People who order "a decaff coffee with an extra shot" - why?

All our coffee is served with two shots by default. We’re not some fancy coffee shop, just a motorway service station that makes coffee to go. We have some regulars who order a decaff with an extra shot. I explain thats going to have three shots total, and they’re happy with it....

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Follow-up question - each portafilter is two shots right? So if you end up adding an third shot to a coffee, what do you do with the leftover fourth one?

(Or do you have a smaller, single shot portafilter?)

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

That’s interesting to know, thanks! Most coffee shops where I live would probably never get busy enough to use a spare shot. Perhaps they change out to a single shot portafilter, but I’ve never noticed.

What games can you not get into because they feel too outdated?

Are there games that you tried but just couldn’t get into because they feel outdated? Games that, in theory, you would enjoy, but don’t because the controls, graphics, writing, or mechanics just don’t feel good anymore. Games that, compared to today, just don’t hold up to your standards....

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

This is a weird one for me because it often depends on whether I paid for the game. I got the first Fallout game for free (from GOG or something), and when I inevitably became confused by the UI and objective I ended up giving up on it. If I’d bought the game (either today or back when it came out) I definitely would have invested a lot more time into it, and got past that initial hump. Back when PC games came on disc with an instruction guide, reading that was part of the experience. There’s definitely a awkward period around the early 2000s when games were becoming way more complex, but before in-game tutorials were regularly a thing. I find it hard to go back to a lot of those games.

Likewise I played the first hour of Resident Evil HD on my PS4 (free with PS+) and never had the motivation to get into it. After paying for it in a Humble Bundle, I played through the whole thing on Steam and loved it! The fact that I’d paid for it was able to outweigh the fact that the game was quite outdated. I guess I felt like I wanted to get my money’s worth.

Any game from 2005-ish onwards feels ‘modern’ enough that I don’t usually have this problem.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes that’s true! I find that games like that have their own sort of niche, in which players usually know quite a lot about the game (from watching others play it online) before jumping in. And there’s an expectation that they’ll refer to the wiki regularly. These kind of games can’t have a tutorial that covers everything, because there’s way too much to cover.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Wow that’s a lot! Do you have any particular favourites of the ones you read?

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve read Project Hail Mary - that was great fun, and went to interesting places I wasn’t expecting.

11/22/63 is one I’ve been wanting to read. Will definitely do so at some point next year!

What did you think of Neuromancer? I finished that not too long ago.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Glad you enjoyed it! It was a really interesting heist type novel with some great world building. Cool how it basically started its own ‘cyberpunk’ genre.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Out of interest, what do you mean ‘you don’t read too closely’?

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Ah thanks for clarifying. Would you not say that reading it slower would be the more enjoyable method? If you’re after escapism, wouldn’t it be better to engage yourself fully in the plot? At least for me, I find escapism works best when I’m fully immersed in the story’s world and characters. What you’ve described sounds more akin to someone skimming a research paper.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Well I hope you’re able to slow down the pace a bit (assuming that’s what you want)!

13 Sentinels - some thoughts (spoilers)

After several months I’ve eventually finished this game. I’ve played other ‘mixed-genre’ visual novels before (Danganronpa, Persona and Ace Attorney for example) and generally enjoyed them. And yes, I did find 13 Sentinels interesting and fun to play for the most part. I’d definitely recommend trying it....

OmegaMouse OP ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah I agree with all that! Definitely a bit too much school life stuff near the start. The story starts to get properly interesting around the halfway mark, but also branches out so much that it’s hard to follow. I’d love to see a similar game in this setting, with an equal complex story but told in a more standard way.

Also yeah Megumi’s part kinda sucked. Didn’t ever get interesting.

Thanks for the clarification on those bits!

The texture of the balloons made me think I was looking at meat for a moment

So it’s an average of the different isotopes that can be found? That’s interesting, I wonder how they work out that average. Do you have to take samples all over the world?

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I like the sound of this! The Starfield coffee article was funny. $7 a month miiiight be a little bit much for me - but I’ll keep an eye on this and if the journalism is decent and they put out a fair number of articles I’ll definitely consider it. I guess I used to spend around that amount on gaming magazines…

Playing through:

  • New Vegas
  • 13 Sentinels
  • Might start on Skyward Sword on Switch, now that I’ve finished TOTK
OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Have you played any of the series before? MGS2 and 3 are some of the best games ever made, IMO :) Twin Snakes is ok, but I much prefer the original.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I started playing it years ago but quit after reaching the Strip - this time I will make sure to actually finish it! The writing is great and the quests are really memorable.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Oh awesome, most of these were on my wishlist. The backlog grows yay!

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

This is a difficult one to answer as most RPGs I can think of have some combination of the stuff that puts you off. Have you tried the Witcher 3 (great story, and the RPG elements are fairly simplified) or Deus Ex: Human Revolution? And if you’ve played Nier Replicant and enjoyed it, I think you’d love Nier Automata.

OmegaMouse OP ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

That’s a good comparison! The words here are taken from this essay on the human condition.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I agree with what others have said about gamifying life. For example, ‘oh it’s 5pm, I need to spend 30 minutes doing some tidying before I can play a game again’. And for games with no clear end point, set yourself goals so you know when to take a break. ‘Once I’ve built this factory, I need to take an hour’s break before I can play again’.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah I guess that’s my take on ‘gamifying things’, but there’s probably a few different ways to do it. I’ve heard that in psychology, rewards are a lot more effective than punishments - so maybe frame it slightly differently. Personally I wouldn’t base things on how well you do in the game, because that could get frustrating - in the worst scenario you’ll already be annoyed at doing poorly in the game, and that’s followed by having to do more work. Instead I’d spin it, so if you do all the tidying reward yourself with an hour of gaming. If you get all your chores done, you get 2 hours of gaming etc.

How did Celtic culture survive in Wales and Cornwall despite Roman invasion?

I understand that the Romans were unable to conquer Scotland so they build Hadrian’s Wall (which explains the survival of older cultures there). But as far as I know they occupied Wales and Cornwall, so how is it that the Celtic culture (language etc.) survived in those places?

OmegaMouse OP ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

That’s very insightful, thank you! I didn’t realise the Celtic tribes ‘coexisted’ with the Romans in that way

OmegaMouse OP ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks for explaining this. So were there many Roman citizens in Britannia, or was it a pretty small ratio of Romans to locals? Did the Roman soldiers give commands to the local elites, who would then tell the locals what to do? And would you say that life changed much for the locals under the new rule?

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Weirdly enough, I’ve heard the opposite - that the first game is way better than the second 🤔

Damn, I really want a decent way to play 2&3 on Deck. Given the lazy ports, I’m tempted to wait for some updates to fix things and then find alternative methods of obtaining these.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes I’m sure Valve will get Proton working, but regardless of the current Linux compatibility, these are lazy ports by Konami and they don’t justify the price tag.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

They were very good ports for the PS3 and 360. But Konami have just taken that and popped them on the marketplace without much in the way of work to make them suitable for PC players. Sure, it’s great to finally have them available on PC, but if you’re gonna put such little work in, the price they’re asking isn’t justified.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I understand, but I’m not sure I could justify spending even $45 on this. If they’d put a bit more effort into it sure, but this is purely a cash grab.

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I’m not sure that’s the message we really should be sending though. We shouldn’t encourage huge studios to get away with this kinda laziness. I agree that they’re some of the best games ever made, which is why I think Konami should treat the IP with a bit more respect

Some Cheddar and Red Leicester. The Red Leicester from Aldi is surprisingly good! It has more of a tang to it than other variants I’ve tried - like a cross between a mild stilton and the creaminess of double Gloucester.

why cant Steam Deck detect display resolution?

Every PC I’ve ever used automatically detects and adjusts resolution to the display you connect to it. Even Nintendo Switch will detect when it’s docked and automatically adjust the display resolution. But on Steam Deck you literally have to adjust the display resolution for every game, every time you switch displays....

OmegaMouse ,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes this is annoying. I like to play games docked, and in order to get them working correctly I have to manually tell Steam to use 1080p resolution for every game. This then gives you more options within the game settings (rather than maxing out at 1200x800) whilst docked. But in most cases I have to then change the in-game setting each time I go from docked to portable.

It does feel like docking is an afterthought with the Steam Deck. I was expecting something more akin to the Switch which has a flawless docking experience. I hope SteamOS improves on this in future.

Not heard of that one! I can’t seem to find it online - unless is the game called Virtuaverse and Master Boot Record did the music?

Oh I completely misread your earlier comment lol. They sound good though! I’ve heard great things about ULTRAKILL too
