Both middle school and high school in Denmark are required to use computers for Danish, English, German etc exams. It’s used for essays and other tests. It’s been like this since the early 2000.

drudoo ,

I’ve used it for 5 years on iOS with zero issues at all. Set it to ‘Move’ and you will get great resolution.

drudoo ,

Lots of people saying mealie or tandoor, so I’ll say Grocy. I don’t use it for every single food item but mainly for spices and frozen items and the recipe functionality is pretty good.

Sucks that it isn’t available in the ios app though.

drudoo ,

Isn’t gramps a desktop app? It would make more sense to use Webtrees when using a VPS, which can be accessed over the web with login.

drudoo ,

I have two main issues:

  1. The appletv app isn’t as smooth and fast as plex. It is hard to convince my wife to switch when the user experience is not as good.
  2. No profile fast switch. Unlike any other streaming service (Plex included) jellyfin doesn’t offer a list of profiles on startup to select who’s watching. This is a huge issue for me, as my wife, son and I uses the same devices with our own profiles.
drudoo ,

Yes. I’ve tried all the available clients.

drudoo ,

Personally I think nextcloud is bloated with too many extra things. I’ve been using Seafile for 5+ years and it’s been great.

drudoo ,

Take a look at the calculations here www.arqbackup.com/aws-glacier-pricing.html

It explains it a bit better. You have to factor in how many requests you need too. So both file sizes and amount of files.

drudoo ,

If everyone you text with are on iPhone anyway, there’s no logical reason to switch iMessage off and use SMS.

Never personally had any issues with iMessage (not sure which parts you think “suck” and are “unstable”).

80% of my contacts use iMessage, the rest use Signal.

Disney+ ignores autoplay settings on tv? (kbin.social)

Hi. Apologies if this is not the correct community. It appears that recently my Disney+ on my Samsung TV has started autoplaying the next episode in a series. But in my profile, autoplay has been turned off. Having autoplay off used to work fine but now it started autoplaying again....

drudoo ,

Auto play on the TV setting or in the Disney+ settings? Never heard of any streaming apps respecting the TV settings. Generally I’ve had to make all changes in the corresponding apps and if they don’t have an option for it, it wasn’t possible. Disney+ has generally had kids profile not autoplay the next episode but adult profiles it does.

Recommendation for home audio system

Looking for a self-hosted home audio system, something like Sonos where you can play music in different zones/rooms and control it from a phone or tablet. Not sure on speakers, maybe something running off of raspberry pi’s or just standalone speakers if that would work. Anyone doing something like this?

drudoo ,

Maybe Volumio can work? It’s some time since I last tried it.

drudoo ,

Love Fira Code but recently switched to typeof.net/Iosevka/ and it’s equally great.

drudoo ,

This is a copy of an older comment of mine:

Everything is tagged and organized using Picard. I use a modified version of community.metabrainz.org/t/…/156.

I’ve been meaning to write a guide for how it works. My current WIP script can be found here: gitea.baerentsen.space/…/Picard.txt

My files is setup like:

~/Music/A/Artist/(YYYY) Title [Type - Format] [MusicBrainz ID]/[side] Title [length][Bandwidth].ext

eg:

<span style="color:#323232;">/Music/Q/Queen/(1973) Queen [12 Inch Vinyl - FLAC] [1783da6a-9315-3602-a488-1738eb733a0f]
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /A1. Keep Yourself Alive [3m48s][320+ 48000KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /B1. Liar [6m26s][320+ 48000KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span><span style="color:#323232;">/Music/B/Bruce Springsteen/(2019) Western Stars [CD - FLAC] [a50ffce7-0532-41a7-b85b-7d02f8c7af00]
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /01. Hitch Hikin' [3m38s][320+ 96000KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /02. The Wayfarer [4m18s][320+ 96000KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span>

if the album isn’t a studio album, theres an extra folder. eg:

<span style="color:#323232;">/Music/B/Bruce Springsteen/Compilation/(1996) The Lost Masters I_ Alone in Colts Neck (The Complete Nebraska Session) [CD - FLAC] [8531e427-495a-443a-8fc3-0dd2ef459c93]
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /01. Nebraska [4m27s][320+ 44100KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span><span style="color:#323232;">/Music/P/Phil Collins/Singles/(1981) In the Air Tonight [7 Inch Vinyl - FLAC] [e805dd53-9257-4c78-8bff-a95f0cdd767e]
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /A. In the Air Tonight [5m29s][320+ 96000KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span>

I have special categories for:

<span style="color:#323232;">Compilations
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Cover
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Tribute
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Singles
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Live
</span><span style="color:#323232;">EP
</span>

If an album contains multiple disks, there’s an extra folder. Eg:

<span style="color:#323232;">/Music/M/Michael Jackson/Compilation/(2004) The Ultimate Collection [CD - FLAC] [2d37b204-ed26-3795-9710-1514f0fd931a]
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /Disc 1
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /01. I Want You Back [3m00s][320+ 44100KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span>

For soundtracks it’s: ~/Music/Soundtrack/T/(YYYY) Title [Type - Format] [MusicBrainz ID]/[side] Title [length][Bandwidth].ext

eg.

<span style="color:#323232;">/Music/Soundtrack/L/(2001) The Lord of the Rings_ The Fellowship of the Ring - The Complete Recordings [Digital Media - FLAC] [cad73ae7-5966-4de1-bad4-4a603891fd27]
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> /Disk 1/01. Prologue_ One Ring To Rule Them All [7m15s][320+ 48000KHz VBR 2ch].flac
</span>

Been using this for 3+ years and it’s solid.

I’ll try and make a better write up at some point and share my script.

This setup also works flawlessly with Plex + Prism. I run Picard in a docker container and access it over web, so it can run on my headless Debian server.

drudoo ,

One is my all time favorite books. The second one is also much better than the movie.

drudoo ,

I really wish they would have stuck 32/64GB storage or something like that on it, so the OS could boot without external reliance. Give the Pi0 8GB and it would be perfect.

I boot my Pi4 and Pi3 from SSD and it’s great but it’s clunky with the SSD and adapter.

I’m seriously considering a N100/N305 mini pc instead of my Pi.

drudoo ,

I’ve had the exact same spectrum setup in Orlando and I just gave up connecting to local services. Had a VPS for my external stuff and things I wanted to reach away from home and then used a couple of local services when at home.

drudoo ,

Weird that this hasn’t been on the local news. I see Drivr cars all the time.

drudoo ,

You can use the command ‘wakeonlan x’ where x is your MAC address of the pc you are trying to wake.

I use WireGuard on a pi and then use wakeonlan from my phone to start my pc.

drudoo ,

Basically tried them all and I’ve been using Avelon pretty exclusively for the past couple of weeks.

drudoo ,

Saw it (70mm though) and was surprised how great it was, but I saw a lot of people complaining after and during intermission that it wasn’t what they expected.

I’m currently reading American Prometheus, which is the book it’s based on, and it is very much like the movie.

If you don’t understand American politics, which many (where I live) doesn’t, it is very hard to follow and understand.

Looking forward to finishing the book and rewatching it when it’s released digitally.

I definitely understand why it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and not a traditional Nolan film.

drudoo ,

When showing in 70mm there’s an intermission to change film reel. It’s old school when it isn’t digital.

drudoo ,

Use a reverse proxy in front and be sure to have auth setup in Baikal.

I’ve been using it with traefik for 5ish years now without issues.

Best current hardware solution for selfhosting?

I use my desktop PC for Jellyfin and torrenting, but I’m looking for something that I can keep on 24/7 that draws less power and run other self-hosted services on Linux. I would like to have at least 2x 14 TB 3.5" hard drives in or attached to it with the possibility of expanding in the future....

drudoo ,

I’m seriously thinking of getting this. Maybe the Firebat brand though as it has two Ethernet ports and it’s cheaper for me.

Have you had Pi’s? I’m currently using a pi4 4gb and wondering how it compares.

I’m also frustrated with arm as a lot of docker images aren’t working. Recently had issues with Hugo and Jekyll which needs node.js that doesn’t support arm at this version.

Have to tried Immich on it?

drudoo ,

Is Marvin dead? It isn’t available on the AppStore anymore and you can’t buy InApp subscription.

drudoo ,

Yeah I kinda sucks. I switched to MapleRead instead but I don’t think it has login

[Rant] Cloud service is not a reason to have phones with only 128 GB

I am in the process of looking between repairing my phone or switching to a new one. And the no brainer evolution to the OnePlus 7 Pro I have is a Pixel phone. Pixel Phones are definitely not perfect, I know that the battery would fall faster than other phones but hey, that’s ok, google chip in it, possibility to go...

drudoo ,

All it takes is a raspberry pi (or equivalent) and a usb hadddrive. I’ve moved 3 times (once across the Atlantic) with my homelab setup (couple of Pi’s and drives) without issues. It’s literally a days work and that’s all, super easy.

drudoo ,

That’s definitely possible if you use an OS with a GUI (not raspbian-lite, or headless installs).

But I would suggest you get a small router (like gl inet), that can join a network with a login page and broadcast a new network for all your devices. That way you only need to login once and can control your network better.

drudoo ,

Just finished listening to Murder on the Orient Express narrated by Kenneth Branagh. Wish he would do them all, but so far just two are out (Death on the Nile being the second).

drudoo ,

Good luck getting visas and residence permits.

I (Danish) am married to an American and it was easier for me to get a US green card, than for her to get a residence permit in Denmark. After living some time in the US we decided to move to Denmark and while it’s great to live here, it was a freaking painstaking process to get her a permit.

drudoo ,

Denmark: 1gbps up/down with static IPv4 and IPv6 address for 105dkk ($15).

I can reliably get the offered speeds and the connection is unlimited. Pretty happy with that.

Where we lived in Florida we has Spectrum and they didn’t even offer Ethernet. Apartment only had WiFi with router access…

drudoo ,

Was in Kissimmee. We were forced into the apartment complex internet plan and it only included WiFi. No Ethernet ports in the apartment just a WiFi unit where you had to approve MAC addresses for access.

Super frustrating. Ended up buying a router, that would bridge the WiFi and offer Ethernet to my Pi and desktop.

drudoo ,

We didn’t even have a modem, just a locked down AP with no control. All controlled through the apartment complex.

drudoo ,

What I do is using OliveTin behind a reverse proxy (traefik with auth) on a Pi. I then have a button in olivetin that sends WoL commands through local network to turn in my ‘big’ server. You can probably run it without issues on a Pi0.

Alternatively, if you have a VPN to your home network, is using an app on your phone to send WoL commands when connected to the VPN. I have tested with both ‘Magic Packet’ and ‘Net Status’ on iOS through WireGuard.

drudoo ,

Some routers can act as a VPN, but I don’t think an ISP provided one can.

I would suggest you get a raspberry pi zero W or equivalent(like orange pi zero) and setup a WireGuard server on that. It’s only like $15.

That way you can vpn to your network and access devices / services without opening any additional ports.

drudoo ,

How would an i5 6500T compare to a mini pc with an N100 or N305 like the beelink?

I’m serious debating if I should get a beelink (or equivalent) with an N100 and 16GB ram or go for an Optiplex with an i5 6500T and 8GB ram. Both are about the same price where I am located.

Im mainly interested in power usage and performance and not so much in upgradability.

drudoo ,

But compared to a Pi4B the N100 should be a beast no?

drudoo ,

Thanks. I’ll check them out, with taxes they are unfortunately hard to get at $150, more like $225-250. Really want something more powerful than a Pi4

Hawaii has a robust emergency siren warning system. It sat silent during the deadly wildfires (www.cnn.com)

Hawaii has a robust emergency siren warning system. It sat silent during the deadly wildfires::Some Maui residents are questioning the effectiveness of the emergency warning system employed as the wildfires spread rapidly across Lahaina and other parts on Tuesday. Hawaii’s attorney general is leading a review of the emergency...

drudoo ,

Even Denmark has over 1000 sirens for warnings.

drudoo OP , (edited )

I’ve looked at that but idk if 650kr for 8gb ram version is worth it if the CPU is ‘only’ a 6100.

I’ve had a DBA Agent going for some weeks but most things are 6th gen or lower or overpriced 8th gen.

drudoo OP ,

Hmm maybe it’s just me, but I can’t find any N100s for that price.

drudoo OP ,

Thank you. I’ll probably go for a 7th gen then, when I find one in a proper price range!

drudoo OP ,

But then you also spend much more than $100 😂 I already have a NAS with a a 7th gen i7, 16gb ram, 32TB hdh, and a 1070 for decoding but it uses too much power to stay on all the time. I only turn it on to watch plex and then power it down to save electricity.

drudoo OP ,

Yeah I was gonna aim for an i5 with 8-16GB ram. Seems like a 7500 or at least a 7th gen is what I should look for.

drudoo OP ,

I wish that was the case here. I can’t find an 8000 series below $200. Most in the $100 range is 4000-6100 series with 6500 being $120+.

Kinda leaning towards an N100 even though it’s a bit more ($250ish)

drudoo ,

OSMAnd is great. Been using the free version for a long time. Only reason I keep Waze on my phone is to get live traffic, if I know I’ll run in to rush hour / traffic.

Wish an OSM app would get great live traffic.

drudoo ,

Tried a bunch of different searches and most were awful…

drudoo ,

Yes! Absolutely love his books. Currently on The Source (taking a break half way through) but “Space” is on my to-read list. So far I’ve read Hawaii, Caravans, Centennial and The Covenant.

My favorite is Hawaii but I really liked Caravans too. Was a big fan of The Covenant.
