I quite like the originals. While I’m big fan of spicy stuff (I get one level down from maximum spicy at a local Indian place), I tried x2 and saw a glimmer of what people might like about it, but it was a step too far for me, where it lost flavor for the sake of spiciness. x3 has got to be straight battery acid. I don’t know how any human can buy those saying “Yep, this is the level I enjoy.”

Joined Lemmy.ml because it was supposed to be a security, privacy and FOSS focused community

Yep that’s the line the developers put up there to lure people in. It’s mildly disingenuous at best. Having to copy a line from a document titled “The Principles of Communism” just to sign up should’ve tipped you off that something was a bit weird.

Join an instance that has more lax federation standards and subscribe to the ml communities you care about, or get comfortable with defederation and people from other instances discarding your opinions. It’s a choice you need to make.

joenforcer ,

I was trying to point out the hypocrisy of branding your instance to be about privacy and security when tankie-glorified regimes don’t respect that at all, and they’re instead mildly pushing people in that direction. Why not use something from the EFF pages on those topics? Nice strawman, though.

Went under about two years after the crowdfunding. Guess people didn’t want to pay $2 a pop for chilled and filtered tap water.

joenforcer ,

This is such a Lemmy take, good god.

“Cloudflare has been around for over a decade and doesn’t do anything nefarious with my data and have never shown any intention of doing so… but, consider this for a moment… what if they DID?”

Oops, I’ve got a citation for you.

I know the response will be what you already said in a previous comment about companies saying “trust us bro” so I’ll take the L on this one.

joenforcer ,

Unless you’re planning on installing the panels yourself, the price is actually going up now because the labor component of the installation is growing faster than the equipment prices are declining. Furthermore, many utilities are trying to enact regressive metering policies that will make ROI nearly impossible to achieve over the life of the panels.

The best time to install was the year the IRA was signed into law. The second best time is now.

How do you know if someone is a Linux user? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. Lump them in with Vegans and Crossfitters.

joenforcer ,

My friend ordered an omelette without the eggs before, and it worked. A server wouldn’t sell me a double shot of Jager because it was “too much alcohol” but had no problem selling me two single shots at once.

All depends on how accommodating your server is.

joenforcer ,

Ah yes, let’s link up a college town with a bunch of drunk kids with a complete lack of inhibition and a similar perceived lack of consequences. It will surely work great.

joenforcer ,

All the death from COVID was just “fun crazy”, eh?

joenforcer ,

Talk to your instance or your client. I see it just fine.

joenforcer ,

Yep. If your instance defederates from certain instances that others don’t defederate from, you won’t see comments from those defederated servers that others might still be able to see and interact with. This is the curse of a decentralized system where every node can make up their own rules.

joenforcer ,

Lemmy moment. Isn’t federation great?

joenforcer ,

Four*. FICO is another one and at one time was most commonly used for home mortgages. Not sure how true that is today, but it’s still very much in use.

joenforcer ,

I think you’re confusing her with Nancy Pelosi.

Elizabeth Warren has introduced legislation to prevent members of Congress from trading stocks.

joenforcer ,

Given what I know about Senator Warren and her political career, especially the fact that she is one of the very few that isn’t actually doing it despite the opportunity and is trying to prevent it at the same time? Yeah, I’m pretty sure.

joenforcer ,

You’re right. But, the Fediverse is ActivityPub, and Threads is using ActivityPub, therefore Threads is part of the Fediverse.

The beauty of the Fediverse is you can defederate from whoever you want. But don’t confuse that with thinking that you can change the definition and rules of what the Fediverse is.

joenforcer ,

They can’t bother you if you block them.

For example I just blocked the entire Linux lemmy.ml community 1 minute ago.

joenforcer ,

Don’t forget about DeadJournal for the emo/edgy kids!

joenforcer ,

This feels like a hasty “solution” to an invented “problem”. Sure, Wikipedia isn’t squeaky clean, but it’s pretty damn good for something that people have been freely adding knowledge to for decades. The cherry-picked examples of what makes Wikipedia " bad" are really not outrageous enough to create something even more niche than Wikia, Fandom, or the late Encyclopedia Dramatica. I appreciate the thought, but federation is not a silver bullet for everything. Don’t glorify federation the way cryptobros glorify the block chain as the answer to all the problems of the world.

joenforcer ,

Calling out a government for flagrant propaganda has nothing at all to do with race.

joenforcer ,

If the government told me that my “score” dictating my ability to participate in society would be greatly affected based on what I thought of the government, I’d support the heck out of that government too.

joenforcer ,

To be fair, I tested this question on Copilot (evolution of the Bing AI solution) and it gave me an answer. If I search for “those just my little ladybugs”, however, it chokes as you describe.

joenforcer ,

Sir, this is Lemmy. Everything bad past, present, and future is the fault of capitalism.

Oh yeah, everything bad is the fault of cars too. Almost forgot that one.

joenforcer ,

GDPR is no joke. Storing a handful of comments is not worth the penalty if they get caught.

Note that I speak from experience as part of a company that needs to comply with the regulations. We do it because the risk of violation is 10000000% not worth it no matter how annoying and arduous it is to comply.

joenforcer ,

Worth it how? I feel like every post that claims about how much better Linux is after handling a bunch of tweaks and hacks and workarounds to get into baseline functional doesn’t really get into what actually makes it better. After all of that heavy lifting, you’re already at a disadvantage and I still hear nothing of the benefits. I start to wonder if the “better” is justification for all the effort that goes into tricking it to work rather than being meaningfully superior.

joenforcer ,

Ignore this guy. I’m seeing a lot of “both sides bad” hot takes lately and I get the feeling we’re seeing a lot of seeds of doubt disinformation spreading like we got back in 2016. Abandon the troll, he can’t vote anyway.

joenforcer ,

Nobody said any of that. Get over your persecution complex.

joenforcer ,

Remember all the circlejerking about how Lemmy was kinder than Reddit? Nah it’s the same maybe worse, with a heavy heaping of communism sprinkled in.

FTC bans TurboTax from advertising ‘free’ services, calls it deceptive (www.cnn.com)

The Federal Trade Commission ruled in a final order and opinion Monday that TurboTax, the popular tax filing software, engaged in deceptive advertising and banned the company from advertising its services for free unless it is free for all customers....

joenforcer ,

Freshbooks, then just rename the shortcut.

joenforcer ,

Cash App acquired their tax services from Credit Karma, which was highly regarded as a free service. No idea how it is now, but its predecessor was good.

I buy Monero to have freedom from being watched by banks and governments.

Enshittification exclusively defines online platforms. Stop using it for everything.

joenforcer ,

It’s almost never broken. I have only been turned away for a broken machine one time ever, and McFlurries are more or less a monthly treat.

Sorry to break the internet meme, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t all that common.

joenforcer ,

I don’t think they’re problematic, but as a slightly above average height American male, I feel like my hands skew towards the smaller side of average which makes a difference. I have no problem with the joycons attached to the console, and I’m also a big fan of the pro controller. A friend of mine who is notably much taller bought me pro-like third party joycons for Christmas and they hurt my hands to use in contrast to the OG that don’t bother me at all.
