At the rally, Sarandon said: “There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country.”

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Just now hearing about this.

So she basically said antisemitism is okay because Islamophobia exists. Like, “well, if we can’t stop racism, let’s at least be racist against everyone.” Maybe the worst take in the past 2 months of incredibly bad takes.

This is coming from a white, cisgender person who is neither Jewish nor Muslim, and is worth $60 million ($10 million she made since the start of the pandemic)

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

According to what I’ve read just now, she said that amid the vile attacks against Jews in America “people that are afraid of being Jewish at this time are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country.”

This: a. Minimizes the violence against Jews and Jewish Gathering places right now b. Makes Jewish suffering secondary to the “real” suffering of Muslims c. Denies the tragic history of antisemitism in America d. Pits Jews and Muslims as two parties somehow against each other, when in reality, both groups suffer whenever racism in America goes unchecked e. Portrays antisemitism as a means to an end - that cold, unfeeling Jews could not possibly understand the suffering of Muslims

Your suggestion that anyone offended by this is paid by some secretive corrupt cabal of globalist to do so…

Freedom for Catalonia! They voted 90% in favor for independence, Spain’s government claimed that the vote invalid, then jailed the politicians who organized the referendum.

What’s your source for the original claim that Israel is an ethnostate?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

We absolutely are. Defining Judaism as a religion alone is ignorant and christocentric.

Judaism has always been a people of a singular national identity, defined by common origin, language, history, sense of identity, culture, folklore, music, clothing, cuisine, etc.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Fair enough. Not sure the best way to translate the concept of עם ישראל

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

So, before 2018 when the controversial law was passed (not sure what you mean happened last week) you believe that Israel was not an ethnostate?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

This is exactly the reason why a majority of Israelis did not support the law, and it received significant criticism from broad Israeli groups on the right and left, Jewish, Druze, and Arab.

It’s also why it’s essentially never been enforced.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Israel is just as ethnically diverse as those you’ve listed. Druze, Arabs, Armenians, Bedouins, Samaritans, Turks, etc. in a nation of less than 10 million.

gedaliyah , (edited )
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Israel is also a pluralistic society, in which all citizens (a quarter of which are not Jewish) are guaranteed complete equal rights under the law. There are multiple Arab parties in the parliament (Knesset).

Can you explain why France has a greater number of Arabic speakers than Israel but no Arabic language schools, while Israel has hundreds of state funded Arabic language schools that parents can choose to send their kids?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Are you high? What ethnic group is Ra’am? What ethnic group is Ta’al?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

So Israel is an “apartheid state” except that minorities have full rights of citizenship, vote, serve the government, hold positions of leadership in government, academia, business and medicine. But minority parties, representing a minority population, don’t have more power? Are you even vaguely aware of how democracy works? And you think I’m the one being disingenuous?

Surprised that I don’t see more people talking about listservs. There was a time when email was cool. It wasn’t just regular mail, it was electronic mail. It was instantaneous. It was free postage. It was global.

Before the spammers and the scammers, email was the future of communication. Lots of random sites offered free email. No one was mining data. It was just a cool thing that you could basically already do if you set up a server anyway that didn’t really add cost. Low bandwidth meant no one was pumping out a crazy number of emails, and there was no video or audio to speak of online except in very niche uses.

So the listserv was born. A way to send and share information to your entire social network (before the term social media was even conceived). People would have years-long discussions, sometimes even threaded within the multiple layers of replies (before we knew what threaded meant). You would spend hours or even days composing witty, insightful, humorous replies before sending it out to the list. You would open your text-only email client each day with bated breath to see the latest news and group drama… and what new corners of the web people were exploring (it was already called the web - that’s practically ancient history). Hyperlinks were among the first pieces of complex formatting that people used regularly, although it was not unheard of to write out a URL by hand on a pad of paper and then manually type it into Netscape.

So websites were discovered and shared. Most people belonged to multiple listservs and so would share and reshare. Presto: dancing hamsters!

@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yahoo was massive. It was the first attempt to organize the web. There was no algorithm per se, but there were endlessly nested categories that sites would self-select. It wasn’t really worth it then to game the system (or at least if people did I never heard of it). You wanted to be categorized correctly so that you could be found.

Yahoo was never as dominant as Google would become. There were alternatives like webcrawler, Lycos, altavista, etc. But they mostly just used a sort of brute force search; any website that contained your keyword(s) would show up and the site that contained the most keywords would show first.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I remember hearing about Google for the first time… how does it work? What do you mean there are no categories? How do you find something? Oh, it uses a link-based system of ranking? So if I search for puppies, it won’t just look for sites with the word “puppies,” but also at the sites that they link to and from? Oooh if a site mentions puppies, and a lot of other sites that mention puppies also link to it, then it is probably an important site when it comes to puppies?

But how did they make it work? They downloaded a complete copy of the internet? That must have taken a googol of bytes!

how do you even use twitter?

I’m not actually using twitter, just never got into it, but now that I’m trying out mastodon, idk if I’m just too old now but I don’t… get it. I just can’t seem to engage with anyone, the UI seems confusing and counterintuitive, I don’t seem to have the context to get into this type of website, can someone tell me...

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I always tell people that mastodon is more like a garden than a grocery store.

It will not automatically start serving you any content because there is no algorithm.

If you want to begin to cultivate your feed, you should search for topics that interest you, especially using the hashtags. Post an introduction with hashtags (there are guides for doing this online). Then start following everyone who posts something interesting. If you find out later that they are not posting the type of material you are interested in then you can always unfollow in there no hard feelings. You can also follow or mute individual hashtags.

Most importantly, Mastodon is actually a social network. Reply to the people you follow, like and boost, boost, boost! Plan to be a participant in the conversation.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly! It surely can’t be harder to fight 30,000 embedded terrorists than 8 scattered terrorists in hiding.

I think Israel should give them supplies to continue operation until they can be evacuated. And also Israel should give them notice of evacuation weeks in advance so they can prepare. And Israel should be expected to provide alternate medical care.

I’ll be honest, there was a time when Edge was a really nice browser. Probably the best of the chromium browsers. I know that. Do you think that this is evidence that

Hamas… changed their charter in 2017 to only demand a return to 1967 borders.

It is obviously not.

It only acknowledges that Hamas will not oppose such a plan if it is approved by the Palestinian people, along with the specific conditions listed. The document outlines that the long-term demand is irrevocably all of the land from The River To The Sea as a State of Palestine and no State of Israel whatsoever.

It’s unambiguous.

But you already saw that because you have read the document. I’m no longer addressing these comments to you, but to the people who’ve actually read this far in the thread and are interested in learning, rather than propaganda.

So let’s look at those specific conditions listed. According to the 2017 charter, who are the “refugees and the displaced?” You might reasonably think that refers to the 700,000 Palestinians who were displaced by the 1948 war. No, as the charter specifies, it is any of the 6.4 million people who can identify at least one Palestinian ancestor. That is over 60% of the current population of Israel. It includes third-generation Americans and Europeans. It includes most members of Hamas.

And what is Israel supposed to do with this 65% increase in population? Again, it’s specified in the charter. Israel must “return their homes,” meaning provide a physical house for every family at no cost. Additionally, Israel must pay unspecified reparations. There is no amount of reparations that would be acceptable in place of a physical house in Israel, nor any other tolerable location.

To reiterate, Hamas will temporarily recognize a Palestinian State within the 1967 borders

If and only if

Israel agrees to absorb 6.4 million people into a population of under 10 million (including members of Hamas), buy them each a house, pay them additional reparations, and give up any claim on Jerusalem or the 5 holiest sites in Judaism.

Again, this is not my opinion, it is all laid out in the charter itself.

The belief that Hamas is anything other than a terrorist organization intent on eliminating the only Jewish-majority state in the world, is just not borne out by any version of reality.

Meanwhile, Israel has peacefully turned over more land and resources than the entire current area of the State in exchange for peace with neighbors. Israel has offered Palestinian leaders nearly every inch of the land of Palestine, but every offer has been rejected by the Palestinian leaders. Don’t be confused by Propaganda.
