Yeah and it seems obvious that they shouldn’t be driving vehicles where people are laying. This is the third person I’ve heard of being run over by police on a beach this summer.

Does Technology Connections sell shirts? In most of his recent videos he has worn a black shirt with zoomed in RGB pixels from a digital display and I’ve been looking for it everywhere because I work in a related industry.

player2 ,

Thanks, I think the RGB shirt might be custom to him because the same image is his YouTube channel’s profile header image.

Side question: Should’t it also be illegal for Hallie Biden to dispose of an illegal firearm by putting it in a trash can outside a grocery store for a random person to find? That seems like a very irresponsible way to handle a firearm and evidence.

Cultural smells are interesting. In Japan, they find the strong scents of perfume, cologne, and even shampoo that westerners wear to be intolerable and people at restaurants will discreetly ask to change tables to move away from those wearing it. They are more sensitive to fragrances there while Americans have fragrance in almost everything.

Of course, the most respectful thing to do when traveling is to just take a shower and wear a neutral deodorant so that you’re not giving off any unique smells.

This situation sure sounds like it blew up into a racist power trip though.

My friend didn't have a great experience with Linux

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play...

Bark Air, a new luxury airline for dogs, launching flights in May (www.scrippsnews.com)

Why I think this is dystopian: the rich are spending their money to fly their pets on private jets instead of, I don’t know, giving a shit about anyone but themselves. And the government lets them. So, while we gasp at grocery prices, Ivanka Trump’s dog will be flying first class.

player2 ,

Flights in May between New York and Los Angeles will cost $6,000 per dog and human pair, and $8,000 for flights between New York and London for each pooch and parent couple.

Yeah I think they misread that part. Cannabis was moved to schedule 3 which, for example, contains ketamine.

No, that is a common misconception. Most (~85%) companies in China are completely private and just pay taxes. Most of the super large companies (like fortune 500) are partially or completely state owned though. They have embraced aspects of capitalism the last decade, but with checks to ensure that huge corporations don’t control society like in the US.

Downloading/torrenting kids cartoons

Hey all. noob-ish pirate here. Skipping long winded post. I’m struggling to find sources to download/torrent kids cartoons. Some are easy, but I’m looking for paw patrol and it’s scarce on 1337. The more modern stuff and the super popular stuff are a little easier though. Not really any information on the Wiki about this...

Have you tried using the search engine built into qBittorent? For example, here is what it looks like when searching for Paw Patrol S01:

How to install search engines in qB:
makeuseof.com/qbittorrent-add-search-engines/

player2 ,

No problem! When I was picking out which search engines or “plugins” to install, I visited most of the sites on the list and chose the ones I had heard of plus some other ones that looked like they were for English content. Some of the sites were clearly for other languages or for niches like anime, so just pick out whichever ones are relevant to your interests and then you’ll be able to search all of their databases instantly without dealing with their terrible websites and just get the magnet link.

Check out TrackerControl on the F-Droid app store. It lets you block Internet access to individual apps and selectively block trackers and other analytics. It does this by acting as a VPN in the android OS so it won’t work while on another VPN but that’s good enough for my needs.

It is ironic that Chinese-made opioids are a problem in other countries. China tried to ban opium multiple times, but Britain fought multiple wars with them over their right to sell Opium in China, which was Britain’s single most profitable trade at the time.

The British killed civilians and took over Hong Kong so they could control the most important harbor and increase opium imports. This created massive drug trade and eventually domestic opium production.

Exclusive: Tesla scraps low-cost car plans amid fierce Chinese EV competition (www.reuters.com)

Billionaires who once disavowed Trump are coming crawling back (which might have something to do with Biden vowing to raise their taxes) (www.vanityfair.com)

Once upon a time, some überwealthy individuals who’d previously supported Donald Trump declared that they were done with the 45th president of the United States. After January 6, 2021, billionaire GOP donor Nelson Peltz called the insurrection a “stain on America” and publicly apologized for voting for Trump in 2020. Real...

For regular people, an inheritance tax is not great. For the ultra-wealthy it should be mandatory.

Arguments against an inheritance tax:

  • Double taxation: Critics argue that inheritance taxes are a form of double taxation, since the assets being inherited have already been taxed once during the decedent’s lifetime.
  • Hurts small businesses: Family-owned businesses can face hardship if they must be sold off to pay inheritance taxes.
  • Discourages investment: Inheritance taxes can disincentivize people from saving and investing, as they know a portion of their wealth will go to the government.

Arguments for an inheritance tax:

  • Reduces wealth inequality: Inheritance taxes help to redistribute wealth from the very wealthy to the rest of society, reducing income inequality.
  • Prevents concentration of power: By limiting the ability of wealth to be passed on unchecked, inheritance taxes can help to prevent excessive concentration of economic and political power in the hands of a few families.
  • Source of government revenue: Inheritance taxes can be a significant source of revenue for governments, which can be used to fund social programs and public goods.
player2 , (edited )

I think this viewpoint assumes that everyone lives independently. A lot of families function as units and they all live and work together. If you inherit post-tax income from a family member, then the money has been fairly taxed regardless of your viewpoint.

Why should you have to pay the government to inherit your late-parent’s car or business? What happens if you can’t afford to pay the tax?

For the low income families this can make or break a person’s way of life, for the 1% it is a way of hoarding the world’s wealth and maintain power.

player2 ,

Thank you for that information. The article is about a German / Austrian woman so I was summarizing the pros and cons of an inheritance tax which might apply to any country since I don’t know the specifics of their law or why they changed it it.

player2 ,

I’m specifically talking about very low income families since I am talking about the general pros and cons of applying an inheritance tax to all citizens since we are discussing why the inheritance tax might have been removed in Austria / German. I’m not familiar with international tax law to be more specific about income levels so I’m trying ro cover all bases.

If a poor family is sharing a car or a family restaurant, it could be very damaging to have to pay tax on these assets if they don’t have savings.

I understand that this doesn’t apply to families with large assets and I agree that an inheritance tax is generally a good thing when applied progressively.

player2 ,

I agree it needs to be a highly progressive tax. I’m generalizing because we’re discussing international tax law and I don’t know the income cutoffs for different countries.

Double taxation is a real concern only if the inheritance tax affects very low income individuals. A family who shares a car or a struggling family restaurant might have a very difficult time if they are forced to pay an unexpected tax bill.

Humans aren’t the only species on Earth. Mass extinction is bad for everyone living on this planet, mostly the other animals who suffer our destruction. I wish we could just live in equilibrium without killing off every species that isn’t worth farming.

Earth is currently experiencing a sixth mass extinction, according to scientists.

Probably a bit of both? It says that women are having their first child at the age of 33.6, the oldest in the OECD. The older you have a child the more difficulty you will have so they also put money into fertility clinics. This means low fertility rates.

It’s not necessarily a health issue on a mass scale but an economic issue driving people to delay having children until they feel they can handle the responsibility. This causes low birth rates below 1.

Chief enforcer of US gun laws fears Americans may become numb to violence with each mass shooting (apnews.com)

The head of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says he fears that a drumbeat of mass shootings and other gun violence across the United States could make Americans numb to the bloodshed, fostering apathy to finding solutions rather than galvanizing communities to act....

player2 ,

Agreed, guns in public are not as common as this post implies. Additionally, I’m just as scared of a mugger with a knife. Seeing that video of someone drop dead within 3 seconds of being stabbed in the neck is pretty freaky…

player2 , (edited )

Yeah, Texas was the only place that I’ve actually witnessed casual open carry on a regular basis but to their credit I never saw any crime with a gun. However, I know people all over the country who conceal carry and you’d never know it.

I realize this is anecdotal but I witnessed the 2022 Las Vegas mass stabbing outside my hotel that killed 2 and injured 6 people. No one even knew what was happening because it was such a quick and silent attack.

My point is not that guns and knives are comparable, but that it’s silly to feel afraid in the US simply because of guns, generally I’m more scared because of the mental health and wealth inequality crisis causing an increase in apparently crazy people wandering the streets.

“We need to convert all cars to electric ASAP to save the planet!”
“-Wait, not like that!”

Seriously though, when I visited China recently, I was blown away by how many cool cars are there. In the US we have like 3 companies that own the entire market of similar vehicles.

When did weather balloons become national news? Aren’t there always weather balloons floating around the world? Is it just that this one isn’t registered or something?

The article even states that the infamous “Chinese spy balloon” from last year turned out to have no ability to send information back to China and it wasn’t even from the Chinese government, but from a private company, institution, or individual.

Source: The Pentagon and Biden quoted in this post’s article.

nbcnews.com/…/us-monitoring-high-altitude-balloon…

Maybe I got the previous balloons mixed up. The article on this post states:

Though the Pentagon eventually concluded the balloon did not transmit information back to China, its presence put the U.S. military on high alert for other objects in U.S. airspace. Fighter jets shot down several unidentified objects over the U.S. and Canada over the following weeks.

The military couldn’t find any debris from those objects, and the search was called off due to dangerous weather conditions. Mr. Biden said the unidentified objects were not believed to be connected to China’s spy balloon program.

“The intelligence community’s current assessment is that these three objects were mostly balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research,” the president said. .

That is a common misconception and not true. You probably hear about some large state-run enterprises but >84% of businesses in China are private. Today there are several times more private businesses in China than in the US. I work closely with someone who owns their own business in Shenzhen and it doesn’t sound that different than in America.
