f(b). About six months later still in pending review. I get that people have their own shit but damn.

edit) Sorry. Clarified the code.

praise_idleness ,
  1. Well that’s just not true, although highly sought for.
  2. Pretty much. Although in hindsight, I’d rather have them absolutely destroy my sleep schedule than ending up getting in to less favorable university than where I got in. My parents were nice enough to not do that but I had to do it to myself.
  3. I mean you can say the same thing about basically any other late stage capitalist countries at this point.
  4. For one and a half year! You learn how to brainlessly comply, something that the society demands from us.
  5. Except that we don’t take them seriously for one bit, even when we really have to.
  6. neighbors are really important, folks.

foods are nice though.

praise_idleness ,

As long as they are getting them from credible sources I don’t see no harm but actually a huge plus for the community. This community is one of the most successful transition-from-you-know-where and huge part of that is thanks to few who posts.

Proton VPN on Linux looks very different from Windows. How do you select one of their P2P options for faster torrenting?

Pretty much what the title says. I noticed that ProtonVPN Linux has an EXTREMELY limited interface compared to their program on Windows. I also do not appear to have the option to bind qBittorrent to ProtonVPN the same way that I did with MullvadVPN. Has anybody experienced ProtonVPN on Linux and successfully used it for...

praise_idleness ,

I recommend you just use gluetun. Way less of a hassle.
