Second that, I’m hosting my catch-all through Migadu. They support it on their cheapest tier, and it works with no issue.

jonne ,

That’s why they’re stuck making concepts instead of actual products.

jonne ,

It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t also give them more weight in the algorithm. Any time you load a thread with more than a few comments, there’s like 5 trolls on top with bullshit comments.

jonne ,

Twitter can do whatever the hell they want on their own website. They have no obligation to be fair in whatever they decide to boost or hide (with the exception of outright illegal content, obviously).

Russia is preparing for a long war (en.thebell.io)

Russia’s war in Ukraine is already in its 17th month. In that time, President Vladimir Putin has clearly demonstrated that he is not bothered by losses — whether they be financial, material, or human. His war will go on as long as he needs. And, judging by how the authorities have woven the so-called “special military...

jonne ,

Russia’s committing way more resources into this conflict than they ever did for previous similar operations though. Ukraine is claiming they killed/wounded over 200000 Russian soldiers. That’s not anywhere near comparable to previous post WWII conflicts.

Meta Just Proved People Hate Chronological Feeds (www.wired.com)

Meta conducted an experiment where thousands of users were shown chronological feeds on Facebook and Instagram for three months. Users of the chronological feeds engaged less with the platforms and were more likely to use competitors like YouTube and TikTok. This suggests that users prefer algorithmically ranked feeds that show...

jonne ,

Yep, exactly. With a chronological feed, I can scroll until I know I’m caught up. The algorithmic feed keeps throwing stuff at you and you’re never ‘caught up’. So yeah, great for engagement, but they didn’t actually ask the users how they felt about it.

jonne ,

Yep, I basically stopped using Facebook when it changed away from that. It also changed in other ways, in that people would be posting about politics and memes instead of just life updates and holiday pictures.

jonne ,

I wouldn’t be opposed to some sort of recommendation algorithm, but it should be in a separate section. Especially for new users it’s hard to find people/lemmits to follow, so it would be useful for that.

jonne ,

He really dimmed any room he walked in.

jonne ,

The rules set by the registrar are that any ml domain needs to be used for something relating to Mali. Presumably you could run a Lemmy instance that has a focus on Malian content and keep using the domain within the rules, but the way Lemmy.ml was using it was obviously not.

jonne ,

The server wasn’t raided, the person being raided had an unencrypted backup of the instance database on their personal computer, which got seized in a raid unrelated to the Mastodon server.

jonne , (edited )

Yeah, how the hell do you fit a 745 mile battery in a 5m car?

jonne ,

I’m amazed how many people are still sticking with it despite everything.

jonne ,

Yep, you’ll notice there’s always solidarity between capitalists, despite all their talk about competition and free markets.

jonne ,

They did issue a fine of a whopping $250.

jonne ,

It’s almost like corporations and the wealthy have outsized control over politics.

jonne ,

Yep, for the wealthy it’s just the cost of doing business.

jonne ,

The US was actually funding research in the Wuhan institute through the NIH. It makes sense, as the caves in that Chinese province are home to the bats that have corona viruses like the original SARS and possibly covid-19.

Linux for Microsoft Surface devices. It is reality! (cloudblogs.microsoft.com)

I would like to share with you a very cool project that develops drivers for correct operation of Microsoft Surface devices on Linux. I myself use Surface Pro 6 with these drivers and everything works like a charm (battery life is good, cameras work, stylus, keyboard, touchscreen, screen). The developers are gods. From myself, I...

jonne ,

That’s actually very tempting. I always liked the form factor of the surface but I didn’t want windows for it.

jonne ,

Watch him ban every mention of Signal or Telegram as well when people try to get around the DM issue.

jonne ,

Yeah, pay the people that are already being paid to post by right wing think tanks. Genius idea.

jonne ,

Unfortunately hard to do without free/cheap API access. Looks like both Twitter and Reddit want to make it hard for researchers to work out where the biases in moderation really are, while throwing some selective internal documents to some journalists in their camp.

jonne ,

Who’s keeping their baby in their cot naked? This makes no sense.

jonne ,

They never were. You only think that because philanthropy has always just been an exercise in PR. If you dig deeper into the life and actions of those individuals, you will notice they all suffer from the same pathology.

jonne ,

But not filthily.

jonne ,

Are people really upset about it? To me it was always pointless, and the few times I got gold and was allowed to peek into r/lounge it was just full of the most insufferable users (just people that thought they were special because they got gold).

jonne ,

The wear and tear on my furniture is negligible compared to car/bicycle maintenance and public transport costs.

jonne ,

I had it on PC, it was definitely fun, but with some events like surfing it was sometimes hard to tell what was going on on a monochrome display.

Especially surfing didn’t make sense to me at all, having no concept of what a pipeline was.

The dominance of cat content VS dog content on Lemmy reflects its current techie userbase

I originally joined Reddit in 2011, and in the beginning it was dominated by cat content. It was rare to see a post about dogs. Sometime in the mid 20-teens this phenomenon reversed. It’s always been a “pet theory” of mine that this reversal was due to Reddit becoming mainstream, and that it’s initial nerdy/techie user...

jonne ,

C/petfree, where you can complain about society pressuring you to have pets you don’t want.

jonne ,

I think the best middle ground might be where there’s a bunch of separate apps that all have their own default server, where they hide most of the fediverse complexity from the user. They’d still all be accessing the same content, but it would just be simpler for ‘normal’ users.

jonne ,

Yeah, I’m 3/3 for that description

jonne ,

The sign up process is kind of user hostile (or at least was a couple of months ago, they improved it a lot). People don’t really want to have to figure out which server to sign up to if they barely know what a server is.

They’re probably not talking about the actual conversations on Mastodon (although there’s definitely some condescension there, like if you dare to post an image without alt text they’ll come out).

jonne ,

Oh thanks. I used to see them pop up on Reddit and never really got what it was about.

jonne ,

That’s exactly how you get wealthy. Screw anyone you can, threaten them with eternal lawsuits, and you can get a huge discount on labour and other costs. Trump was famous for pulling the same shit.

jonne ,

Put them in a vase with some water, and they’ll stay green for weeks, that way you have some for next time. And you can basically add them to pretty much any dish.

jonne ,

I accidentally signed up for prime that way, and it was a pain to cancel. This shit should definitely be illegal.

jonne ,

I’ve personally fallen for this, it works and it’s intentional. Anything that tricks a user into clicking on something they didn’t mean to is a dark pattern and asshole design.

jonne ,

There “cancel any time” is definitely clickable. It signs you up to Amazon prime with one click.

jonne ,

Will it still work after the API changes though? I’m assuming whomever runs that bot doesn’t want to pay through the ass to continue posting.

jonne ,

How does jellyfin compare to Kodi and Emby? I’ve been using Emby for the last couple of years and it’s fine, but I wonder if I’m missing out on any features.

jonne ,

Yep, the shared clipboard and file sharing options are things I can’t live without now. No more sending stuff to yourself using messenger apps or stupid workarounds like that.

jonne ,

I don’t really get why some YouTubers keep a schedule to begin with. I’m fine with them coming out with content whenever they have something, it doesn’t have to be the same time of the week every week. It’s not TV, I’m fine with waiting.

jonne ,

A lot of people seem to be going to blue sky, but I don’t really see what the point is of moving to something else that’s run by a single company again. Mastodon seems better when it comes to future proofing.

Their resistance to anything that resembles a discovery algorithm kind of sucks tho. I know they can be bad in the wrong hands, but it would be nice to see who else is on there and what everyone is talking about.

jonne ,

Red Hat weren’t ever unprofitable under the old model. This is just the classic killing of the goose that lays the golden eggs. They’ll get a short term boost in profit until customers start moving to competitors.

jonne ,

Not to mention, you can’t have a percentage go up and blame it on inflation.
