My first reaction was… who?

But I think that’s the point. He’s a nobody yes-man who won’t exercise any influence that could challenge Trump. Learned that lesson with the last pick, who wouldn’t even commit some light treason to illegally keep Trump in power.

Fair enough - not really the circles I run in so I really wouldn’t know.

The middle class part makes sense. You have to be someone who both owns their own property and also has significant leisure time.

AI is overhyped and unreliable -Goldman Sachs

https://www.404media.co/goldman-sachs-ai-is-overhyped-wildly-expensive-and-unreliable/

"Despite its expensive price tag, the technology is nowhere near where it needs to be in order to be useful for even such basic tasks"

@technology

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I remember saying a year ago when everybody was talking about the AI revolution: The AI revolution already happened. We’ve seen what it can do, and it won’t expand much more.

Most people were shocked by that statement because it seemed like AI was just getting started. But here we are, a year later, and I still think it’s true.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I’m not saying that there won’t one day come a better technology that can do a lot more. What I’m saying is that the present technology will never do much more than it is already doing. This is not an issue of refining the technology for more applications. It’s a matter of completely developing a new type of technology.

In areas of generative text, summarizing articles and books, as well as writing short portions of code in order to assist humans, creating simple fan art, and meaningless images like avatars, and those stock photos at the top of articles, Perhaps creating short animations, Improving pattern recognition of things like speech and facial recognition… In all of these areas, AI was very rapidly revolutionary.

Generative AI will not become capable of doing things that it’s not already doing. Most of what it’s replacing are just worse computer programs. Some new technology will undoubtedly be revolutionary in the way that computers were a completely new revolution on top of basic function calculators. People are developing quantum computers, and mapping the precise functions of brain cells. If you want, you can download a completely mapped actual nematode brain right now. You can buy brain cells online, even human brain cells, and put them into computers. Maybe they can even run Doom. I have no idea what the next computing revolution will be capable of, but this one has mostly run its course. It has given us some very incredible tools in a very narrow scope, and those tools will continue to improve incrementally, but there will be no additional revolution.

I am not sure that you can link to an individual comment, but you can link to the community mod log or the user mod log depending on the circumstance. Or you can link to the individual comment in the thread, even if it has been removed.

It is preferred to reach out to a moderator(s) by direct message, in which case you could include a screen image of the mod log along with your question.

I understand why one may have an interest in asking questions publicly, although it makes is very difficult for mods to respond (unless you tag us). If you are interesting in getting a response, this is perhaps the least efficient way. We are assured to see report, and likely to see a DM in a much more reasonable time.

We generally remove very little, but this situation that has led to a very high volume of rule breaking content. We also tend to discuss edge cases to sometimes avoid removal, but again, the volume of reports and rule breaking content did not offer that luxury. All decisions can be appealed by messaging a mod.

MBFC has a team of multiple writers and researchers - hardly a one-person “hobby.” They are highly rated by other organizations like Snopes, Newsguard, NPR, Reuters Fact Chek, etc.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

MBFC has been studied by independent researchers.

Cited by NPR, Reuters Fact Check.

Newsguard analysis (perfect score from a competitor): https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c9aed2c1-0711-45eb-af26-459c916a3cda.webp

Thank you for motivating me to research this - I learned that MBFC is actually far more reliable and trusted by the news industry and scientific community than I realized.

[META] A few words about Bots and Civility

Given the state of technology, politics, and social media, we all share fears about interacting with bots, or having our social media manipulated. We know that this is happening on other platforms that are driven by engagement/profit models. However, Lemmy is about people – like you! While this platform is not immune to bots,...

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Most of what you describe would be a case by case basis. This post applies specifically to calling another user a bot or a shill. Pointing out intellectual dishonesty or hypocrisy can be a part of normal discourse and can be done in a way that respects the civility of the conversation. Some of what you describe could be in violation of other community rules, depending on the details.

The best thing to do if you’re unsure about a particular situation is to report it, and mods will review it. You can always message one of us about a situation if you are not sure or require additional clarification. People are allowed to disagree with one another, even vehemently, as long as they do so within the rules of the community.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

If you are speaking of Lemmy as a whole, that is a pretty philosophical question.

Misinformation is a violation of the rules of this community and will be removed.

Your username is fine. Our moderation team did investigate and were unable to find any substance to the claim that it is connected to white supremacy.

The comment about a haiku was removed because it was a way of accusing another user of being a bot, which violates the rules of the community.

Your reply was removed as trolling due to the fact that you were impersonating a bot by complying with the inappropriate request.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

The comment has been restored. I appreciate the explanation.

Please do not reply to comments that include “ignore previous instructions” or other rule breaking content. Hopefully people will calm it down with the paranoia and dehumanizing argumentation and we can have fun with things like this again!

Although Wikipedia is occasionally prone to group-think, and the editing process is truly Byzantine, it is also one of the most indispensable projects on the internet. this diatribe reads a little like: Why are you so obsessed with me?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Monsters. How can anyone possibly believe that the “let’s make it harder to vote” side are the good guys?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

That is exactly it. Antisemites figured out a while back that they could say whatever they want about Jews as long as they swap out the word Zionist. This has been a feature of white supremacy for ages. It used to be “people with big noses” or “people who wear hats” or even “bankers,” or “globalists.” The latter two are more similar to the use of “Zionist” because they represent actual groups that people criticize. That gives more cover to the actual antisemites.

This is actually a good thing, because it removes that cover from bigots who want to hijack the movement and hide behind it.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Who said anything about banning it? You can read the full statement here. As I said, this is about bigots co-opting the word to say bigoted shit, taking into account the nuance of how a word can be used or misused. Literally no one other than propagandists are talking about Meta “banning” the word.

We do not allow content that attacks people on the basis of protected characteristics such as nationality, race, or religion, among others. We do allow people to criticize adherents of political affiliations and ideologies.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, let’s hope so!

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It is specifically not that. It’s about people misusing the term “Zionists” to refer to Jews, which is also a thing that happens.

The complete statement is here if you want to see it. The posted article does a pretty poor job explaining it.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, but I believe that terror groups (such as the KKK, Proud Boys, GDL, ISIS/Daesh, NJP, Patriot Front) should not be allowed unlimited free reign to spread their message and recruit followers but that’s just me. I understand the argument for unlimited free speech on every platform, but I happen to disagree.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Unpopular opinion: people who think federated platforms shouldn’t deal with money are just people who want someone else to pay for them.

Mastodon handles lemmy communities a bit strangely, doesn't it?

I know that communities don’t translate well to Mastodon, I just find it a little odd how it seems to be a firehose of all comments in a community when viewed in Mastodon. I was expecting it to “repost” posts submitted to the community and have comments in the replies to those posts. Just something odd I was thinking...

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It is definitely strange to be on a small server. I’ll be like, “wow! This post has 67 likes!” Meanwhile if I view it from a large server it will actually be 1.4k

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Not at all. You can still search and see everything that you federate with, but posts, likes, etc. will not populate on your server automatically unless you follow them. Otherwise, the entire fediverse would have to populate every minute on your personal server. I don’t know how Lemmy handles that.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks that’s actually a pretty helpful metaphor

'He's the guy who beat Trump': Rep. Dean on why she wants Biden to stay in race (www.pbs.org)

Democratic Rep. Madeleine Dean is from the critical swing state of Pennsylvania. She hit the campaign trail with President Biden over the weekend and as other House Democrats are asking him to drop out of the race. Rep. Dean joined Geoff Bennett to discuss her support.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

If you ignore all the BS marketing, it really is amazing how much Biden has done in his first term, even more than Obama.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It’s true that Biden really put her in a corner. She hasn’t really been able to differentiate herself in a meaningful way, and maybe that was strategic. It’s not that uncommon for vice presidents, but usually there is at least some distinctive role or signature issue that the VP works on.

Biden acted as an informal whip in Congress and as a diplomat in some international issues as VP. Pence acted as a media surrogate to the religious right, and as an advisor on appointments. I think he was once considered the most powerful VP of all time.

Harris reminds me of Veep, the Julia Dryfus show. I can’t recall a single signature issue or import role she has played in the past four years.

Yuuuup. If you have never called your senator or met with your representative, if you’ve never been to a city council meeting, then you are a part of the problem. This site is full of smart, hardworking, passionate people. We should be the ones in local offices.
